What are the advantages of a front mounted engine? What are the disadvantages of a front engine? Engine placement plays a big role in the dynamics of a vehicle, affecting weight distribution, moment of inertia, launch traction, acceleration traction, passenger space, and efficiency depending on the driven wheels used.

To answer Mahdi Ahmadi (who doesn't allow replies), yes, there are plenty of ways, some as easy as changing tire pressure. Slightly lower tire pressure up front vs. the rear can help reduce understeer. Stickier tires up front, weaker anti-roll bar up front, stiffer rear anti-roll bar, slightly increased negative camber up front. Fine tuning all of these is certainly not something that I can explain in a comment, but there are many ways to influence a cars slip angles (front and rear) and thus impacting the steering characteristics.

Wtf would you increase the negative chamber in a fwd on the front it makes it worse
@skaargan
@skaargan 9 жыл бұрын
Gaz Girl if u apply negative camber correctly, it will improve ur handling response due to larger surface contact, but it would make the tires wear out unevenly, or u can try use the cambertire which is made for the purpose of negative cambering. if i'm not mistaken, they have -2,-3, and -5. just google cambertire, it will show up

you missed 1 property of the front engine location - integration into impact management structure. it's very efficient in terms of cost and mass to have the motor, transmission and everything else absorb/deflect impact energy instead of a more robust crash structure.

Could you make a video that gives exceptions to this? Like, most hybrid sedans have the battery in the back so their weight is more evenly distributed. Or some hybrids that give electric power to the back but only gas power to the front. I watch a lot of Alex on autos's videos and it seems like he has to re-explain the wheel every time because hybrids are so diverse. It would be super cool if you or Alex had a comprehensive video on how all the current hybrids work.

I'd like to see more information on this as well. I think it is much more complicated than suggested. You have different differentials and computers adjusting wheel torque. 4WD is about engaging axles, not tires. There is also full time and part time 4WD. I've also seen videos of both AWD and 4WD vehicles not sending torque to tires that have grip. Differentials are another interesting topic (there is a lot of variety).
@BradyRaider2011
@BradyRaider2011 9 жыл бұрын
Marc, the KEY difference is AWD essentially has a center differential. This way it can be run all the time. 4WD does NOT have a center diff. Running 4WD down the highway can cause transmission failure as it winds up the trans. AWD can be driven down motorways. I do believe EE has made videos in this regard. Channel>playlists>look for drivetrain videos. I believe they are a bit old.

When I got my infiniti G37, AWD and RWD were same price and most of them had AWD.. but I purposely bought one with RWD because of the lower weight, better acceleration, and better MPG. The only downside is that the rear tires to tend to spin a bit when it gets wet.. but we don't get much snow here so AWD wasn't necessary for me

There is no ''best'' system. It all depends on the type of vehicle it's intended for. FWD is good for city cars, economy cars, family cars. It's for people who care more about everyday practicality than having fun. RWD is good for sporty or some luxury cars. It's for people who care more about having fun than everyday practicality. AWD is good for SUVs, some luxury cars, some family cars and other. It's for people who care more about security and enjoy nature (skiing, picnics and so on) I myself drive a Audi A3 quattro. I love the stability AWD gives and its capabilities in bad weather.

Now my question is this: the 70% distribution in the front should give more weight on these tires so they should grip more than the rear ones, but still they dont. I would love to know the answer

Another disadvantage for AWD, in regards to racing, is you have slow acceleration from a roll. Since traction isn't as much of an issue when you're going say, 40 mph, your car is heavyish, and you have that drivetrain loss. You're at a disadvantage in that situation as opposed to a dig. I could be wrong though.

