Engine out at 200 feet in Quicksilver Sprint

Engine out flight demonstration. Making the 180° turn back to the runway (considered the impossible turn) is risky enough, making a 360° turn at 200 feet above the ground and landing in the spot directly below your engine out location is even more difficult. In this video we conduct an actual engine off dead stick real life simulation of the scenario. In a high drag low mass aircraft such as the Quicksilver Sprint we extract every bit of performance out of the aircraft in order to be able to perform this maneuver. Trying to conduct this maneuver is extremely dangerous and should not be attempted by the average pilot. This simulation was conducted by Brian Carpenter for educational purposes and the video was developed to use during one of Rainbow Aviation's advanced flight training classes.

l have soloed hundreds of QuickSilver students and every one had to make three perfect dead stick landings before the soloed .

I did not know that if it's not procedure it should be to teach someone how to Dead stick landings I'm in the process of trying to decide to paramotor or ultra-light do you have any suggestions on both

I live in Portsmouth Ohio I am going to get into the sport ultralight or paramotor I would love your feedback on what I should do my father was a Cessna pilot but I have so much to learn and I'm studying now I now have all of his flight plans and Manuel's any information would be appreciated

Keep air speed up=life,fly it fast to the deck then you know what to do..the faster you fly the more responsive the controls and less risk of stall/spin :) Nice one!!!

When i was a student sport pilot, i always got "engine out, what do you do?". Always startled me. So....on our last training session, i turned the tables on him. Think he peed himself. If he wasn't strapped in he probably would have jumped out of a perfectly good airplane..😆

Overhead 360 and cut the power maneuver. Emergency Low Maneuvering good practice. For Precision Pilots only

Per the notes at the end, how could this induce a stall spin if you are nose down and gathering speed into the 360? Or did they just mean that doing the engine off maneuver itself could result in a stall spin?
@RainbowAviation
@RainbowAviation 7 жыл бұрын
Of course. The latter. What makes the maneuver impressive, is the nose down attitude is nearly at the minimum. Even pulling back slightly more during the final turn and simultaneous flare could end in disaster.

Good to know because from the camera angle it's hard to tell. It looks to me like aoa is low enough to do pretty much anything, including a steep turn, like in the video.

Very impressive. I can see it doesn't take much runway at all to land a quicksilver ultralight. I'm use to flying heavier aircraft (cessnas and pipers).

While this is a neat video, it's worth noting that the "impossible turn" has killed a lot of good pilots flying certified aircraft. Pulling this maneuver in a Quicksilver Sprint is a lot different than trying to pull a turn back from 200' while driving a Bonanza, or a Cessna, or most any certified aircraft. That's even more true when you consider the real life reaction time to an engine failure (unlike one that you simulate and react to immediately). In other words, fun video, and don't ever try that at home, kids!

@@istra70 except for every certified glider...when the instructor pulls the tow release on the unsuspecting student, it's just like an engine failure, Kerchack! Practice makes...good enough. Have had it done to me at anything between 200' and 1000' a couple dozen times. It's all about altitude lost per 180 degreeish turn, which depends on speed^2 / (L/D). In the case of the ultralight the slow speed more than makes up for the poor L/D. I tend to shove the nose over hard and fly this maneuver at about 70mph in a 30:1 glider.

WTF are you talking about??,UL are much more sensitive to rowdy air and get tossed all over the place down low(lift/sink),unlike a solid fixed wing,it takes a very competent pilot to dead stick any air craft depending on the conditions.

Should also explain why ultralights don't fly well without power... They are not aerodynamic, barely meant to fly, they must glide nose down to keep enough speed. You lose power, get that nose down and keep the airspeed up.... hope like hell you are high enough
