Great comparisons Luca! I also had the 16-80 F4 and it was a very good lens. The overall quality of the image was very good, with great colours, and excellent image stabilization. I also had the 70-300mm and that was an incredible lens in terms of performance and image quality. I wanted to simplify, and now have a Tamron 18-300 as my sole Zoom lens. I do like it but a number of areas don't perform as well as the Fujifilm, which I expected. Sometimes my results are a bit inconsistent, so I end up taking more shots. A few things I've noticed using this on my X-E3, if I rack my zoom too quickly, I get a short 'blackout' in my EVF/display. I've also noticed that sometimes, the OIS doesn't quite work too well at telephoto, and it seems quickly powering the camera off / on resets the OIS. I've tried running my X-E3 in Performance mode to see if this helps but it did not. Now, despite all of these issues, I will keep it, as the convenience of the range is just too good. I am not looking for perfect quality, and with the right conditions and settings you can get fantastic shots out of the 18-300. It opens up its own world of creativity, despite its shortcomings. The 70-300mm was definitely sharper , and focused faster with more consistent OIS and results. But I rationalized I have a Samyang/Rokinon 135mm F2 which is where I go if I really want stellar telephoto images.

As always Luca, great review/comparison. I bought the XF16-80 and the XF70-300 (based on your reviews) and I couldn’t be happier with the results that I get, almost to the point that my primes are mostly collecting dust as they say (unless I’m doing something very specific). On an unrelated subject, I’m waiting for the “long term” reviews on the X-T5 before I update from the X-T4, I’m seeing too many mixed reports on it, it’s still kind of early, besides, I’m not even sure that I need 40 megapixels to photograph iguanas and alligators. Be well and stay safe.

To me, I have been having misgivings about my 16 to 80 mm. And, I also did see that the 18 to 120 mm is indeed sharper which is something I prize. However, not having an aperture ring is very disturbing even though the lens is supposed to be for video. Also, I think most zoom shots that are done professionally are probably done manually. I would guess. To me, there’s so many variables to try and master to pull that off that, it’s no surprise you’re having the issues you are with the zooms. However, I do agree the darkening is a lens artifact, not a camera or technique… Oh, I almost forgot: I feel that you need to keep the 16 to 80 mm just because of the stabilization factors and that it can be used for general use so I’m not so sure you can just simply get rid of it without day-to-day use consequences…

Hello. Thank you for this video that is one year old right now. Exposure problems are ancient story since the last firmware update, it’s way better now, same thing with the focussing issues. I’m very happy with this 18-120 that is Swiss knife for a lot of situations, at one time I was almost ready to sell it but I take the good decision to keep it finally. 👍

I’ve been weighing the same use case and decision. I’ve used the 16-80mm since 2019 on my backpacking trips. I’ve moved more toward video and now have IBIS with the X-T5. The 18-120mm, even with its flaws, is the better choice for me. That said, I haven’t made this choice with overwhelming enthusiasm… I’ve already sold my 16-80mm, but have yet to spend full price for the 18-120mm because I do not think that it is worth its full price to me. Hopefully I can grab a deal over the coming months.

Thank you for the practical demonstration, which I understand to mean that you are not looking at the pixels in the finished image but at the overall effect of the image, i.e. how pleasing it is to the human eye. There are many negative criticisms about the 18-120 lens in the "Internet People" which I have not experienced in daily practice. In my family, the 10x15cm print format is the accepted format where these negative aspects are no longer noticeable. For video I will only now use the 18-120 lens. We will see what happens. I will keep the 16-80 lens. Once again, I will enjoy your correct presentation in all respects!

Thank you for your comparison. It's good to hear from someone better than me that a lens can be a good decision even when it's not the sharpest. The photos or video you showed would not be more satisfying to view if the lens had been a bit sharper ... and it applies to my own as well. Composition and other factors are far more important (as are some other aspects of the lenses you mentioned in your video).

