Excellent video and information. Atip on after run oil; you can use Marvel mystery oil as an after run oil. I use it all of the time and had no problems with it and will save a load of money. Also, don't forget to run the engine dry of all fuel after you drain the fuel out of the tank at the end of the flight. Methonal attracts moisture and can rust out an engine if left inside the engine. Hope this helps out too. Happy flying.

I generally find fuel lines and gas tank stoppers are the number one issue with fuel related issues. I buy and replace my tank plug every few years, those things do develope issues. This was a great video. I need to get manuals for the engines I got on E-Bay. Thankyou for the video.

Thank you and welcome to nitro, i have several electrics as well but i love my nitro and gasser planes to, it a lot of fun, they are easy to tune and love the sound, the nitro fuel is a little oily and messy but just keep you a spray bottle of windex or i like denatured alcahol the best and a roll of paper towls and it's easy to clean up, i just got home from flying all day myself LOL. ***** Have you ever built an onboard generator to run off the engine to run your electrical components rather than having a battery. or a way to recharge the batteries as your flying with the power of the Engine? Its something I am looking at doing. In your opinion would this be feasible?

FYI mounting inverted sucks when it comes to starting a 2 cycle glow they don't get enough fuel so turning them upside down in most cases is a must 4 cycle no problem. On a profile I like to use 2 aluminum plates 1 under the mounting lugs of the engine I have right side thrust in all of mine so it is wedge shaped and 1 on the nut side it helps to keep from crushing the wood.

Never had a "fueling valve" on any inverted engine, & never had one flood yet. Make sure throttle is fully shut & fuel will flow to the tank ok. Also, make sure the pressure pipe is clear. This will allow air to flow out of the tank rather than push the fuel out to the carb. Fill the tank nice & steady, again, this will allow the air to escape rather than build up pressure & flood the carb. I have found a four stroke plug works better in inverted engines. The element is kept clear of the head & doesn't get bogged by the fuel.

+Russ Hazard wow that is strange, have the stick all the way down and the trim to the bottom and my two stroke's will fluid every time, I guess I must be doing something else wrong. thanks for the tip thugh
@russhazard5566

When an engine is inverted, you often have to lower the fuel tank to keep the center line of the tank in line with the carb. If it's too high then you may be getting fuel syphoning out of the tank.
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 8 жыл бұрын
Ok never thought of that, thanks for the tip, i will look it over and see, i only have one two stroke nitro now that's inverted, i have a couple of four stroke nitro inverted but don't have any problem with those just the two strokes, thanks again for your help. Take care my friend, Terry

I have a plane which i mounted the O.S. nitro engine upside down and the engine wouldn't start. it just kept flooding. So you mentioned using a filter or some kind of valve to prevent the flooding. My question is what kind of filter can i use to prevent the flooding of the engine mounted upside-down? Any particular type or brand, and if you can send me a link of where i can buy it online? Thank you.
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 7 жыл бұрын
Hello, it's a fuel fill valve that you need, i put the link to the one i use on my inverted nitro engines. Also after filling the tank leave your throttle trim on your radio all the way down so the the throttle barrel is closed untill you ate ready to start the engine, sometimes if your trim is set to "run" position the fuel will leak into the engine while setting there, the fuel valve forms a plug to the carb line while the fuel probe is pluged in while filling but when you pull the prob out after filling the the carb line is open so thats why you want to leave your trim in closed position to keep fuel from seeping into the carb until you are ready to start the engine. Hioe this helps my friend, Terry www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD745&P=ML

Terry, you have alot of knowledge on the big stik 40 planes... I have one on the way and an OS 46 axII about a day behind the plane. What prop would you recommend for this setup?
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks my friend, i would run an 11x6 on the 46 or you can run a12x5 but you won't have as much ground clearance and the 11x6 will fly it very well. I had an OS 55 AX on mine in the beginning with a 12x5 and every pass on the radar gun we got 88-89 mph, the 46 AX with the 11x6 prop will do just about the same, maybe just a couple of mph less. Hope your build goes good, you can't beat a stick for some great flying bud, keep me posted, take care, Terry

