I saw Steffi love dolls in person for the first time recently and was impressed with their quality. It's the quality I remember barbie having in the 2000s. I appreciate Steffi love and dream ella for their efforts to fill Barbie's role even better than modern Barbie itself

Mattel is no longer the company it once was. I think between the greed and societal critique they’ve neutered the brand. I do agree with you that some of the influencers do not speak critically of the lack of Barbie core in the Barbie aesthetic. The dolls in terms of quality are lacking imagination, creativity, style, and cohesion. Like almost all products Barbie dolls have become fast and disposable. It would take a CEO who cares about the brand to bring about a renaissance.

I follow a couple of doll collector channels and I'd see creators/collectors talking about the pixel screening but would never fully understand since I don't really collect and most of the images I see online are prototype photos.... tell me why, I went into a toy store with my friend not too long ago, picked up a Barbie doll and was immediately HORRIFIED. I was so confused and appalled (dramatic I know lol). I'm a 90/00s Barbie girl, so to see THAT on the shelves available to consumers is crazy to me. It sucks because as long as it sells Mattel won't change. I beg people, if you love Barbie as a brand, please speak up and criticize them rightfully. Also vote with your wallet, don't complain but still buy. The power is in your hands honestly.

I definitely feel that 2024 is not going to be a big doll buying year for me all round. With the demise of Barbie Extra, which I know was sometimes quite questionable, but at least it felt that they were trying to make some effort with it - I feel like now we don't really have any specific Barbie doll lines left, unless you count the Fashionistas. I can forgive anything but that pixelated face screening!

And this is why I dont buy new barbies anymore, I only buy the 80s, 90s and 00s Barbies and thats it. There's so much dolls that are less expensive and have good quality. I understand that its "trendy" the diversity in the dolls but they can and should embrace diversity and improve the quality of the dolls, Mattel have lots of money to do that! I bought a month ago my first LOL OMG doll I was sooo surprised by the quality... heck even the Monster Highs are great and they're from Mattel, so what's happening in the Barbie design section?!

I'm saddened to how the brand is being handled. Across the board, I do see that once legacy brands have noticed they have a core audience they start being cheap in what they produce down the line. It's currently happening to G3 Monster High and Rainbow High. I collect Neo-Blythe dolls and I've also noticed that their quality has gone down substantially.

You are right about the play line quality of Barbie today. It’s not good at all. I hate that most of them do not come with at the very least bendable legs. I honestly think Mattel deserves some crit, because otherwise they'll keep serving us hot garbage, because the "positivity" makes them actually get away with it or worse: think that we're ok with this. If I pay a company good bucks for a product you better believe I will be negative if I get a crappy product. There’s also these creators who hype up these new dolls and I just don’t get where they are coming from. Do they not get free dolls sent to them if they say what they don’t like? There is NO quality. it's been a long time I don't buy Fashionistas or Extras. I can't stand pixelated faces. I prefer buying second hand Barbies from the 80'-90's. I'm also tired of spending too much money on a fashionista + a mtm match to have a decent doll (these dolls are expensive here in Brazil). I really love the Barbie Looks line, because it brings a complete doll with nice faces and poseability.

When I saw the other brand of dolls online I thought wow..they are so interesting. I've not felt like that about Barbie in a long time could they not even try something different with Millie give her red hair drastic makeup anything the clothes are horrific on almost every doll we want barbie to be fashionable again give us fashion fever 2.0

Mattel just really doesn't care about quality anymore, and somehow it all plummeted when they released the Millie sculpt. It felt like they wanted to cater more to the very young audience, not anymore to the simply "young" one. Because kids over the age of 7 expect more from a doll than a pixelated face and sculpted bodice, yet they create now for 4-5 year olds it seems. And I see so many abused Millies in thrift stores recently, that sometimes I wonder if it's a problem with the generation or a problem with the dolls. Most cannot be rescued, unlike the barbies of the 90's that after a good wash look brand new again. They just don't listen to their customers, and I really have no idea why. I'm always hoping for a comeback of an older sculpt for the "main" barbie, but I have no idea if that would happen. Imagine all budget barbies with the steffie face or superstar, or my favourite, mackie. A newer one would also be amazing, like Odile or Victoria or anything, really. They also have the teen skipper mold they could use, if they want Barbie to look younger. The options are endless. Yet they seem to make one wrong choice after the other. Don't they read the comments on their posts? Or online, or anywhere??

