Let’s take a stroll together as we tour all the roses blooming in my English cottage garden here in UK. It’s early June and the rose display is only just starting, with all the elegant colours and the incredible fragrance, rose season is a garden delight to be treasured.
I will only ever recommend products that I use regularly and believe to be good value.

Hello Annette, thank you for the rose tour. You have so many and I'm glad the ones with the new obelisks are budding for a display this year. I was at a garden many years ago with a fantastic large rose, which was pruned very nicely. I picked a single bloom because it looked and so perfect and the aroma, I'm sure, you would love. I stuck in in a pot when the bloom was over and the next year I was very pleased to see it had taken. I haven't got it in the ground yet, and one year it almost died, but I nurtured it back. I think of all flowers the rose has an extra special place in all gardens. You really are tempting me with the Harlow Carr Rose, but I have to resist at least until I have a place for it. X
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Ай бұрын
So glad you enjoyed it Jimmy. Wow, you did so well to get the rose to root in. Harlow Carr doesn't get too big, especially if it's pruned hard, like I do - I don't want mine to get too tall because it will create too much shade. 🌹

@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Ай бұрын
Hi Kathy, a peony hoop sounds like it should help. My Princess Alexandra of Kent roses have nice strong stems but they blooms are super big and heavy. It may be that yours could be pruned a little harder this year to strengthen the stems. I try not to leave ANY spindly stems at all - I take out all but the fattest oldest stems when I prune. Someone made a comment on my rose pruning video that I prune 'hard', which I do, but I believe it helps the roses. 😊

Hello Anette. I'm glad you're speaking about Mme Alfred Carrière. I planted her in the autumn 2022, and last year, she grew so quickly to the top of the arch with really thick stems but very few flowers. This year the floppy stems were up at the top only so I cut her back by half in May 😱. Well she's bushing out but like you I have my doubts. She is in full sun. Also I've taken cuttings from what I chopped off, and it looks as though they've taken. I may decide to start again and put her somewhere else since I think she may be a little too vigorous for an arch. I hope you keep us informed about this rose. Many thanks

@roxanaiacob2797
@roxanaiacob2797 Ай бұрын
Certainly inspired by the tour! Shame I don't have the room for the Generous Gardener, really like the contrast between the reddish stems and the bud/bloom colour. I have Desdemona and love it, puts on two beautiful shows a year, and to me the bloom shape, colour, and scent has it all. I agree is a bit droopy, although less so than other David Austins. And doesn't do well with wind, but I guess many roses of her type wouldn't. I struggle too with Madame Carriere which grows spindly and messily on my East facing wall, finally just about reaching the first floor in its third year. Had a few blooms this year, but they last a short time, and like you I don't care about their shape. All would be forgiven if they were plentiful as scent is nice but are not, and my rose has plenty of black spot too. I was hoping that now when it finally reaches more light out of the inhospitable corner where it is planted it will do better, but somehow I doubt it. I have seen it grow equally messily sending out long shoots on an East situation on someone else's channel, yet was doing great, full of bloom and a much tamer habit for the same person in a South facing position. Feel like maybe we've fallen victims to marketing with this one.
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Ай бұрын
Thanks Roxana. It gives me hope to know you love Desdemona - I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for a better display in years to come. Yes, the Mme A Carrier I think is a con - I will definitely try to re-train it this year but I don't hold out much hope because the growth habit is so bonkers! 🤣🌹

@@cottoverdi I will be interesting to see how it responds to re-training. From what I read pruning advice is rather contradictory, some say hard prune, others that it doesn't like pruning at all, at least not in the early establishing years. Confusing to say the least.

Love your roses, Annette. I see your roses have had leaf cutter bees busy with them . Mine have been too- never had so many 'bites' on my roses. Funny, but I didn't seem to mind the bees eating the leaves, unlike slugs, which I quite resent, lol .😂 I have been waiting on my roses to bloom since early spring as many of them were bought last year and were not at their best. They are now all in bloom and looking amazing. I particularly love Mary Delaney, Koko Loko, Warm welcome and Charles Darwin. I don't usually like yellow but needed a rose for a shady spot and it really brightens he area. I also bought Buttercup, which I don't like. It has a very lax habit and thea blooms face down. I may dig iy it up and replace it with a Roald Dahl. I am looking forward to buying some new climbers this Autumn to replace roses that have died- I think I must have something in the soil as since I planted them 12 years ago, I have lost one every year 😞 I now plant into very large pots and all re doing well, although they take a lot of space when planted that way. But I love roses so much that I couldn't possibly be without them. Your roses will look an absolute picture in a few weeks when they are in full bloom- how exciting. Happy gardening 🙂 x

Thanks so much Be. Yes, I seem to have had quite a few nibbles this year but I tend not to worry about that - it's the black spot that bothers me because it makes the roses to sick and affects their bloom vigour. @@cottoverdi I have the new Peter Beale RNLI rose 'With Courage', on my wish list.I thought it was so pretty. I have mainly pinks and salmons and a white, but the yellows were bought for a shady spot behind an arch in the pump garden. They do bring the area to life. Warm welcome is on the arch of the exit from the pump garden, to the hot border, as an introduction to colour and it is a very floriferous, single rose. It was recommended on a Sarah Raven podcast I listened to. I am quite tempted by the Blush Noisette you have featured, previously. for the opposite side of the pump garden by the white border 🙂I was very disappointed with My Hawaiin coral peony as it bloomed white. I think the nursery sent me the wrong plant. That is so annoying when that happens!

How do you find the sceptered isle reblooms? I find mine is good for it's first flush and then doesn't really return

Hi Harry - yes, mine don't often re-bloom well so it can be a little disappointing but I have planted around them so that I don't miss the blooms too much. If I'd known, I probably wouldn't have chosen this particular rose for the entrance to our driveway. 😕. Maybe I should try feeding with more regularity over the coming months. It's worth a try. 😊

How did you manage to bring out those lovely buds?

Gosh, I don't know! Is it the weather? I pruned them hard and they've been fed twice already this year, one liquid feed as they started to leaf out, and then a pelleted feed a few weeks ago. If only I knew the trick, then I could repeat it next year!

Yeah could be the weather too sometimes we change our method of fertilising our roses and we didn't remember which one is working well. I have more than 30 roses in my garden but never satisfied with the flowers and sometimes feels like giving up in the variety of fertilizer we have on the market here in Australia or maybe my method of fertilising them isn't correct

Love it❤❤❤ . Annette, maybe you can help me with this one : I planted what was to have been James Galway and the roses look nothing like the gorgeous, tissue paper, delicate roses like those you have or those on David Austin's website. Mine are quite ordinary and unremarkable. Did yours look the same as they do now ( as far as form and color ), or did they take time to look this way as they established? I contacted DA and reported it to them already. Just wondering if I may have been wrong.🥹 I will say this, though, in my own defense, the roses that I planted do look like Ancient Mariner

Thanks so much Jane. Your James Galway should look like mine/DA website right from the start! It sounds like you've either been sold the wrong rose or your grafted rose has died and it's the rootstock that is blooming - they are often unremarkable but have lots of vigour and disease resistance. I wonder what DA will say? Interesting conundrum. Hope you can work it out. 😊