Question: in the beginning of the video, for bullet point "safety of steering dynamics", you mentioned that placing an engine in the front makes the front heavier, thus giving it more understeer characteristic. I thought that more weight = more traction. If front is heavier than the rear, wouldn't you get oversteer? Please explain. thanks!
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 9 жыл бұрын
Dae Jin Kim It has to do with slip angles, and perhaps I'll make a more detailed video eventually, but think of it like throwing an arrow. The heavier part wants to stay in the front. This isn't entirely representative of what happens, but a simple idea. Also, as tires are loaded more, they tend to have a lower peak grip. That is to say, if you have a car sitting on a bank at a 45 degree angle, and it holds it, as you add weight, eventually the car will start to slide. It's complex, and I may make a video on this eventually, but basically the coefficient of friction decreases as the vertical load increases.
@charrboi
@charrboi 9 жыл бұрын
A higher weight results in a higher inertia of an object, which is basically an object's resistance to a force being applied to it. When you accelerate forward, the weight of the engine would push the front wheels down on the ground, as the car has no side-ways (lateral) momentum because the weight transfers to the back of the car during acceleration. During a turn, however, the weight of a heavier engine would tend to cause the car to continue traveling in the direction it is already traveling in, which is forward. (The car carries forward-momentum when it is traveling in a straight line). The heavier engine makes it more difficult and require more force to change direction at speed, due to the higher inertia. When the force required to turn the car is greater than the frictional force the tires can provide, that's when the understeer occurs. I hope my explanation is understandable.
@TheChannel1978
@TheChannel1978 9 жыл бұрын
Yes more weight = more traction but it is not a proportional relationsship. Looks up tire dynamics. You will find that the coefficient of friction first almost increases linearly with more added weights. But when getting close to the limit the coefficient drops, thus reducing grip at the front axles, and leading to understeer. So for maximum traction it is best to balance the weight over all driving wheels at any given point. For maximum turning, you balance the weight over the steering wheels, usually the front unless the car has a 4 wheel steering system. This is why shiftnig weight forwards (ie by jabbing the brakes slighty or breathing off the throttle) is beneficial to get a good corner entry in racing. Effects of weight transfer and tyre dynamics apply to all drive trains of course. The drive trains just bring certain characteristic with it that require a slighty change of driving style to get fastest lap times
@TheChannel1978
@TheChannel1978 9 жыл бұрын
9000Redline To add to my previous comment a FWD car tends to be frnot heavy. Which means in the steady state mid-corner (meaning no decel or accel happnening and instead all of the tire used for cornering) there will be more weight on the front axle. Due to added weight on the front axle the Cf will be lower on the front tires than the rear (on equal sized tires) and so the car will understeer (Note that 'understeer' as technical term in racing means the tires have a higher slip angle than the rear tires, so in a constant radius turn in an understeer situation you might still be able to hold the turn without coming off your line, but your front tires will work harder/heat up more/wear out faster as their slip angle is larger than the rears). Hope this explains it somewhat

AWD sedan is easier when cornering and driving in high speeds , you don't have to worry about oversteering or understeering like if you are driving FWD or RWD. the FWD sedan is good if you are drifting in a series of roundabouts by mixing between oversteering and understeering , and you need a manual gearbox to control the car by engage or disengage the clutch , hit the brakes or accelerator to control the gravity to the front or rear or even in the middle of your car . and if you want Saudi freestyle FWD cars are common here . the RWD sedan is good if you want to make some doughnuts, freestyle and drag racing .

FWD is the slowest since when you take off all the inertia moves behind the car and the front wheels loose grip. it will have the best MPG since it's the lightest RWD is faster in acceleration since the weight moves back and you have grip to put the power down since the weight inertia moves back. it's in the middle in terms of MPG AWD can be the fastest since it's most effective at putting down power. but it's the most heaviest and worst MPG.

You forgot to mention AWD vehicles are more stable and handle corners and turns better than either FWD, or RWD especially if they're adaptive putting more power on the wheels on the outside of the turn than the inside, eg: Audi's Quattro system. Most high end cars today are going with an AWD system.

Going around a corner is a matter of friction, so any drivetrain can do it. AWD simply has an advantage in accelerating, where the maximum force which can be applied is greater than 2WD vehicles, this applies to exiting a corner as well.

The limit is further with a vehicle with the weight centered. Think about when a stability system might interfere - perhaps when swerving around an object in the road. A car with center weight rather than front heavy will be less likely to understeer and remain balanced.

Been hearing how front wheel drive is superior to rear wheel for about 40 years now. I always suspected these claims came from the sales dept vs. the engineering department. My question is this: In switchable 2x4, 4x4 vehicles, I have never seen front wheel drive only when a 4x4 is disengaged. In the current quest for fuel economy, this seems to fly in the face of the claims of the fwd sales depts. Always thought that the only real advantage for fwd is realized by the accounting departments of the manufacturers and not the operators at all. Am I right?

john hanrahan I wouldn't say so, no. I don't know all of the models, but I know the CR-V is FWD when it doesn't need AWD. I believe the Golf R does the same thing, and I know there are many models out there that do. It's not always about track performance. Having the front wheels do the driving is generally considered to be safer (as it makes oversteer much more challenging to accidentally instigate), and it will yield better acceleration traction in adverse conditions (though, that's what AWD is for). Cheaper, and more efficient then sending power to rear with a front mounted engine. There are certainly real benefits.