Haven’t there been some political tensions between China and the US lately? Is it becoming visible now in our barbie dolls? Not only the heavy pixelation, I also noticed some kind of ’distortion’ on barbies legs lately. It’s as if the mold has twisted. On some fashionistas and budget dolls it is almost impossible to ’position’ the legs correctly, very weird. Either way, if it’s not tensions btw 2 countries, it comes down to stockmarkets and shareholder circus, for sure. No wonder they cut budgets constantly only feed the mouths of non entitled, greedy enteties. As a customer, I couldnt care less about all these reasons! Also, i don’t get the ’Barbie loves the ocean’ line, which I love btw, when at the same time they continue to produce tons of cheap, non articulated Millies that ppl dont need any more of and throw away eventually. This is NOT environmental, it’s stupid! I know, Mattel could do much, much better, if they only got their act together. Producing fewer dolls would allow them to serve more quality, in my opinion.

I was lucky enough to find 3 of those gorgeous "Extra" style Defa Lucy dolls online in Australia. So glad you mentioned them. I wish we could get more of these pouty edgy Defa Lucy dolls here because there is little if any competition for Barbie. I did a little digging on the Jieyang Defa Lucy company hoping to find a way to order more of their dolls and found this case Jieyang Defa Industry v EUIPO - Mattel Dec 1st 2021. Of course Mattel is busy trying to shut any competition down. I do think these newer extra style dolls are using a different (& way better) head mold to the one being disputed in the court case.

I'm glad I canceled my order on Barbie Twist and Turn Waist tribute Fashionista; I don't like heavy Pixelated on my Barbie dolls.

I can't believe people are still buying these cheap grap Barbie's with bad hair quality and style and cheap looking outfits, Well i'm a 80's Barbie doll collector myself and some Barbie's from the 80s are not very cheap if you buy them new in the box, but most Barbie's from that era you can buy them for 20 euro's up to more, but at least those older Barbie's had better hair quality, better clothes, and mostly some extra accessories. But i do agree that those other brand "Fashion Girls Dolls" are looking so much better then those Barbie's of these time.

When I was a kid even the skinny box budget Barbie’s looked good like in cute fashions and fashion packs looked current and nice like from 1995 to 2005 Barbie’s and my scene and Mattel really looked cute and had great fashion that was like 20 years ago now I go to hunt for dolls and I skip Barbie all together they don’t even make me want to stop and look .mga knows what’s up I only collect late 90s or 2000s Barbie’s

I was disapointed in the quality of Barbie for years resulting in me buying hardly any dolls and I am a longtime collector. Only some fashionistas withe unique faces and good face paints and usually on sale they don't cost much. The pixelated faces are a definetly a no for me. With Barbie The Movie I was pleasantly surprised about the quality of the movie dolls and I got a lot of them. I was hoping for a Barbie renaissance but seeing the latest releases I don't thinks so sadly :-(

Defa Lucy I have seen on Temu. It’s crazy that you can get clothes with nicer materials in these cheap dolls than Barbie. I look at the fabric on my 80s Barbies and now it’s a lot of thin, papery plastic fabric that is so stiff.

Barbie has yet to release a playline doll that really captured fashion of todays standard - Extra sorta did, but some were badly styled; clothes, face, and hair. I dont understand Mattels decisions with Barbie, like MH gets quality clothing and exciting lines, but Barbie has the same old boring job(s), clothes, and plain jane face.

It's really disappointing in the face screening of recent barbies. There's one in this latest line of fashionistas coming out that I would love to have but I don't want the pixelated and shiny face. Even my 8-year-old is starting to notice the shiny faces.

Mattel has just gone downhill. I am not a Barbie collector but I collect monster high, another brand they make. The quality of the new dolls is just ridiculous. They all have poly hair, cheap clothes and no stands. This issue even goes to collector dolls. A $90 collector doll should not have paper clothes.

I do not think you petty at all! I think the fact that you have the guts to be honest and forthright about the quality that we have been getting as doll collectors it’s just atrocious. I refuse to buy any more Barbie fashionistas and or play line dolls, due to the whole pixelation of their faces. I do I search online for older dolls from the 90s that are used in pretty beat up. Because I know the quality would at least be better on the face, as a collector, I can always make them clothing and reroot them and doing this will make them better than anything that is coming out from the Mattel line.

