This video is about the thought process when taking off or landing. How to be a safer pilot. Engine failure or power loss can and will happen at any time. Be planning your emergency options while in the pattern.
When looking for an ultralight you can't beat a Quicksilver MX Sport. They are still being produced. Here is the link. www.quicksilveraircraft.com/. A new one can cost you $15,000 and up. Put on the extras and its going to be a lot more. Or in an alternative buy used for about $5-6,000. If you don't have experience see if you can locate a ultralight flying club in your area.
The Contour Video camera with built-in GPS data Logger GPS Camera is out of business. You could find one used on Ebay
Dashware software dashware.net.
Find a used ultralight: www.barnstormers.com/
Radio is Portable KX99. They don't make this radio any more. Buy one used on Ebay $100-$150 dollars.You can upgrade battery to a NIMH for this radio. I use a Acousticom Helmet that you can add your own headset. I have a David Clark headset on this aircraft.
Here is there link: store.acousticom.com/helmets/u...
When you plan to build and fly here is the link. Air-Tech is where you need to go. air-techinc.com.

See ultralights fly and talk to those who fly them. USUA operates a network of clubs, and can put you in touch with the ones nearest you. Whether you have started flying or not, joining a Club is a great way to enhance your ultralight experience. Club members can be your mentors. They have a wealth of first-hand information. Educational seminars, weekend flights, cross-country trips, picnics, and hangar flying are just a few of the benefits when you join the members of your local Club. Here is a link: www.usua.org/Clubs/

Very good- complements my instructor's teaching. I'm learning to fly an ultralight with the same seriousness as if they were private pilot lessons and am getting as much professional teaching as possible. The temptation to hop in my Quicksilver now and go for a spin is pretty strong, but I'm going to let wisdom prevail this time for as long as possible.

Backpacker Thrulife , the primary thing you need to learn is NEVER, and I mean NEVER, let your flying speed get below the stall speed until you are touching the ground. Pulling and pushing the stick forward or back controls airspeed. The throttle controls whether you descend or not. Coordinate the two.

Roy, I really enjoy your flight videos. I have wanted to fly for years. Unfortunately, several years ago, I developed pretty bad flight anxiety. But I'm determined to beat it. I see a slow approach to learning to fly ultralights as a path to victory in this regard. Thanks again for the videos.

Of course your preoccupation with potential emergency landing sites is good airmanship. However, it seems just a little amusing to those of us from the Great White North where forests, mountains, rivers, and others such obstacles are in abundance everywhere. By comparison, your locale appears to be one giant alternate strip that one could hardly miss!

Nice flying, you should be an instructor. I am interested in these aircraft, they seem fairly safe but I would like to see some engine out landings, does it come down hard.

hI Roy, thanks for all the videos, I am just starting out with Quicksilver, initially started with a Tecnam P92 which was very easy to fly. My instructor informs me that to turn this aircraft its primarily the rudders that are used, the stick then is then less used. Is this your experience and why are the ailerons almost secondary? Regards from Sunny South Africa Charlie
@flygliders
@flygliders 9 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use one or both, ailerons important when landing in a cross wind
@jamesordwayultralightpilot
@jamesordwayultralightpilot 2 жыл бұрын
Basically rudder is positive input and ailerons are negative. If you turn with ailerons mostly you would need more throttle to maintain altitude. Not enough airspeed results in tip stall. Less throttle is needed with gentle rudder inputs all around and since you're letting the plane fly itself through the turn there's no risk of tip stalling. Or so I've heard. I gotta put my knowledge to the test next year when I start flying.

Go to Acusticom for helmet. store.acousticom.com/helmets/ultralight-helmets next pick out a david clark heatset, best one would be the large earcup one, like the military uses. buy used on ebay, after that you will need noise cancelling setup www.headsetsinc.com, it might be model MX-01-A, this system can be added to the headset, if you cant do it have a radio guy install it

I used to fly Quicksilver ultralights. They are a lot of fun to fly but you really need professional instruction before going up by your self, that is if you want to stay alive to enjoy it another day.

A couple of things about the Quicksilver MX from around 1982 with the snowmobile engine. Down at Lake Elsinore we all flew our first sole flights as that, no two seat practice, just hooked up via a two way radio to the instructor on the ground. A 15 minute 'guided' flight, after that you were on your own. The MX was so easy to fly, the only incident I witnessed was when someone sold a new MX to a girl and sent her out without a two way radio!! She became disorientated and didn't know how to land, so just kept going till she ran out of fuel. She then just did a series of uncontrolled automatic stalls and recoveries till she impacted the ground on the wheels but heavy enough to bend the upright framing. She was remarkably cool about the whole thing and our 'instructor' said he would fix the machine and use a radio to help her out next time. The other thing is about landing with the engine out, I did this after about 5 hours practice. In theory the engine is restartable form the seat, yes it is but with two hands. Turned the engine off at about 2,000 feet and tried to restart it. I was afraid to let go of the control lever and couldn't start it one handed so had to land 'dead stick'. It was actually easy but very frightening at the time. The MX was very strong, easy to fly with a great power to weight ratio and great fun.

In an ultralight, power loss isn't really dangerous if you know what you're doing. In these, you can land going no faster than 25 or 30 mph, some as low as 15 mph. It's not like a GA aircraft where you're landing at 60 to 70 mph. Just about any field will do just fine