Engineering Explained John is onto something there. Auto AWD cars/soft-roaders (CRV etc) drive on FWD when AWD is disengaged. Most proper mud-plugers and pickups disengage the front wheels and drive with the differential when you disengage the off-road gear. It has been the general practice for ages.
@burnerjack01

Pk Karimurio Not only that, but consider this: If you're into um, shall we say 'sport driving'?, would you rather drift by jacking your parking brake on your FWD or lay your right foot down and POWERSLIDE your RWD car? As a former Lunatic driver with a 'misspent' youth, I can tell you with experience that powersliding corners (properly known as induced throttle oversteer) is the only way to go. If that doesn't put a smile on your face you either scared the shit out of your ass and down your leg, or are already a professional racer or you live in the Matrix.

john hanrahan haha! true! I have both a FWD car and a RWD car and as old as the latter is I can't get myself to sell it. On a winding road, RWD is so much fun - pushes you out of the corner instead of pulling you, no squealing overworked front tires. I've done a fair bit of off-road too and on gravel RWD gets the heart rate right up. In mud FWD does help because you can turn the wheels to improve traction when things get very thick (and the engine rests on driven wheels) but I'm not keen on mud without 4WD. Want cheap simple fun -> RWD with a limited slip diff is the way to go, life is fun even without expensive FWD torque vectoring in hot hatches.

So engineered, in terms of motor sport, which drivetrain would you say is better. Rwd, or Awd?
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 9 жыл бұрын
woodie McKnight My name's Jason. :) I think that's a tough call. Ultimately AWD will be able to put down more power, but with RWD you save weight and efficiency, and at higher speeds the traction benefits of AWD decrease. Personally, I prefer AWD as it's more stable and I'm far from the world's greatest driver, but a mid-engine RWD setup is likely ideal. See Ferrari LaFerrai and McLaren P1. :)

@smithjoe5179
@smithjoe5179 8 жыл бұрын
+woodie McKnight for handling rwd usually is much better and doesnt understear as much. For drag racing awd gets better grip on street legal tires but on the track rwd gets better grip because of increased traction from a prepped track. also depends on how much power you have. on the street. rwd is faster unless you have so much power that traction is a huge issue. then awd becomes faster. bmw 335i is faster than 335xi in a straight line on the street stock.
@vintageman91
@vintageman91 8 жыл бұрын
+woodie McKnight In most sports you want the car to be as light as possible so you have to replace more parts to lightweight material wich might cost more and its harder to change direction unless using the handbrake wich you couldnt in early 4wd systems but also you can put more power to the ground and get better grip if its a sport that takes place on lose surfaces. So i would say rwd for asfalt and 4wd for gravel/snow. altought 4wd can be usefull on asfalt too if you manage to lighten the car enough etc. The most ideal in most motorsports is to have mid engine RWD/ 4WD specially if used on the loose.

+Joe Smith "for handling rwd usually is much better and doesnt understear as much." Depends, some people actually prefer understeer over oversteer as they feel more confident and they find it easier to fix mistakes too should it happen during cornering.
@RedWingsninetyone
@RedWingsninetyone 8 жыл бұрын
Also, with RWD, you are less likely to lose steering ability on loose surfaces. Reason being that your tires doing the steering are not receiving power and thus they will not spin like front wheel could. With both FWD and RWD, you will have to learn how to manage the throttle to avoid wheelspin.

So, why is it that so many fwd cars have the engine in sideways? I mean, I get that it would be easier to directly transfer the momentum to the drivetrain like this since it would be essentially turning the same direction, but why not put it in normal and try to even out the weight just a little bit? Couldn't one basically use the front wheel driving portion of an awd vehicle and run it that way for better weight distribution?

If you used a pick-up truck for what it was designed for (picking up) it would be very hard to get traction with FWD. If you added significant weight in the bed of the truck you will need RWD to help move everything. If it were FWD drive all the weight would be taken off the front axle and it would be very hard to get the truck to move. I'm sure Jason can explain that a lot better than I can.

Anguel Gutierrez This is an ignorant statement without any supporting evidence. FWD is better for the typical commuter with average weather (no excessive precipitation of any type), while RWD is preferred for a more sporty sensation, and is much more controllable in a race track setting as far as cornering. You cannot control understeer, but you can manipulate oversteer with practice. AWD has its benefits with grip, but to many, isn't as much fun or as rewarding as a RWD performance car.I own a 2012 Hyundai Elantra (fwd) I drive as a daily. It gets wonderful gas mileage, its very comfortable, and is a great car for the money. However, in the snow, its an absolute nightmare. Understeer leaves you helpless. I choose to drive my 2003 BMW 325i (rwd)with the exact same brand and version of all season tires. While the Elantra may have some initial traction advantage, the bmws rear wheel drive feels a bit more controllable when it comes to slight turns, or hairpin turns for that matter. I have yet to be impressed by anything fwd other than the Focus ST. If you dont drive a RWD vehicle like a complete hooligan in the snow, it will do its job.