The 16-80mm is a great lens but, as you say, I have also heard it is not as good for video. (I don't shoot video so I wouldn't know) I was really looking forward to someone doing this comparison as I was considering trading the 16-80 for the new 18-120 which is on the compatibility list for the X-T5 - after your review I am glad I didn't. Thank you for your excellent comparision. Also, I was really surprised with how your 16-80 drops down (lens creep) when you turn the lens upside down. Mine does not do that...even if I try to tease it by turning the ring whilst it is upside down, it still sits there unmoving. I have used this lens a lot and I have used the zoom ring every time, but it is still rock solid. No two lenses are absolutely identical and you could have a rogue copy.

Thanks for your insights, Luca! I recently purchased the X-H2s with the 18-120 for travel and family photography and videography. I haven't been on any trips with it yet, but so far it seems to be a great compromise for all of my needs. It's light (compared to the Canon full-frame lenses I've previously owned), small enough, and I really like that the barrel doesn't extend during zooming. I'm aware of the trade-offs compared to other lenses ("only" f/4 and less sharp than the 16-55), but I think having the longer zoom range will be a huge win. I looked at the 16-80, but I'm glad I selected the 18-120.

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography I should have mentioned, I also bought the new 33 f/1.4 to take along just in case I need a faster lens for lower light situations. @@LucaPetraliaPhotography - I'm starting to think there may be a focusing issue with my 18-120 while taking photos using AF-C and Face Detection. Many of the photos I've taken just don't seem to be properly focused. For example, I took a photo at 77.5mm using f/5.0, 1/160s and ISO 4000. It seemed to show the focus indicator on my subject's eye, but ended up front-focusing by about 10 cm. I know there are many factors involved and I'll be working to tune the focus behavior to see if I can get better results. Luca - Have you noticed any issues like this? Do you have any recommendations for getting the sharpest photos of people using Face Detection with AF-C? Do you think there could be a problem with my copy of this lens? EDIT: I did some additional testing and I found one behavior that I had not noticed before. If I take a photo while actively turning the zoom ring, the lens completely loses focus! My testing involved having my son walk quickly around the room while I followed him using Face Detection with AF-C, AF Mode of Wide/Tracking, Tracking Sensitivity set to 3 and Tracking Speed set to 2. I held down the AF-On button the entire time - I've also disabled AF from the Shutter button. The camera tracked him perfectly, as expected. Every shot I took while NOT changing the Zoom was in focus as I would expect. However, every time I took a shot while zooming the focus was completely lost! I'm not sure if this is the same issue that caused my earlier shots to seem front-focused, but it could be a factor. This is the first Power Zoom lens I've owned - all others were mechanical zooms. Is this the expected behavior of a Power Zoom? I guess this is not a good lens for sports, even with the impressive speed of the X-H2s! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@markjsc
@markjsc Жыл бұрын
@mipmipmipmipmip - Thanks for your reply. I have also identified another potential source of sharpness issues. Being new to mirrorless, I thought it was great that I could use electronic shutter and shoot silently but I didn't realize the impact that could have when shooting moving subjects. I've switched to mechanical shutter and so far it seems to have helped. I *think* my copy of the 18-120mm lens is OK, although I still haven't used it heavily.

Thanks for your videos. I am planning a trip soon & will be limited to what I can take along with my X-T5. There may be opportunity for whale watching too, so a zoom would be great. I was looking at the Tamron 18-300, thinking I could get away with taking one lens, but I may have to go with this 18-120 & maybe think about taking my 100-400 in case whale watching does happen. I guess with the X-T5 I could get away with just a 18-120 & do some cropping too.

Well... 120 may be a bit short even for cropping. With whales is also about luck, depending on how close they can get. Don't dismiss the Fuji 70-300, it's a great lens, way smaller than the 100-400 and yes, in that case you can help with a small crop

The zoom creep on the 16-80, I did not know it had it that much. Any experiences with other units? My old Nikon 18-200 has the same issue, and it did introduce some frustration, feels like a dumb issue that just keeps getting worse because the lens won't keep still. Still, the 16-80 is something I am thinking about getting used(~500€ here), specifically for a travel and generalist purpose, as my second ever XF lens. Your photos give me motivation. The size, the aperture ring and WR are big plusses too, and I wonder if the OIS will work in sync with my X-H1 and its IBIS. Regarding the aperture ring, I would've never thought how much I will love that feature, coming from DSLR Nikon, I feel like a lens is handicapped without it now. Ciao from Serbia, thanks for the videos.

