I was in a "math and physics" class in high school and I was very good at these subjects. Whole my family, friends and teachers were pressuring me to go to a university of technology and become an engineer but I really love a medical things. So I went to mechanical-medical engineering. Now I'm on my 3rd semester (1.5 year) and eventhough to this moment I passed all my courses and I didn't have major problems with studying I realized that engineering is completely not for me. I'm just not interested at all about mechanical, engineering stuff and I don't see myself in that industry but on the other hand I love "medical part" of my major eventhough it's only about 20% of whole time. In November I was so sad and depressed about my situation that I decided to quit my college and go to emergency medicine to medical university and become a paramedic. It was really difficult to make such a decision and tell my parents about everything (they were not delighted but accepted it and try to support me) and now I'm much better. My point is that if you fell that a major you're studing or job you're doing isn't for you better quit it because our life is to short to do things you don't like

@@kujojotarostandoceanman2641 dude just self study animation? Keep ID up for the cool jobs - color materials finish, or other things you may be interested in while being able to sketch characters. ID is cool because any craft or skill you develop enhances you as an industrial designer. Ceramics, textiles, sewing. If you go straight illustration cool. But man develop skills under the Id umbrella so that you can get any decent job that’s creating. You can always pursue illustration if you’ve been doing that as well.

Hi. I was planning to exactly what you did. I’m also just finished my third semester of mechanical engineering but I’m not doing well and rapidly losing interest. I’m taking a little break from school this semester to do something with my depression about this. I’ve had interest in the medical field and emergency medicine too so it’s nice to see someone who’s in basically the exact same situation as me. I want to ask how you decided to switch to the medical field? Was there an opportunity for you to see what the medical field is like? Was it more of a leap of faith that you would like medicine after taking a couple medical related classes? What advice do you have for someone who’s looking to transfer from engineering to medicine? Because for me I’m struggling to decide since medicine and engineering are completely different and if I switch I’d basically have to start over. Thanks.

I’ve just graduated and honestly the most important quality to have is grit and determination. I would say that 70% of my degree was just pushing through and not giving up, a lot of other degrees might also require it but in mech I believe we had the hardest moments of problem solving ,critical thinking, team work and time management. Would recommend the degree but I suggest everyone to get involved into student design teams/internships/ personal projects. Idk about the world but in my university we only designed possibly 30% of the time in the degree it self most of my proper learning happend during doing projects and student teams

Coworker was going into an engineers assistant role while going to school. Climbed up the ladder slowly. Ended up turning into lead engineer for product development while having no degree. He quit school and definitely had skills the company needed. Its not impossible to get a mechanical degree while making big money. He also works on the floor and manages 8 people and myself. This company is in the business of metal fixturing tables and fixtures for welding.

Problem I see with this video: Most engineers will only fill a niche of what you showed they do. The hands on part mostly boils down to quality control or testing of your specific pieces. Documentation plays a much bigger role than one might think. Technical drawings are pain in the a**. Depending on the job dealing with bureaucrats is a pain. You will not build any machine from scratch, alone, ever. You will deal in great, or more detail than you hoped for, with your component. If you get to be a project owner, not much technical problem solving is involved anymore.

I basically am not really liking the idea of working more than 50 hours a week. Tbh yes it is harder for a girl to find a job. Think about it. The people who’s mangaging these companies feels they need and want someone strong and efficient to do the work while also thinking they would demand less. This is where they tend to look more on hiring men than women. But in general you have a good chance of getting a job but again don’t be surprised these people prefers men
@arlowelee

I've heard generally in the job industry that there is a shortage of women in the stem field because it's a men dominated field. Employers nowadays are very progressive/inclusive and will actually seek women out over men in most cases because of that. so I think you will actually have an easier time finding a job compared to men.

You’re in 9th grade! You shouldn’t really expect to have a ton of original ideas yet. Original ideas come to people who have a large number of things in their working memory, and can combine them into something novel. Keep on keeping on, read more in different subjects (ie. biology, chemistry, agricultural science, ecology) use memory systems such as Anki to learn facts about these subjects (and Physics and Math) and in your free time you can watch creative engineering adjacent content on KZfaq like Breaking Taps, Technology Connections, Adam Savage, Applied Science, The Thought Emporium, etc. I’m sure others could recommend some more KZfaq channels to inspire creativity.

Just realized that I should’ve become a mechanical engineer. Lol, my story is actually stupid af, I was number one in high school at math, physics, and chemistry, but because my best friend pursued a law degree, I applied for this too. It was the dumbest decision ever, I really feel out of my thing, when I was a teen - I created a C++ game, was interested in robotics, dreamt about creating my own super jet. Winded up singing papers, here I go. The only time I feel good - when I read books and repair my car, or phone, or whatever. Really want to quit this crap and start anew, I don’t care if I’m too old (25), it’s never too late.

My friend, it's never too late. I made the decision to switch to Mechanical Engineering/CAD construction when I was 30 years old after spending 3 years taking my BSc in Software Engineering, and then 4 years in the market. Here in sweden we have the option to go to a "Profession School/Uni" that takes 2 years with a high degree of practical work out in the industry so it might be different for you, should you entertain the idea. Don't believe in the sunk cost fallacy of your past efforts. I have an old friend that dropped law school and became an airline pilot, and now he's considering to drop that after doing it for years and do something else. It's okay to change your mind, because being able to like all those hours you spend at your work is crucial if you want to have an easier time advancing your career. And rid yourself of any imposter syndrome. I know it helped for me. /Jim

We also have those schools in Russia, probably I should consider it as well. Like, of course I read something here and there every now and again, but I’m not as good as I used to be, unfortunately. So, I’m considering going to a school that’s kinda akin to the one you’ve just described, brush up on my science grasp and try to go to a uni in Europe or idk say Canada, looks like a great ambition that’s worth pursuing. I like to solve real problems, not complex ones. On the other hand, natural issues are easy to grasp, while having rigorous logic to solve rational problems is essential.

I've had an almost 40 year career as an ME with a P.E. license. I would have to say its been very rewarding. I have traveled all over the world solving very hard problems to the adulation of millions of people and glamorous women falling at my feet!.. Then I woke up..:). The first part is actually true and honestly I love hard technical challenges that usually involve a lot of math and physics. It paid pretty well.. In fact it paid well enough that I could afford to retire at age 52! hard to complain about that. The biggest downside for me was the lack of professional respect. You see I was born in the UK and any technician that fixes a washing machine calls themselves an "engineer". This is mostly why I emigrated to the USA where the term "engineer" means someone who is a technical professional (train drivers notwithstanding). Now I have no problems with technicians. I have worked with some fabulously smart/talented techs in my career and I could not have done my job without them. But Nurses do not get to call themselves doctors and its a similar difference.. Note in the UK medical doctors start their real training straight out of high school at age 18 and do a 5 year course.. Engineers do 4 years and often have Masters degrees so the education level for a Primary care Dr is about the same as an engineer and should command the same level of respect.

Return on investissements is low, in my country, I can only speak for France, but mechanical engineering job are very low if you stay in the technical side. Most of the time, you will not have an interesting job, and you will study all this theoretical maths and physic at school and nearly never use it during you job.

It improves blood flow to your brain and allows you to think about the subject when you aren't studying. I'm not sure if this is the exact reason for saying it, but it's something I've heard other people state.
