There is also pink and purple coolants which I use in my German car. It seems they always want to complicate things.

oh, no, are you joking me. We are doomed as a species. Different coolants? & for what? Is "cold" colder in Germany than it is in other places? Is "hot" hotter? I've had several German cars, and I wouldn't be caught dead putting purple fluids into my German car, and pink? Don't get me started, but I can authoritatively state that I am not, nor have I ever been, a girl. Can pink or purple coolant be made on the fly, say, with twizzlers and lemonade just in case the real deal isn't available?

I bought a 2007 last summer and it had green coolant as well as a ruptured radiator. I replaced the water pump and the thermostat had some crazy jelly build up, it was so crazy looking! I did the hoses, radiator, water pump, and reservoir so she is running great now! thank you for your videos!

I'm retired from 47 years in the car repair business. The Dexcool is a great coolant but has one bad flaw. If you let the recovery bottle get empty due to a leak and don't catch it, within in a matter of months the Dexcool will react to the air in the system and turn into a thick red mud that will stop up your radiator and heater core and that is almost impossible to flush out. With a Dexcool engine it is imperative that you keep a close eye on the recovery bottle and keep it full. Green coolant does not do this.

For awhile, I have been wondering about coolant , ever since I learned about " lifetime coolant" and wondered if it offered the advantages of a new formulation , or if it was even compatible with my car. I guess I was overthinking it.

Lyle, in my opinion, the best coolant for any car regardless of year is Evans Waterless Coolant, manufactured by Taylor. At $45 a gallon, it's not for the faint of heart, but here are a few reasons why everyone else should invest in it. One, it raises the boiling point quite a bit, but will not boil over. Two, it's non-conductive, meaning hydrolysis will not occur (no rust anywhere in your system). Three, it can be drained and reused, even in another car. Four, no worry about radiators and heater cores needing to be replaced due to rust or leaks. And Five, it's virtually a lifetime fill. I have used it in all my C2-C4 Corvettes with great success. Because it won't boil over, my engine compartment never looks nasty with rusty red radiator spray. I learned about this stuff on a Jay Leno's Garage TV show, and then followed up with my own research, with very positive results. I am not affiliated with Taylor or Evans in any way. I am simply a satisfied customer who wants to share his experience with the product to other followers of your C&S videos.

That doesn't sound like coolant, it sounds a trick of Satan's. Or E.T. Use coolant after removal? Right, and I'm emperor of the earth. Rust isn't a product of hydrolysis. Rust is oxidation due to contact with oxygen or chemicals that have easily donated oxygen atoms. Iron rusts orange, copper rusts greenish, aluminum rusts white, and gold rusts, NO. Gold doesn't rust. Hydrolysis is the transfer of material from different metals via a conductive medium. Virtually all (maybe all. I'm a driver, not a chemist.) metals have this capacity to donate parts of themselves to other metals through a conductive medium. This donation of material generally appears as crystals, typically grayish or white, on one of the metals. Thanks for the tip on the goo. Is this the same "Taylor" of spark plug wire fame? They've always been good to me.

Thanks for the backstory and clarification. I knew to use Orange in my C6 because that's what the user manual told me I needed to do. Plus, the stuff in the cooling system was orange when I bought the car and I'm not one for breaking tradition. Also, thank you for the English lesson. You used a word that sounded strange to me "componentry." I'm not crazy in my assessment the word is so strange that my spell-checker flagged the word as incorrectly spelled, so it is not a widely used, or known, word. I had always thought "components" were one what referred to when discussing multiple parts of something, but seemingly, my understanding is a misunderstanding. Dictionaries are not entirely clear, but as near as I can tell, the word componentry is used when there are multiple different component that are used in a larger machine. "Components" is used when there are more than one of the same component. So, componentry is correct as you used it, describing an engine's parts, and components is used when you've got a bag full of a many of a single type of component. This should, of course, have been intuitively obvious to even the most casual speaker of English. I can only fault my own stupidity and the horrendous teaching skills of my school teachers for my linguistic near mistake. On a related note, I always refer to a car's engine as an "engine," and not a "motor." Motors are electric. Engines use combustible chemicals and then ignites them. Duh. Also completely obvious to even the youngest of elementary school dropouts. Man, the Motorhead band must sure be embarrassed. I don't think those guys are even allowed to drive a car, likely contributing to their misunderstanding of words and subsequent destruction of intelligence and lowering of IQ point scores across all English-speaking countries worldwide. Cheers, and keep the rubber side down.

Hi Lyle, what about coolant for modern cars? can i use the same coolant as my VW in my Corvette? is it coolant for aluminum engines, or is there any difference between Dex-Cool and other coolants for aluminum engines? Dex-Cool is hard to find in Sweden, and twice as expensive.

Do you ever recommend cleaning the cooling system with a chemical cleaner instead of just draining and flushing with water? If so, what cleaner do you recommend?
@csvette
@csvette 4 ай бұрын
John, water is always the safest solution (and the cheapest). If I found the system to be full of sludge, I would be more inclined to replace major components than to try any chemical solution...I would worry about unintended consequences on the engine internals from anything more caustic than pure water. Lyle :)

What brand of Dex cool is good?
@kevinbarry71
@kevinbarry71 4 ай бұрын
Dex cool was a disaster for general motors. They couldn't make it correctly. Honda stopped selling engines to general motors because GM insisted on using that garbage. Your first state that the job of coolant is to regulate temperatures. Then you contradict yourself and explain its other job, which is to prevent corrosion.