I’m a teenager and I own two Barbie fashionista dolls one tall and one curvy and used to play with Barbie dolls as a kid and now I just collect dolls for fun, and I was brushing one of my fashionista dolls hair and noticed that she was bald in the front from the hairstyle I put her hair into and also noticed the stitching’s of her hair and they seemed out of place and out of proportion and it was a sad to see her head bald and no amount of full hair if yk what I mean I was always valued Barbie dolls quality and used to love the ones from 2000s when the quality was top notch now they seem like those Barbie’s you could get at dollar tree and I hope Mattel changes it’s ways and adds the missing quality from the Barbie’s now

Let’s hope we get the new Looks dolls in a decent enough condition because they’re the only line that I think they’re doing successfully aside from MH.

The quality and design problems you're talking about are not recent with Mattel. I was a Barbie collector my entire adult life until 1994. Mattel realized in the 90's that adult Barbie collectors existed and would pay way above the playline prices for more sophisticated "collectible" dolls. But NRFB was the hot thing with collectors and so Mattel decided that since we supposedly never took the dolls out of their boxes, they could save a ton of money while still charging premium prices by skimping on details and cutting corners. I paid 4x the price of a regular doll for a Nicole Miller designer Barbie and being a defiant unboxer, I took her out of her box. The entire back of her head was bald, her designer dress closed with Velcro, and her exclusive Barbie-print silk coat had a raw ragged 2-inch gash down the back where the wire passed through to tie her into the box. I was heartbroken and furious by turns. I swore that day Mattel would never get another dollar of my money. Thank goodness for Robert Tonner and Mel Odom, who between them reignited my joy in and passion for beautiful dolls.

I've heard Mattel is cheapening Barbie rn to run MGA into the ground again. This sucks for collectors on both sides as MGA is forced to do the same and when MGA is out of the picture, Mattel gives no shits about giving their designers a decent budget.

I got Barbie Fashionista 217 and she is heavily pixelated. It’s terrible. The ruffle part on the dress only has pink on the front and it is white in the back. I love the face mold but it’s a far cry from Fashionista 182.

I wouldn't buy my kids a pixelated dolls, and most definitely NOT myself. Bad hair and molded clothes if fine for little kids. But NO pixelation. It's unacceptable.

I hope another company steps up to the plate to replace what Barbie was. I unfortunately don't think they'll ever come back with quality and effort. Not all of their products are bad, but they could be way better. At the very least they should have pixel free faces and saean hair ALWAYS. Honestly been put off by barbie in 2023 because of the pixelated face screening issues. Hopefully the pixelation doesn't leak into monster high too, the polypropylene already made its way onto the mh dolls 😢. But maybe because of the really big eyes on them the pixelation will look worse.

Honestly, I am so sad that Barbie has gone down hill so badly. I played with Barbie as a lot in the 2000s. I started doll collecting and looked at Barbie. They were just so boring, so basic and no personality. Like what the hell happened??!!

My problem with fashionistas is that there is nothing fashion about them. I get they put focus on diversity and it is great to have a wide variety of doll types. However, the fashion desings are poorly thought, most of them don't even have interchangable pieces tos mix and match and get creative, it is difficult to find cool fashion packs to play around. I thought barbie extra was a great rebrandring, giving full outfits and desings, even the ones that where less extra would get you accesories and clothing to experiment. So what once was a standard for barbie became something unusual. No wonder Barbie is falling behind, i get at some point Barbie had other competitors that challenged it's vision and pushed them into a different and better direction but to be honest, todays Barbie's enemy it's Barbie itself.

The eyes of the new Barbie dolls are really bad. They look like a sticker . I regret for throwing my barbies when i was 20 and decided to be a minimalist. I don’t know how Mattel will hear us to bring back the quality. Also the design of the new Shelly dolls is horrible. The old ones were very cute ,the clothes were detailed. Now you get plastic molded top on the Shelly which you cannot remove. My daughter will have to live without Barbie dolls because i refuse to spend money for such a quality.

I really thought the success of the movie would turn things around. I really did. Instead we got dolls that don't even look like Margot that are monstrously overpriced in every market except the United States, with poorly made outfits, and no changes whatsoever to the pixelation. I feel like all the money is going to Monster High, which, ok, great, I do love Monster High, but they're burning through constant releases of the same fucking characters which is going to hurt in the long run.