I have yet to buy my first nitro helicopter, but I've been practicing auto rotation in the simulator, so that when I do buy one and when the engine does die (and it likely will at some point), hopefully I won't be completely screwed. As a side thought, do you recommend a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke for a 50 or 60 size helicopter for someone who doesn't do any major 3D
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 9 жыл бұрын
Nitro heli's are a blast but yes at some point you will have one flame out on you, i am sure glad i had practiced auto rotations on the sim, i flew a Raptor 50 for 3-1/2 years and never had a flame out but then i bought two T Rex 700 nitro and within a month i had one blow a glow plug at about 150 ft high, bout had a heart attack but i auto'ed it down perfect then my 2nd 700 had a fuel pump go out and i was able to get it down safe as well so keep practicing LOL. I'm just getting into glow. You use the "High Speed Needle" to Tune the 4-Stroke. Do you really need to fiddle with the "Low Speed Needle" on these engines or just keep them at the factory setting ?? Are the Evolution Engines easier to start ?
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, generally the factory setting on the low end runs great, i've only had one or two that i had to ajust very little, the four stroke engines are slightly more sensitive than a two stroke but the four stroke is my favorite nitro engine.
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 8 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah on Evoloution, i have only had two Evo two stroke engines but both started and ran well, i just prefer OS engines, i have OS nitro two stroke, four stroke and several gas, love them, out of probably 75-80 OS engines that i've owned i've only had one that ever gave me any trouble. Hope this helps, take care, Terry

When going from 2-1/2 clicks to rich, then clicking up to lean till the engine smooths out and continue clicking until the engine is too lean, then backing off to rich, then just two clicks to lean again. All this is done at Full Throttle ? Seems like a long time at Full Throttle ? Should I be concerned with the Low and High End RPM values during this procedure?
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 8 жыл бұрын
No need to worry about rpm while setting this, the rpm range on low end is just a suggestion, i don't worry about low end rpm, i like to set mine to the idle i prefer and you do that with your trim and sub trim not the low end neddle, hope this helps
@franknapolitano9144

I've been planning to buy the Magnum XL 52 RFS Blue Four Stroke. I read through the tuning and break in procedure on a PDF file and although your tuning suggestion is different from what the Magnum instructions indicate, it seems to me that your instructions in doing this is much easier and simple from the Magnum Instructions. ** Before going through the procedure that you suggested, by tuning the High Speed needle to the Mid Way Point ( between Rich and Lean = just on the Rich Side ), should I just allow the new engine to run at the 2-1/2 turns to Rich for 5 minutes at idle, then shut down and allow the engine cool off first, before going full throttle to tune ? I ask because the engine would be new out of the box.

Hi there great video! I'm hoping you can help me, I've bought a second hand os max 55 ax but i can't get it to run properly I think someone has messed around with the low end tickover screw. Have you any idea how turns it should be? Many thanks Chance.
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Chance, i'm really sorry for getting back to you so late, i've had a really hard week, lost my best little buddy in the world last Sunday night, my litte long hair Dachshund Gopher. Anyway the low end neddle should be turned out until it is flush with the crack case, this is approxamently the factory setting, when the low end is set right you should be able to let it idle for about a min then be able to throttle it up quickly without it bogging or dieing, if it's to rich it will die or bog down and hesitate before finally picking up rpm. Also if there is any ait leak at all the engine will act the same way, it will die when trying to go from low speed to full throttle, even a front barring seal can leak air and cause this, check all your fuel lines and tank stopper and make sure no air is getting in, look at the front of the engine as it is running and see if there is any fuel drip coming out around the barring. Hope this helps my friend and again so sorry for getting back to you so late, take care, Terry

Then you are getting moisture in your fuel, you have to store your nitro in a cool room out of sunlight, you cannot set it on concrete like a garage floor or even out on the ground for any length of time or it will draw moisture into your jung of fuel, i have been flying nitro for over 8 years now and i have never had one rust and i have never used a drop of after run oil, i i see people running there carb dry after flying, if you do this then it will rust but if you leave what little fuel is in the carb and engine then the alcohol evaperates and leaves the oil content in the engine, never had one rust in 8 years. Take care my friend

I would say set both high and low back to factory settings and start from there, it doesn't take much tuning to get it out of wack so far it won't run, there are many other factors to look at as well, could be an air leak in a fuel line, fuel tank, front baring seal could be bad and leaking air, it would be hard for me to say without seeing the engine but start by setting it back to factory settings and see what happens. Take care my friend

Yes you sure can, i have a couple of those as well, the only difference on the LA and the FX/AX engines in the LA models are bushings and the others have bearings, you can rebuild the ones with bartings but the LA models when they wear out they are done but i have a couple of the LA models and they have many many hours of flight time on them and are still going strong, they are great little engines. You put motorcycle two stroke oil in your engine? LOL
@Luvtoflyhelis
@Luvtoflyhelis 9 жыл бұрын
You need to use a high quality nitro fuel like 15% Cool Power or Wildcat, you should never put motorcycle oil in it, my advise is flush it out really good, put a new glow plug in it and get some good nitro fuel and try that, start your high speed neddle at 2-1/4 turns out from closed, this will be running rich at this setting and then work it in clockwise a little at a time untill you get the right mixture, if it still won't run or dies then you have some other problem like an air leak around the front barring or maybe in the carburater, there is also a low speed needle you need to check as well, generaly this should be set so the screw head is flush with the engine casing to start with. Hope this helps, take care my friend
