I have a recommendation. I am a geologist and believe that the sand you used to score the cylinder wall in the engine was much to coarse grained (large in diameter) to simulate sediment being carried by the wind, which is what would potentially be sucked into the intake of an engine. The ability of a fluid to carry a particle decreases with particle diameter. You should repeat this experiment, but use a mixture silt and fine sand. Also, the rislone may work if the scores in the cylinder wall aren't so deep. In my opinion, this test is too dramatic to simulate normal engine wear.

I'm not a geologist but i came here to say that, should have used a high quality extremely fine sand. I have never used Rislone, but this was not a fair test. cant expect anything to fill in scratches that big. Additionally I would have like to have seen several hours of use before testing the after compression.

This might be a fun test: After damaging cylinder walls by running sand through the intake, pull the engine apart and coat the bore with JB weld to fill in all the low spots. Then hone, and re assemble the engine. See if the JB weld does enough to raise compression, and then how long it will run

I've used Engine Restore in many engines over the years. Best example would be my tired and abused 7.3 IDI diesel ambulance with about a million hours on the engine. I haven't compression tested it, but the fact that the blowby used to be bad enough that it would shoot the oil cap a couple feet when I loosened it while running, and now it just barely bounces around on the fill neck is proof enough for me that it works. It gets this treatment with every oil change, and it sure does climb the Mt. Hood pass these days a lot easier than it did when I bought it. I'm a mobile mechanic and it's consistently loaded down to around 11-12k pounds with tools during these trips as well. The lube techs always laugh at me and tell me its just snake oil, or Avatar Blood, as they like to call it... It's impressed me enough that I've never considered switching to different product.

To be fair to Rislone, you really did torture that engine. That wasn't exactly fine grit as far as I could see, and the engine may have behaved itself better if it had had less of a sudden, catastrophic involuntary rebore. It could be that the rings were totalled so that even a honing could not restore compression. That said, I love your work and look forward to your films.

Can you run an engine on just octane booster?
@ProjectFarm
@ProjectFarm 7 жыл бұрын
Tate, this is an excellent recommendation--thank you!
@MrZorbatron
@MrZorbatron 7 жыл бұрын
Most likely won't work. Octane booster isn't a true octane boost, but just a boost to effective octane performance. It is made out of chemicals that decrease the ignitability of fuel. Most off the shelf octane boosters use Toluene to accomplish this, though some older ones used MMT, and "lead replacement" often uses ferrocene.. You will have better luck running an engine on fuel injector cleaner.

I think the sand just dug too much for Rislone, but comparing the two pictures, it seems the places where there isn't a very deep groove are much more smooth, you should try this product again on a moderately damage cylinder head, maybe just an old engine that runs well, and see if a simple application can smooth out those cylinder walls and restore performance to an almost-new state.

Yes, did it on a small motorcycle, and it ran. It was out of gas, I was pushing it, and got to a pharmacy. Decided to buy a liter of alcohol out the shelf, and pour it in the tank. It got me home. It was hardly my idea tough. Back in the '80s my uncle did the same with a 1980 Galaxie Landau. The car had a factory alcohol fuel 302 and he got stranded with no alcohol in the tank. Me and my cousin went on feet looking for a pharmacy, or super market, and we bought 10 liters of alcohol at a small market. The Landau ran perfect and got to a gas station to be filled up with car alcohol. The car alcohol is water free, while the rubbing alcohol has water in it, but the car didn't seem to mind. The motorcycle wasn't alcohol fueled, but had a high enough compression ratio to burn the alcohol alright.

ATF is actually a very high detergent oil and will effectively clean things up quite nicely. I wouldn't replace more than a quart with it, though. I've used it in engines and in diesel fuel systems. It's a great oil to use for a lubricity additive in an older diesel engine that doesn't like the ultra low sulfur fuel today.

Hi! I'm from Ecuador and I'm studying automotive engineering. One of my teachers told me that the best product to restore an engine and make it recover compression is brake fluid, adding it into the combustion chamber. His argument was the brake fluid creates a thin layer that seals the compression leaks. It'd be great if you could discover whether it's true or not.

I love the videos you post but I think you got a little carried away with the sand in this one. The product may have worked better if the scratches weren't so large. The typical wear on the walls and rings that these products attempt to repair aren't quite as drastic. This was evident by the condition of the oil afterwords. Maybe revisit the video again with a smaller size particle of sand. More like powdery dirt, something that would be more realistic of years of neglect or lack of air filter on the engine. Just my $0.02... Keep up the great videos... I keep throwing the thumbs up on them all

I love e85. I've had my mower running on it for over 5 years. I did enlarge the jets to make it run normal though, otherwise it's quite lean and loses power, but is still safe to run like that... Did that for a while too.

Here in Brasil we have alcohol fuel cars since about 1979. The alcohol fuel is made from sugar cane, and has no water in it. My uncle had a 1980 Ford Galaxie Landau alcohol fueled from the factory. The car ran on 100% pure alcohol. The differences from the alcohol fuel car to the gasoline car were on the gas tank, treated to withstand rust, the same on the carburetor, that had a chrome like treatment, the intake manifold was aluminum instead of iron, and a hot water chamber inside to avoid condensation while the engine was still cold. The compression was kicked up to 11,5:1, and the V8 used special head gaskets, with stainless steel rings around the pistons, so it wouldn't be corroded by the alcohol. The car also had a cold start system, that consisted of a little gasoline tank, a pump, and two little injectors in the carburetor. Depending on outside temperature, it would squirt gasoline in the carburetor, to make the engine to start easier. You could also manually squirt gas, by pressing a little button on the dash. Like alcohol has less calorific power than gasoline, more alcohol has to be burnt to get the same result, so the carburetor calibration was totally different.

it would hydrolock tighter than if you put water in it if you put in enough otherwise a little would just burn right through if added slowly...personally i wouldn't do it for the fact that some gallium compounds are dangerous and i am not about to find out if some can be produced inside a ICE

I appreciate your videos. However, being a trained mechanic, I think you went a little overboard with this one. I would’ve used fine dust instead of sand which would do a lot less (more realistic) damage. I had an engine that had a lot of blow by and would fowl the plugs and that product really helped. Keep up the good videos though.

You should do a video on what happens if you run soapy water instead of motor oil. I personally don't know what the results are going to be, but I would be interested to see them. Also my neighbor does it, he says he don't have to spend money on oil when he could just put soapy water in his car. Also he is a drunker.