Superb video, comparing the 2 lenses. I have opened the 16-80 with the X-S10 for 3 years - love the combination. I find I very often I could use more reach - hence considering the 18-120. I shoot photos 90% of the time, recoding life & travel. I also have Fuji 33 1.4 & 18 1.4. Which would you recommend as a replacement for the 16-80: Fuji 18-120, Fuji 18-135 or Tamron 18-300. I am concerned about low light 23:44 with 6.3 aperture at the 300 range . Your feedback would very helpful & appreciated.
@LucaPetraliaPhotography
@LucaPetraliaPhotography 8 ай бұрын
The answer to this question meet be very long. I had a terrible experience with the Tamron 18-300. You can watch my review and understand why. I believe it was a bad copy I got but I have no way to confirm it. I wouldn't personally be concerned about the 6.3 aperture because even the 70-300 becomes 5.6 at 300, so there is only a third of stop of difference. That being said, between the 18-120 and the 18-135 I would go with the 18-120, it's more modern, weighs less, it's F4 all the way and it's more hybrid. If it's for photos only however, I would stick with the 16-80, it's a perfect lens for photos

Very informative video - thank you. I think you mentioned that you have used these lenses as well with the X-H2. I was wondering if you used the X-H2 and its Digital Zoom function (this really is just cropping in-camera). Perhaps the Digital Zoom could be a workaround for the flicker issue with the XF16-80 when zooming? If so, this might tempt me to buy the X-H2 and keep the XF16-80. The extra 2mm for wide angle, the smaller size - these make it hard to let go of this lens. I also use Sony camera bodies and lenses. With the arrival of the XF18-120, the hope was this would be the Fuji equivalent of the Sony 18-105. Both zoom internally and both are PZ. While the XF18-120 has longer reach, Sony cameras have Clear Image Zoom which can double the reach of the Sony 18-105 (or any lens for that matter - even primes). Where the Sony shines is autofocus, OSS, and no weird behaviour when zooming. I also have the Sony Zeiss 16-70. If it had weather-sealing and internal zoom, would've been the perfect lens for me. But as you say - "it's a game of trade-offs". Thanks again.

Thanks! I honestly haven't tried the digital zoom function. I tend to use the Xh2 as a photography camera and the X-H2s as a hybrid camera. I guess you can use it as a workaround for limited zoom in and out, although I guess it would not look natural as the perspective doesn't change, nor the depth of field. For what concerns the comparison with Sony I can't honestly say nothing as I don't know those lenses

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography Thanks for the response. Still on the fence about the XF18-120 - I still have a Fuji camera body without IBIS so I'm keeping the XF16-80 for now. I found it funny where you had the XF16-80 pointed downwards and then gravity started to "adjust" the focus. For my copy - it stays put at 16mm but it starts to "drift" if I use a focal length beyond that. Luckily, my 18-55 kit lens does not do that. I tend to use the Sony for travel - more reliable autofocus and smaller form-factor. But I always wish I have the Fuji kit since its more fun to use.

@@ArtifexBarbarus How is the image quality when Digital Zoom is used for stills/video? Down-sampled from 8K, right? How much does it affect perspective/depth of field? I've always been partial to zoom lenses. I started out with point-and-shoot cameras and have always liked the convenience of an all-around lens. Changing lenses while on the move can be cumbersome. Plus, there's also the concern about exposing the camera and lens to the elements. As Luca has shown, the image quality produced from zoom lenses have come to a point where it is comparable to primes. Prime lenses will most always be better but the convenience trade-off especially for video is hard to overlook/overstate.

Unfortunately it does it with all the lenses. The best one for this is the 18-120mm which also doesn't lose focus while zooming
