English Knitting Style - Are all fingers equal?
So which fingers do what when you're knitting?
While focusing on the yarn and stitches it can be easy to not realise how different fingers are equally important for different reasons.
So today let's figure that out and take a look at left and right hand when knitting and purling.

Absolutely the best tutorial for this type of knitting. I have looked at so many videos, read explanations in several books, and nothing compares to the ease of understanding what each hand is doing. Thank you so much and now I have to sign up for your newsletter and classes as well!

As a new knitter, this helped me so much. I didn't know what to do with my right hand and after a while, my hand started to hurt with all the extra movement I was doing. Thank you for this video!

I've knitted like this for over sixty years, if you knit with the tips of the needles ,you will knit more quickly, and make smaller movements, you will find this easier on your hands . It's not nessacery to push the right hand needle through the stitch more than just the tip. You can knit for several hours, without having to stop, if you use smaller movements,and hold the needles loosely.

Hi Peter, a fellow English style knitter! I’ve tried this over the years but as I tend to knit with thicker needles this doesn’t work as well. The stitch will likely end up too small due to the tip taking longer distance to reach stated size. While I don’t use them very often the size 12mm for example may not be 12mm for 1-2inches from the end. Happy knitting 🧶

Watching your videos some very good tips. I knit as you do English knitting. I can manage most knitting patterns but my edges are always very loose. Any tips that would help would be appreciated Thanks

Loose edges suggest that all the stitches might be a bit on the loose side, even if they're not noticeable. Have a look at this video, with loose knitting tips, I'm pretty sure I cover the edge stitches too. happy knitting 🧶 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gcqEdsubrdDPp6M.html

Hi, I don't even think about how i hold the needles or yarn anymore, but as i crochet as well i am very used to using both hands simultaneously and independently. Lots of practise and now with years of experience it's quite funny looking back at a beginner's video and thinking how you do this yourself 😄

It’s quite fascinating to look at the movement close up. Doing it again to make this video made me notice things again that I’d forgotten I done for years.

Hannah, quite interesting. I’m a lefty, and my left hand holds the yarn (and tension). Now I understand why my grandmother found my style frustrating. 🧶💕

Yes, we likely all knit differently even if it’s slight changes or shifts of fingers and thumbs. Makes sense for you to feel more comfortable with left hand holding the yarn. Happy knitting 🧶

I was taught to knit this way 60 plus years ago. I have tried Continental style knitting but always come back to this way. However, I have found it difficult to try out different cast on methods knitting in the English way . I have really struggled with Italian tubular cast on which I wanted to use for casting on a neck down jumper. Any suggestion please 🙂

I’ve not done this myself for a neck-down cast-on so don’t think I can help with that. There may be some alternative cast-one that feel more comfortable, like i-cord. Happy knitting 🧶

Hi Hannah I was taught 'continental knitting', and I've noticed that I nearly always have the wrong tension, according to the patterns I'm using Is there a difference in the tension between the 'English' and 'continental' styles? Thank you
@KnitWithHannah
@KnitWithHannah Жыл бұрын
It will depend for each person. Generally the tension will be the same. The tension is usually held in the fingers, so it's how you're holding the yarn that matters. Happy knitting 🧶

We all knit differently, but I’ve used the classic English style all my knitting life. Love that we can all find knitting style that works for us. Happy knitting 🧶
