What is the best portrait lens for the Fujifilm system? Is the 50mm F1.0 the best option or is the new 56mm F1.2 WR ahead in this game? And how about using the old 56mm F1.2 R on a modern 40 megapixel body?
Is there any visible difference? Is there a clear winner? Should you upgrade?
Let's find out in my portrait lenses showdown!

I think the new 56 and the 50 are great lenses, but after owning both I’ve decided to let the 56 go unfortunately. It’s interesting you say that the focus is snappier and more accurate on the 56, but i found the opposite to be true in my testing using the X-H2s. I also found the Bokeh to be noticeably smoother on the 50, though the new 56 is definitely an improvement in that area compared to the old 56. All in all, I just found the 50 images to have a more interesting look and the extra 2/3 stop comes in handy in low light conditions. The weight and size isn’t an issue for me because I come from full frame and I find that it balances great on the X-H2s body.

I can't rule out the fact that the copy I tested wasn't perfect. I was surprised by my tests as well. For the bokeh I emphasized the fact that it is very subjective, so I'm not surprised to read that someone else disagrees with me. To me personally, size and weight are a big deciding factor

Excellent, very detailed video! I would be interested in a more detail comparison with the 50 f2. I have the lens and I like how small, lightweight and sharp is, but I have yet own any of the 56mm primes and I'd be curious to know how the 50 f2 performs in the 40mp sensor against something like the new 56. Minimum focus distance is only 39cm on that little lens and it's supposed to resolve well in 40mp sensor so it'd be good to see how it compares to the faster bigger brother. Cheers!

I know the 50f2 had its perks, quick AF and size, but does it have the look in comparison to the 56s? I think it's a stretch!

That's where the "almost" comes in. No it doesn't have the same look, but it definitely a great lens for the price and the size

Always great to see you Luca, another very well done and most importantly, honest review. I really don’t have any interest in these lenses, for the once in a blue moon that I need one, I have the XF50 f/2 and I get great results for my use case, I believe that in the past I mentioned that I used it for my wife’s passport photo and you should see how clear and sharp the wrinkles on her face came out🤣, of course she didn’t like it so she went to Walmart and paid seven dollars for a photo taken with a 5 megapixel Canon Power-shot camera, now she’s happy. For now I have all the primes and zooms that I want (not need), having said that, I’m getting more interested in landscape photography, I’m getting bored with photographing iguanas, spiders and alligators, so I’m thinking about the XF10-24. On a separate note, I’m still holding off on getting the X-T5, I’ve seen a couple of you-tubers having a terrible experience with the auto focusing accuracy on the X-T5 and the X-H2, if you have the time (and interest) the channels are “Jerred Z” and the other one is “Wes Kriesel Photo”, they claim to be professional photographers. It really makes me have some serious doubts about getting it, I’ll wait for more reviews and maybe (if needed) a firmware update. Be well and stay safe.

You'll love the 10-24, especially the second version. As for the X-T5, I saw at least the Jarred Z review. I honestly don't know what to think. Basically everybody else is more than happy with the AF. It may be a matter of one or two bad samples. I hope I'll get to try one as soon as possible. But I know how the Xh2 behaves, and it's very good... The X-T5 shares the same guts, I expect it to perform the same.

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography Thank you for the prompt reply Luca, I'm definitely getting the XF10-24, but I'll wait a while before I get the X-T5.

Great review much appreciated. I’ll say I’ve had to send two copies of the new 56mm back for obvious quality control problems-deal breaking levels of dust inside and out. I’m trying one more time and if it isn’t as clean as $1,000 should be, I’m giving up and keeping the Viltrox 56mm-damn good portrait lens for like $300. For the few minutes I’ve played with it, the new 56 does indeed seem pretty snappy, and image quality to my eyes is outstanding and sharp even wide open-about as good as it seems to get on the 26mp sensor. It’s also a compact lens (without the lens hood on anyway-it really seems a bit overly long) that I think Fuji compromised to fit a wider range of bodies? I think you should compare this lens to the 50mm f2 if you can-it seems like Fuji doesn’t really have both a beautiful AND fast portrait lens in this focal range-IMO the viltrox 56mm f1.4 is the best lens in many ways, just less optically perfect below around f2. It gets super sharp and is very fast autofocus. I’d love to play with the 50mm f1, but for the size, weight, and cost I frankly think it should be quite a lot better than it seems to be.

Having to send back two copies hurts the trust in the brand. Definitely not exciting at all. I have heard that the sigma is also a great lens... I would love to test it, but I'm not going to buy it having the Fuji legs already. As for the Viltrox, I've heard mixed reviews.

@@LucaPetraliaPhotography I was really trying to move away from 3rd party lenses, nothing wrong with them but an argument can be made for sticking with the (sometimes horribly) expensive first party stuff. Viltrox can show some fringing and chromatic aberrations wide open, but by f2 it looks pretty great. Yes it has low “edge” resolution but for portrait who cares? It’s built of metal and I’ve gotten some great shots with it. I guess I wouldn’t recommend it to pros doing huge prints. To keep ranting I’ve bought several lenses new and used all came in better condition than the new 56 IMO…so now I’m wondering if I should consider avoiding Fuji-maybe they’re getting greedy. Or maybe they haven’t made lenses in Thailand before, and this is a quality control issue that needs to get ironed out. Either way, I expected perfection for the price of this stuff. It’s definitely giving me more time to ponder if I want to put up with the possible AF issues!

Great analysis Luca, and I really appreciate your perspective. I'm on the market for a new portrait lens for my X-H2 and Fuji has at the moment both the 50mm f1.0 and the new56mm f1.2 on sale, so I'm pondering this precise decision. I do quite a bit of night (street) photography as well so I'm inclined towards the 50 for its maximum aperture, although with a1/3 of stop less, 1/2 the weight the new 56 and faster autofocus the new 56 may win the battle in my case. Thanks again for sharing your point of view!
