Foden wasn’t great in the Euros but imagine thinking benching him is the best option. England struggled as a team collectively. Being selective about what player to blame isn’t the primary issue, it’s the team balance and the managers style of play not complementing the team he chooses.

England were shit before the tournament and somehow still were worse than I thought possible. The fact that they made the final is unreal. Last minute over head kicks, extra time, penalties, come backs from behind and awful penalty decisions going their way all whilst playing shit teams and they still were beaten. 20 minutes of being decent at best in the opening game and good for the first half of the Holland game was all they showed. The rest wasnt just average it was 100% horrific and as bad as I have ever seen England play.

You’re digging out Matt but he was absolutely right in his diagnosis of what the final would be like. You all said “no chance England only has 30% possession against Spain”. Terry went through Spain’s stats to illustrate that they’ve only seriously dominated possession once in the tournament. Matt said; this is how Southgate will play, we won’t have the ball. This is what England fans do every tournament. They get tribal about their players and they demand the big names, the tech merchants start the games. Gallagher doesn’t have the technique of the others but he works his socks off, presses incredibly well and is one of the best in the prem at winning the ball back high up the pitch. England fans perish the thought of a player like that starting for them because their heads immediately go to “if we don’t start him we can play this other bloke who is technically superior”. It isn’t about picking the 11 players with the best technique - it’s about picking a team that works. Unless your team dominates the ball, you need players who put a shift in defensively and are good at winning the ball back. It’s not about shoehorning in another flashy player every time - sometimes you’ve got to play the dour workhorse who puts in the shift that allows your better players to shine. England fans never accept this truism - because it always comes back to “this player is better than that player so he should start”

Winning in or after extra time comes at a cost. How many more minutes did the England team play compared to Spain? The mainstays must have been tired (particularly after a long season) which lead to sloppy play. This stems from Southgate's team selection and poor in-game management including substitutions.

The reason why Mainoo is so good in the United team, is because he is allowed to be the midfield controller. Southgate playing him together with Bellingham and Foden is criminal because all of them want to drift in midfield to control play. Kane also makes it worse by drifting into midfield as well. So there is no width. Watch the match carefully.

Gutted! Well done to Spain for a fantastic performance and team. We (England team) represented themselves well. The brave decisions by Southgate to make the subs early was great. Michael Carrick would be my first choice but honestly if I were the FA I would just hire Lee Carsley (England u21s manager) and his entire backroom staff. ENG players did tire more towards the end, but that's what happens when you stumble and bluff your way through a tournament, needing extra times and PENs to win. Kane played in all 7 games, like 'Boneless' in Vikings! Spain won all 6 previous games, resting 10 for their dead rubber 3rd group game, ENG practically fielded the same team every game. Terry, you can say all the maybes, "Maybe if Ollie Watkins. . . Maybe if Palmer", forget the maybe's, dea; with definitelys, that being Kneelgate definitely shouldn't have been manager in the first place! Or as he was, then sacked after throwing away the Euro's v Italy, bottling it v France and now this tournament. When the ENG manager pines for his Kalvin-Comfy blanket, you know you're in big trouble!

Time for a change. Southgate has improved our ability to play tournament football but is hamstrung with playing it safe and his tactics as a defender. Needs someone with the license to bring through young talent with the attributes to compete technically with the best even if it means stepping backwards to go forwards. The obvious choices are Pep or Klopp.

Put some respect on La Liga teams.. Real Sociedad and Athletic Club are big teams in Spain. Spanish fans are ist? What the F are you talking about? Foden and Saka dont run the channels beyond Kane when he drops deep. Kane doesn't work with Foden Saka and Bellingham wanting to get the ball and dribble with time on it. Kane needs actual wingers who will run the channels behind him.

I have been saying all tournament that Walker is washed already and doesn't offer anything going forward, every cross is wild and no control and his positioning by the 65th minute goes to shit cause he is tired already. Should have started Trent for this game. Could have brought Trent in as a sud as well. Just bad management and the players being played game in and game out hurt England in the end cause their legs were gone by the 60th minute. Bellingham was exhausted as well.

I agree with you 💯%. They are all overrated. You remember when they touted lampard & Gerard as best midfielders in their prime in the world- they were wrong. That was the era when Xavi & Iniesta were plying their trade- without a shadow of a doubt better technically & otherwise than lamps & Gerrard. We are going to see the same thing again at the World Cup.

If Southgate wanted to insist on playing kane he should have played a system with 2 fast wingers crossing balls in not 2 no.10s. The setup, tactics, formation was all wrong. Spain have technically efficient players with a lot of flair who all know their specific jobs and without fault, executed their strategy for 90 minutes and won the game with a precision move and finish right at the end.

When Spain are under pressure and win the ball, they have technical player who can hold onto it and accurately pass the ball to their teammates who are similarly adept at receiving the ball in tight situations and moving it on. Very often, England in the same situation simply cleared the ball back into Spain's possession or passed the ball without the same accuracy, not giving the receiver of the pass any advantage and isolated.

Southgate 101. Constantly plays the same 10, 11 players. Starting Kane every game, especially against the Netherlands and tonight, is pure cowardice. He hasn't been fit all tournament. Everyone could see and including Southgate which he admitted AFTER THE FINAL that Kane isn't fit!!. Pure fucking incompetence. Watkins offered more this entire tournament than Kane did. And the biggest FUCKING blunder in this tournament and I have mentioned it but it's facts, was not starting Trent in his rightful position as one of the best RBs England has ever had and in the world!. I 100% don't trust the FA to appoint the right manager after Southgate, but he has to go! He can't get the job done! And the Harry Kane curse LIVES ON!! Also, we're not coming to the end of Harry Kane for England. The guy is 30yrs old. Had a terrible injury towards the end of the season, he just wasn't fit enough for this tournament and didn't suit the system. That's all it is and hopefully the next time England play, will have a new competent manager!. Saka should of come off for Bowen or Gordan. Absolute joke these two couldn't get more than 10 minutes!
