It took England 95 minutes and a moment of magic from Jude Bellingham to finally score against Slovakia, with Kane sealing the win after an extra time winner. Southgate’s team narrowly avoid an embarrassing defeat as in form Switzerland awaits them in the quarter finals.
Elsewhere, Georgia took a shock lead against Spain after an own goal from Le Normand. However, the lead didn’t last long and Spain came back to win 4-1, sending home the tournament’s lowest ranked team.
Jimbo is joined by Mark Carey and Tom Williams.

Mainoo was there to receive the ball, under pressure, from the back four. Repeatedly, Stones refused to pass it into him…just knocking it side to side to side to side blah blah… That’s Mainoos thing…taking it in tight areas and beating the press.

The problem with England is that they’re trying to be something they’re not. The English are culturally inclined to playing an intense high energy football as opposed to the slower more possession based football that they’re trying to play. There’s no authenticity about this English team similar to the discourse around the Brazilian side at the moment, both are trying to be something they’re not and will never be. England wants to be more like Spain and Brazil wants be more like European teams but neither will truly succeed until they fully embrace who they are

To say Jude was absent before the goal is untruthful. Easily top 2 in the starting XI next to Mainoo. He had good stats, but these are stats of an 8, not a 10. Needs better team management • 55 touches • 87% pass accuracy • 2/3 long balls • 1 big chance created • 3/4 dribbles completed • 10 duels won (most) • 4 tackles • 3 times fouled (most) • 2 shots, 1 goal

England needs to go to a back 3. Palmer gave Bellingham more premise to overload the opponents box as Cole was giving them something to think about. That extra man in the mix-up top is what done it

You know, to say that people go over the top on social media, but then say you want Southgate to pick the same team because you find the rage on social media humorous is pretty hypercritical.

Southgate is truly showing he isn’t a mediocre manager but an awful coach. Sticking to a system that clearly isn’t working. Awful team selections, awful game management, no plan, no organisation, no pattern of play or movement, awful late substitutes and when things are not working sitting passively doing nothing.

Foden's great but it's pretty damning when you stray offside like he did for our disallowed goal. He's not the only one this tournament who's not at it, just don't see him pulling something out the bag in the same way Bellingham did though. Really need Gordon or Palmer in his place.

I thought they played fine. Certainly better than the last two games. Patient against solid opposition. The lack of left-footed players on the left is the only big concern.

Why Chilwell or another legitimate half decent left back was not selected in a squad of 26 when Shaw hasn’t played since Feb is the question Southgate needs to answer again. His initial reasoning was BS

It feels insulting to the players to criticize them. Apart from some sloppy defending and Bellinghams yellow card I don’t think they did a whole lot wrong. There are no tactics. Rice and mainoo couldn’t buy a pass through the lines. Saka gets the ball and is so isolated he can’t do anything but lose it. If trippier or foden get the ball on the left the other immediately makes a run in the channel to nowhere. Bellingham and Kane invisible until their goals. Same complaints as the last few tournaments - one common denominator

In defense of Southgate, I think past England teams don't get the equaliser- they hit long balls for the last 25 minutes, lose all hope of keeping possession, and everyone knows the game is lost long before the whistle. On the negative side, bad defending, bad attacking, bad midfield. Bad plan A, no plan B. Bad individual performances, bad use of squad. Bad tempo, bad game management. And what are we on, 7 yellow cards now? We obviously weren't ready for this tournament to be honest.

hahahahaha! How is that a defence of Southgate, that he happens to have Bellingham who can scored a bicy from a throw in and flick on?
@samwiseshanti
@samwiseshanti Күн бұрын
@@jbri1 because I'm saying I don't think it would have happened if we were under one of our past managers. What's not to get? If Bellingham was in Hodgeson's team, or Capello's, then that bicycle kick wouldn't have happened, in my opinion. I mean, I spent collectively hours of my life watching Rooney not score important goals in England games. But obviously you shouldn't take my comment as praising Southgate, I am literally highlighting the one single positive. I listed the negatives and I think they include just about every way a manager can fail.

@@jbri1 take it from someone who's spent 30 odd years watching various England teams looking for a late to save themselves from embarrassment, pinging the ball into the box over and over again with no plan or genuine hope- 99% of the time, a player in that position will take a touch, try to do the safe thing, bring it down and hit it, but it never comes off because there isn't space or time. Bellingham had someone behind him, past England players in those moments have so often 'left' the ball to the next guy. Usually a player in that moment will shrink away and do the safest thing- they don't usually pull bicycle kicks out. Just because any pro footballer can do it, doesn't mean they can do it in those circumstances.
