Nottingham Forest Football Club and Notts County Football Club are only separated by the river Trent.
They're the closest professional football clubs in England. Notts County are non league (currently National League) whereas Nottingham Forest are in the EFL Championship.
I couldn't come to Nottingham and not mention Brian Clough & Peter Taylor! LEGENDS!!!

Brian Clough. What a guy. He turned Derby from an average 2nd Division club into league champions in five seasons, then he did the same with Forest, except there it only took three years and he'd won two European Cups by the fifth full season as well. How I wish he was around today so that Daniel Levy could sign him up. If he couldn't fix Tottenham no-one could.

When you say “ Here is the River Trent” at the beginning, that’s actually the Grantham Canal. As a Forest fan, I’ve been to some great Nottingham derbies. Some players played for both clubs - Justin Fashanu was one. He got sent off playing for Notts against Forest.

I love that the City ground of Forest is technically on the County side of the river and thats Notts County actually play on the city side. A nice little quirk of Nottingham :) also that horrible bit of water at the start of the video was not the Trent it was the end/start of the Grantham Canal which feeds in/out of the trent. I’ve seen County dozens of times over the years despite living in Newcastle. My Dad’s family lived in Notts and my Dad is a boyhood County fan. We also been travelling to a few Notts away games every season for nearly 20 years, including current National League games. The derby games between County and Forest are keenly contested but, as you say, infrequent and not as intense as some. It’s a shame the broken wheelbarrow didn’t get a mention but it was good to see Jimmy Sirrel covered. COYP.

At the beginning of the video you where walking along the towpath of the disused Grantham Canal. It joins the River Trent between the City Ground and Lady Bay Bridge. I understand that plans are being formulated to reopen the canal and make it navigable again. The bridge that you used to walk over to Meadow Lane is called Trent Bridge. I have walked across it many times when going to see Forest play. I have heard that Stoke City is currently the oldest club to be playing in the football league. Stoke City were actually called Stoke Ramblers when originally founded in 1863. The club changed its name to Stoke City in 1878. Forest were originally a Shinty team who then formed an association football team called Nottingham Forest in 1865. This currently makes Forest the oldest club in the EFL.

They were pretty successful through the 70's when I used to frequent Meadow Lane as a youngster. Funnily enough, I was a Derby County schoolboy when they won the league under Clough, before he moved down the A52 to Forest. There used to be a competition called the County Cup & featured Forest, Notts & Mansfield - I remember seeing Notts beat Forest 3-0 in front of 20,000 fans. Shame they don't have that anymore!

When I was little boy in short trousers (I'm now 79!) I lived 10 mins walk away from Notts ground. At half time, they used to open the gates so many was the time I watched the second half. At one time, Notts had both Tony Hateley and Jeff Astle in their forward line and whenever they scored fewer than four goals, we felt cheated! The rivalry between Notts and Forest was never that intense because, as you referred in your excellent video, they were always so far apart in Divisions. Forest are now looking forward to Premier League football again, while Notts still languish in non-league. Although I live in Norfolk now, I still return to Nottm to meet my old grammar schoolfriends. In summer we go to Trent Bridge to watch the cricket (usually a 20/20) but in winter it is usually Meadow Lane then ice-hockey in the evening. Cracking video, well done. Sorry you couldn't get into the grounds.

Also, as a younger Forest fan and sports journalist I can confirm that Notts County isn't really considered much of a derby game these days. Still a great occasion. He was a gentleman. My mam looked after Mr Clough in the DRI. He never went private. Because of his politics. He didn't want young girls giving him a bed bath. If he had to go through it he preferred nurses his own age, like me mother. When he left he got NIgel, to go out and buy chocolates for the nurses. I know that, because my mother met NIgel near The Spot in Derby and she told him how she looked after his father and he told her how he bought the chocolates. So have respect for Mr Clough. He told us that everything that Forest had should have been Derbys - it was basically most of the main assets of the Derby team he created that gave "Notts"Florist success. He lived in Derby because Derby was in his heart, No matter how much they deny it the "Tree huggers" know I come with the truth. But I have no bitterness towards them, its all friendly banter ...but same cant be said about our chairman Sam L and his battles with Clough ...all this crap we are going through today can be traced back to him and his ego.

@@visixnnottz7506 Don't be whack! My Naughty by Nature crystal ball suggests all we need to do is throw those corrupt bastards at the Football league another bung and we will be ok, well that's how I interpret the reading "For what it's worth I'm comin' from the edge of the Earth I'm the only kid I know that was worse since birth Everybody that know me was worse to curse My first words mommy spank the fucking nurse If I was a doctor chill I'll give you six months to live Another six if you can't pay the bill I do what I will" We just pay the fucking bill, Anyway we are Ready for dem.

as a County fan, maybe dirty Mansfield shouldve got a mention as our biggest modern rivals. or maybe its good you overlooked them. don't mind Forest at all but i'd love if we could have a proper rivalry in the city again one day

Love these videos.... Iam a chesterfield supporter and we've played Notts County many times... We had a great goalkeeper called Steve cherry who we got from Derby County... Notts County liked him and brought him from us.... Which left us without a 1st choice keeper so what did we do?.... Well we just took Mick Leonard from Notts County.... So we swapped keepers... And what a great servant ML was 👍

We really don't want any Saudi or Russian oil cash, thanks :) Forest and Notts have a good relationship. Just watched Forest U23s play at Meadow Lane, where we play quite a lot. We send them quite a few loan players as well. Harry Arter is there now. No animosity necessary, just a good working relationship.

Nottingham Forest also we’re the first team to wear shin pads, a referee used a whistle and the first match to have floodlights. A guy from Nottingham founded AC Milan and Arsenal wear red and white because Forest sent them a kit

Interesting footie factoid: The penalty kick was introduced as a result of an incident involving Notts County quite legally putting a wall of all 11 men on the goal line for a free kick.

Should visit Mansfield Town’s Field Mill (One Call Stadium) as it’s the oldest ground in the football league… been hosting football since 1861! Nottinghamshire is steeped with footballing history!

Nice video dude. Also just for the record as it is a pet peeve of many Nottingham Forest fan. They don't like being referred to as Notts Forest. This is mainly because Nottingham Forest were founded in the city boundaries at Forest recreation ground and tend to represent the city of Nottingham rather than the Nottinghamshire county which is short for Notts. But also Brian Clough always used to scold journalists and pundits for referring to his team as Notts Forest, "Young man when referring to this team you use the proper name which is Nottingham Forest" he'd tell them, so it kind of stuck. Many other teams fans say Notts Forest to forest fans just to wind them up. What's annoying is when the city ground was built it was in the city boundaries until the 60s when it got taken over by rushcliffe borough Council, meadow lane is still in the city boundaries even though the two grounds is so close. There is actually a soccer academy based in San diego California USA that is actually called Notts Forest so I always refer people to them when calling Nottingham Forest "Notts Forest". So basically if anyone is wondering why Nottingham Forest hate being referred to as Notts Forest that is why.
