If your A/C compressor clutch won't engage because the refrigerant is too low, then you can jump the 30 and 87 pins to get the Clutch Engage. Make sure you are prepared to immediately fill the refrigerant, or shut off the engine and prepare after seeing this works to engage the AC clutch. Because you do not want to damage the compressor by turning it on too long without Refrigerant.

@@chrispayseur6913 Go straight to the source. Put power to the clutch itself and see if it engages. That'll tell you at that point there's a wiring issue between the clutch plug and somewhere in between.

@@automotiveperformancemobil4030 Thanks, I was actually able to tap the clutch plate with power running to it and it engaged. Ended up pulling off the clutch plate taking the washer out and replacing it with a washer half the diameter bringing it closer together and it's been working ever since.

Man. Thank you for this. I really appreciate this. Once I saw the compressor and everything worked, I jumped it, filled freon, and restarted. Now, it didn't cut on initially on its own but I simply disconnected the car battery for a minute to reset everything and it worked! With all the intelligence in cars you'd think a simple refrigerant gauge would be made. Nope. Imagine how many people replaced ac systems when all they needed was to attempt this process first.

my clutch would NEVER engage on my 01 JIMMY. I just wasted 300 dollars to replace it and refill it. still never engaged. just saw this video and I'm going to be so mad if it just needed to be jumped in order to start engaging again 😡😑😑😑

Worked like a charm! My was a bit different on the relay. I was working on our 2009 Ford Fusion 2.3L. The relay is model 5L3T-AA. It has four posts marked as 1, 2, 3, 5. So I looked up the relay diagram and saw that I needed to use 3 and 5. Clutch engaged, and we added our R134-a. Took it for a 10 minute drive and was super cold by the time we arrived home. I turned the A/C on and off several times to ensure the clutch would keep engaging. Great video! Thanks!!

Thanks for the info. I was searching for ways to bypass a faulty relay for central air and this popped up which is definitely needed being that my wife’s compressor clutch is not engaging. I’m going to try this and see if it works. Thanks again!

if its just a faulty relay, then switch your AC relay with the Horn relay... they are usually the same relay. to test out if it was actually a faulty relay.

Great Advice... I didn't know what was wrong with AC system. This technique allowed me to get the Clutch engaged. And since I had a can of refrigerant, I bought thinking it just needed a charge, I added the can to system. With one can I felt I might be getting cool air. Ran to auto store for another can... added just a little from 2nd can and YES!!! I have cold air. Thanks so much!!

So I have a 2006 dodge grand caravan, have not had ac in years (my teenagers were driving so I didn't care if it had air lol) But now I'm driving it and it's getting hot out.. All the refrigerant had leaked out due to the notorious rear leak. So I capped the rear lines (very easy). I proceeded to put refrigerant in but the ac clutch did not engage (I thought bad compressor due to not being used in so long. Did a little more research and read it would not engage if refrigerant was empty so I jumped the relay (30 to 87) and the compressor came on! Filled it up with 3 12oz cans and now works great! That's encouraging. I also have a '06 Dodge Grand Caravan. I kept hearing a loud grinding noise that was coming from the engine bay, only at idle. It did it for years and a mechanic told me it was the alternator when he I had it in the shop to have the rack and pinion replaced. The noise kept getting worse and I determined that it was coming from the AC compressor by removing the AC clutch relay fuse because the noise stopped. I replaced the clutch, pulley and coil. The noise went away, but the clutch will not engage. The AC had stopped working sometime since last summer, but I thought it was related to the clutch noise. I tried adding refrigerant, but the clutch won't engage and it shows about 80-100 pounds static pressure on the low side. I also tried replacing the pressure (transducer) switch since it was only $12. Hoping if I can get the clutch to engage I can troubleshoot some more.

@@mikeprice8307 I ended up replacing the compressor, front and rear expansion valves, condenser and accumulater, belt and pullies, but still couldn't get the clutch to engage. Took it to a mechanic who diagnosed a bad transducer (pressure switch) even though it was new. He filled it with refrigerant and it's had ice cold 39° A/C ever since. Unfortunately, the noise returned about six months later, but it still works.😅

I just did this on a 2009 Chevy Traverse the freon was so low that the compressor would not come on did the paperclip trick put two cans of freon and a pressure gauge is just barely in the green on the gauge will get another can or 2 wouldn't have no idea how much money I just saved myself but would probably be $100 or more for sure a big thanks for the video helped me alot

Thank you very much, now I can check to make sure the spacing is correct (my refrigerant must me low so I couldn’t engage the clutch by turning the a/c on). The new clutch engages and disengages as it should when I manually bypass it as you showed.

