Bastiaan van Hoorn is skipper on the tugboat Adriaan of the Dutch towage company Kotug. De Adriaan was built in 1958 and in the engine room stands a Stork Ricardo ARO 216 of 375 hp from 1956. ‘In those days it was a strong boat, with almost 400 hp,’ tells skipper Van Hoorn. ‘She’s still under license and almost wholly original. We exploit it commercially and the proceeds go into the boat.’ Skipper Van Hoorn demonstrates the greasing and cranking of the engine, and treats us to some maneuvering on the Old Maas.

Wonderful! Some of my earliest marine memories are of tugboats on the Thames in and around London. The Port of London was still busy in those days and tugs towing strings of lighters were a common sight. The power station as far up river as Kingston-on-Thames was coal-fired and all the fuel was brought by lighter.

I know your videos focus on the engine, the skipper and the boat's history but I wonder if you could add a quick question to the skipper about the ships whistle? Mooie sleper ook. Niet verpest doordat veel oudere slepers tegenwoordig ook moeten kunnen duwen en er dan vreemde bouwsels aan de boeg gelast worden en stuurhutten die vele meters in de lucht kunnen.

voor de ondertiteling natuurlijk. Nederlands is een prachtige taal maar voor merendeel van de wereld is het niet te volgen. Ik zie veel te vaak reacties op dit kanaal dat mensen het fantastisch vinden maar er niets van begrijpen. Deze video is voor ons nederlands sprekende inderdaad dubbel maar voor alle anderen is dit precies waar ze naar zochten. Ik ben oprecht blij met aanpassing van deze video!

How would there be water in the pistons of it has sat for a while? Is it leaking in from coolant?

Hi Condensation happens in the cylinders , on some engines they have safety valves to get rid of the chance of water in the bores. sometimes if engines are overworked the safety valves would blow when you speed up and that is frightening , just like 6 shot guns going off. Cheers

Find a DMG 8 Enterprise engine to profile. Johnny B good would be right at home picking to the rhythm of an Enterprise.

I trained on Enterprise engines at Fort Eustis in 1967. I was amazed by the technology. Direct reversing, air start, and 600 hp at 600 rpm. One engine had an acrylic crank case cover so we could see the lower end in operation.

@@tracylemme1375 I owned 4 enterprises. One tug had a DMG 8 that was 500 HP at 400 rpm. Then I had a tug with 2 of the same engines except they had aluminum pistons and bigger injectors and were turbo charged and were 1350 HP each. But the first tug I owned had a small 6 cylinder enterprise that turned 360 RPM and was 200 HP. It was direct reversing also. The heavy duty low RPM engines were actually more powerful than their rated HP.

Een dieselmotor die twee jaar ouder is dan ondergetekende en nog helemaal origineel wat werd er in de vijftiger jaren toch goed spul gebouwd in Nederland. Helaas verloren gegaan.
