I’m a native speaker I just love watching these videos because they bring so many details of the language to my attention that I never noticed! It’s very interesting and I can appreciate just how difficult it must be to learn English. I want to say to all the people reading this who are learning English, please do not feel too worried about getting things right all the time. In fact a lot of English speakers say things wrong! The example that came to mind is “bear” and “bore”. I live in Chicago and I hear a lot of people say “beared”. Maybe it’s just a Chicago thing but I find a lot of people add “ed” to past tense words. Bleeded instead of bled is common. I think people know it’s not technically correct but that’s just how we talk lol. There is also an interesting thing people do here. If you want to put a lot of emphasis on a word you add “ed” at the end even if it’s incorrect. So if I’m passionately telling a story I might say “I cut my finger while chopping an onion last night and that b*tch BLEEDED”. I’m not sure if that makes sense but long story short English speakers have weird tendencies and what matters most is your effort.

Great videos. I've heard several native speakers misuse the past participle of run as "have ran." When I was in grammar school we diagramed sentences to learn their parts. I learned even more English by taking Spanish in high school.

I've shown my students this video and I play like five times its beginning when you say"And you just have to memorize them." We're not native speakers. We won't learn them on a daily basis. We won't hear them five, six, ten times a week. Our mothers won't say them to us. So, there's no other way. MEMORIZE them. But, reading from a list is not a good option. What Rachel did in this video is great. You learn them with CONTEXT. Context is what doesn't let us confuse meat and meet or aunt and ant. Thank you, Master of the English Pronunciation Universe, Rachel.

Glad I grew up speaking English, it looks like a bear to learn as an adult. (oh, I bet that sentence may have been confusing to some on this channel). I watched this video to compare with the ones I have been watching to learn some French and Spanish. English looks much more random and confusing when you try to make rules to learn it.

When I spent a year in the US after six years studying English at school, I learned and used properly new verbs without being obliged to learn a list. I felt it because irregular verbs are not sorted in alphabetic order but there are verbs groups. I can't explain it I feel it. I'm speak French and I think that English is easier. Irregular verbs are grouped : cut-cut-cut, put-put-put, think-thought-thought, bring-brought-brought and others. It would be interesting to make groups than alphabetic list. Phil, Belgium.

Rachael, great video! It shows that while other languages have more specific rules, English grew by absorbing words from other languages, along with their rules. So some words follow one set of rules, others follow completely different rules! It's why English is one of the hardest languages to learn. And the richest! If there's no English word for something, we absorb a word from another language. In French, they make a French word to describe that thought. "Those French, they have a different word for everything!" - Steve Martin. Thanks for the video!