I don't think A/C relay "knows" if you are low on refrigerant. It simply sends electric current to the A/C clutch. That's all it does. Another component called "the refrigerant pressure switch" can prevent clutch from engaging if you are low on refrigerant. It would have to be bypassed in order to charge the system. That is the real "chicken and the egg" situation....

On a lot of cars the A/C pressure switch is on top of the A/C receiver-drier (vertically mounted cylinder often in front of the A/C condenser/radiator). It'd be safer to pop the switch off & bridge that than the relay (not to mention you can still control the A/C with your dash while the car is running).

@@mikeprice8307 on my 2003 Pontiac vibe I checked my pressure switch and it had continuity. I then checked the connector that goes to my compressor and it is not receiving the necessary 12v. Trying to find out why right now

@@Brandman1297That's another question I have. The actual pressure switch itself on mine is a three-pin connector. If I poke around with a multimeter on continuity should the actual physical pressure switch itself have continuity on some combination of the three male pins inside? I'm not getting any continuity at all on a good tested multimeter on any combination of those three pins in the physical pressure switch with it disconnected from the harness

I just spent the past 7 hours installing my girls new AC compressor on a 2004 Jeep Cherokee. I vacuumed the system and could not get the clutch to engage to accept new freon blew through two cans trying to do it and it over pressurize the system both times oh, I was trying to figure out how to manually put on the clutch on the AC unit and your video helped me 100% thank you so much

I jumped the relay, got the clutch moving and recharged the AC. It worked fine for a day. Now the compressor clutch is not moving again. I jumped the relay to get the clutch moving so I could check the pressure. It is still in the green so it’s holding the charge. The relays are fine. When I jumped the clutch to check the pressure it was blowing warm air even with the clutch moving.

Similar issue lead me here. My Kia's relay was much smaller. Real issue turned out to be the Manifold Gauge Set I borrowed from AutoZone was abused by the previous renters. The hoses were acting like they were clogged because the gasket was blocking flow. Looked like the previous users were tightening more than finger tight. I switched the Gauge Set for another and I was able to complete the job.

This worked perfectly. I was having this exact issue, where I had repaired the compressor off-engine, and so the pressure was completely released and it would not engage until it was full and could not fill without engaging. terrible design imo lol

both fans and the AC clutch engaged but the Paper clip got very hot and was glowing red and turned gray after I pulled it out. I checked and it was the right two pins.

What I'll do is I'll take for example the windshield wiper relay normally they are the same relay I'll take out the relay and put it in the AC relay as long as the numbers match they are the same relay then turn on the AC and see if the AC clutch comes on or not if that relay is working on the windshield wipers for example then it will work on the AC clutch so I just take one that's exactly the same number see where it goes and I will swap out the relays and see if the relay is good

So for me, my thermostat only reads temperature some of the time. Currently waiting for a couple day block to replace the thermostat myself. I do also believe some of the wiring is bad. When my temp does not read in my 09 cobalt, the ac does not work. When it does read temp, the ac works.

I did this to get the ac clutch engaged, but when I checked the freon it was at the minimum green level which should be enough, but is still blowing hot (just outside air in not heat), not sure what else to do

It’s not because the relay is bad- the PCM only provides ground to allow the relay to close, thereby completing the circuit and engaging the clutch on the compressor. Because the pressure is So LOW, the conditions required by the PCM aren’t satisfied, and so it will not allow the functions required to add r134- that’s the “chicken/egg” reference at the beginning of the vid…the relay is Typically just fine…so now YOU know as well.

Anything else to check for if ac fails after battery replace? Btw. I can connect 12v to the compressor clutch side of relay to force voltge there if need be, right?

Will the refrigerant go in without the compressor on AND when it gets to the right pressure will the compressor start......what if the system is depleted of all refrigerant and you are just putting on a new compressor? Will running the compressor without any refrigerant ruin it?

