It's too bad Scania isn't available in the North American market.. I'd love to have a Euro style truck here in the States, especially with one of those Longline cabs. Would be great for tight urban deliveries as well as a lot of these mountain roads in the Pacific Northwest with length restrictions on combination vehicles.

I think the thing that really set Scania and Volvo apart from the crowd is that they build the engine and gearbox in house, companies like DAF just through a bunch of components together out the PACCAR parts bin and it definitely shows when driving it

@OCtheG
@OCtheG 3 жыл бұрын
@@Velkanis I believe I’m being quite civilized in optimizing the fuel and power efficiency of every machine that belongs to me. Emissions equipment abjectly decreases reliability, power, AND efficiency, and it is for those reasons the equipment doesn’t find itself on any of my vehicles. I’m not going to suffer second rate gear while none of our corporate overlords are beholden to the same expectation, we don’t start policing birthday candles because we’re concerned about forest fire soot, same logic applies here to passenger vehicles and their industrial counterparts. You focus on big players first, then start chasing minnows later. The fact we’re bothering with this at all should tell you the real polluters are directing energy to exactly where they want it: Not on them.
@Velkanis
@Velkanis 3 жыл бұрын
@@OCtheG while i absolutely agree on that and it is a thing, i like my diesel engines doing what they do best: lots of torque, fuel sipping and undestructability... yet you should still be aiming that for as long as we can we should minimize the harm that unregulated engines will inevitably produce since they are everywhere... yes they are STILL the lesser compared to the rest of human industry yet they still have a big noticeable footprint, example: here in the mayor capital city of my country, chile, was presented with an amusing sight created thanks to quarantines: pollution had dropped so radically hard because people didnt go out that you could climb the adjacent hills of the city and you could take a clear picture of downtown santiago for the first time in decades. this alone speaks volumes to the reality of it. now you, logically speaking, SHOULD prefer the better good for not only you and everyone else around you but those that will continue beyond your lifespan... that should be the rationality but its hard coded in human nature to be selfish and thats ok. the reliability downgrade at the end of the day is the bean counters trying to save pennys by using chepo solutions, because i can assure you, no matter how mediocre an engineer team can be, they'll usually have both a proper solution or a patch solution for any problem they encounter but the bean counter is the one that will make the choice... and you should already know how those go...

Just a hunch, but if it malfunctions, or wears out (the valve) then the valve would remain closed, providing all the oil into the pan. My dad was a Scania truck mechanic for 30 years. He loved the V8's. If I remember correctly, his favorite was the Scania 141 or 142. Can't quite remember! Gotta admit it kind of rubbed off in regards to the sound. I do take myself in stopping up, if I see or hear a Scania coming by.

Harley Davidson,BMW Mseries,Porsches,Ferrari’s.....even Formel 1.....No engine roar can compete with the dark sounded rolling thunder the V8 Scania produces.....preferily under heavy load....and little damping in the exhaust....gooseskin guaranteed....

I'm in the market for a 4X4/6X6 Truck for an Off-Road Camper and I'm so mad that I can't afford a Scania. Not even bc how good they are off-road, but bc of the V8. The best sounding truck engine of all time!

Try sourcing a used Swedish army truck...I’ve had one for years....at over 30 yrs of age it had only covered just over 90.000km!! On top of that it had been protected very well against rust;looking tatty on the outside (like I love it!!) the chassis and cabine structure were absolutely spotless.....mine was 2wd btw....surely in the army they had 4wd trucks too...good luck!!

Love how after treatment and emissions are contrary;( and the probability that emissions cost just as much as the actual motor

I wonder if a power recovery turbine has been considered downstream of the turbocharger exhaust. Such a device would put a few more bits of power and torque back to the crankshaft before the exhaust is dumped overboard. Such PRT's have been used on large piston engined air liners with great success in the 1950's, but the usage of such devices ended. when turbo-jet engines took over.

The mechanics called them parts recovery turbines.The Wright 3350 had 3 that were fluid coupled to the crankshaft.Each turbine added about 120hp.The engines were called turbo compound engines.

I passed my test in and worked a Mercedes 1628 V8 non turbo for 5 years. 16 speed ZF box with that high rev V8 you soon learned the art of using a range changer/ splitter lol, then i got a Daf 3300 ATI now that was a truck. Never really liked Scania apart from the 164, front screen is a bad design when raining and there’s something about Scania brakes …. when you first start pushing that pedal it almost feels like there’s no bite which makes you push more when you don’t need to especially when heavy.

To all other manufacturers. Take notes. That’s how you make an epic engine. Only Scania still has the ball’s to make a V8

Diesel V8 sounds like any other tractor engine. This is a truck, not a car. Misguided marketing, can't be as efficient as a 6 cylinder engine with the same horsepower.

The reverse gear is excellent I always lower it for getting on to bays or under trailers. Press and hold down on the gear paddle in reverse and there is much more control. The new Scania is brilliant but a bit uncomfortable to drive long periods. Maybe just me?