So I've got a question on that. You jump the relay like that with the vehicle off correct and then as soon as you turn it on it should make it engage but you will not hear any kind of click as soon as you insert that paper clip with the vehicle off correct?

could be neither, if the refrigerant is low enough the compressor will not engage. this method will allow you to check refrigerant levels and add more if needed

Youve probably figured this out long ago but once you jump the clutch you need to check your refrigerant level, if its low add the right amount. Once you have the right amount of refrigerant, plug the relay back in. If it still wont come on, use the paperclip again and see if it blows cold. If it does replace relay or try another similar relay in your car that you know works

Did this after a recharge didn’t work and my AC worked for 60 seconds before all the Freon exploded out! Blown compressor for sure ($$$) but at least now I know what the problem is

Put the paperclip first. Turn on the car and set the AC to max. Then refill the refrigerant, then remove the paperclip and put the relay back on.

After my car sat for a while and i finally got it to a mechanic to fix the alternator i got it back with nothing but hot air blowing. My ac used to be AMAZING. Hubs says the ac compressor clutch thingy isnt doing its thing. He got the can to refill it b4 he knew this and the damn pressure was TOO HIGH. csn he just let it all out and redo it or should i get a new fuse. I need a new car

I did what u said and it worked but once i take the jumper off and put a new relay in the clutch won’t engage on its own what could be the problem. Refrigerant levels are good just clutch won’t engage

One or both of the 2 pressure sensors (high side and low side) could either be defective or have a bad connection. First thing to try is the wiggle test - with the engine running and a/c compressor switch turned on on the dash, temp set for very cool air, relay in place, fuse verified as being good(replace if any question, extras are usually in the fuse box somewhere), carefully figure out a way to gently wiggle the wires going to those switches, one switch at a time, and then the whole A/C harness, without endangering your hand by getting it near moving and/or hot parts of the engine, and see if at any point the compressor comes on. If so, fix the wiring problem.

check refrigerant levels when compressor is jumped. could be low refrigerant. The compressor clutch wont run even if the relay is good if there is not enough refrigerant

Yes, when you get a reading in the green you can shut the car off replace the relay and see if it works as normal. The clutch wont run if the engine is not running.

Hello there, I have a ford explorer car from 2010, when I turn on the A/C the clutch is not working, when I remove the relay as what you said the clutch works just fine. I checked up on the lines and nothing was in a problematic order.However, I got to discover that the negative line that turns on the relay is the one that gets lossed when the A/C is turned on while the relay is on its place and when I connect a negative line directly to the battery to the relay it can work just fine so I connected it directly but the clutch works always.i would keep that for granted if I got a reply on my question. This works because it is the pcm or ecm (your car’s computer) that would normally provide ground to the relay, completing the circuit. The computer will only do this after verifying certain conditions are met by reading voltages provided by the various sensors. If satisfied, ground is provided electronically, the relay closes, and …you know the rest. This procedure should be done ONLY to get your system to accept the r134, and IMMEDIATELY restored to its original configuration, with the relay in place. If the relay is bad, swap with another like the horn relay until you get another one. Typically there are many of the same relays used in a vehicle. Just be sure to get things back to the intended order before something is destroyed- being that your post is a month old, I hope it’s not too late…

Hi sr So what happens if the clutch doesn't engaged when doing this? I have a new compressor and it's its filled with ac. Fuse it's good too. Relay it's good. When I try jumping the relay 30 and 87. The clutch doesn't move, I try jumping the low pressure switch and clutch doesn't engage. 03 jeep liberty 3.7. Thank you much for your video ☺

When the compressor is on you need to check the refrigerant level. Extremely low levels of refrigerant will cause the clutch to not turn on.

Hi, a few weeks ago I was changing my alternator and because the AC Hose was in the way of a bolt I open it and leaked out my refrigerant. I bought some refill and tried topping it up but the compressor won’t turn on even when I tried jumping it. Can you help? I have a Honda Accord 05.

I have warm air blowing thru vents. My AC clutch on accord 2009 won’t engage. I replaced relay with the horn relay and still not engaging AC clutch. I also replaced the fuse with spare fuse provided with cover. Still AC clutch not engaging...compressor not spinning with AC turned on. So will this jumper work or maybe I need to buy a new relay switch? Or do I just have a more serious problem .
