I prefer the sub because it's what I watched, but I've got friends who watched dub and we compared notes. Some of the voices are very different, but they still fit the characters very well. @@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Most of the fandom has pretty lighthearted jokes about sub vs dub and manga is anime, but some people actually get very heated about it. Honestly it's almost all over on Reddit, from what I've seen. I used to go to the One Piece sub reddit because I enjoyed seeing the theories and such, but it's become a significantly worse community over time, getting to be very argumentative and toxic. The series is much more enjoyable if you avoid Reddit.

You should know that the One Piece community often has a very hard time not spoiling things. It gets worse the more excited the community is about something. In the comments to the latest episodes of the anime online, there are spoilers all over the place because the excited manga readers just. cannot. contain themselves. They always spoil things for the anime-only crowd. I'm honestly impressed with how few spoilers there are on this video given how exciting the next saga is to the community. Be careful.

To explain a little more about filler, many anime adaptations are on a weekly release schedule, but it takes longer than a week to animate an episode. So in planning they have to have the manga further ahead of them, and because there are around 3 manga chapters per episode they have a filler arc every now and then. One Piece did this until just after the Water 7 saga, but because they got a different TV time slot they changed their approach to 1 chapter per anime episode of content. This has made the anime post-water 7 suffer from serious pacing issues (though occasionally it helps to let a scene breathe more) and makes the 1100+ episodes of the anime even more daunting for newcomers. What many people do is read the manga and then just watch highlights or individual episodes of their favourite moments. I'd recommend going back and watching the handful of Loguetown episodes (48-53) for two reasons: firstly they're extremely good, especially Roger's execution scene which the music enhances massively, and secondly they contain some extra material that Oda wanted to put into the story but cut because he wanted the entry to the Grand Line to be on chapter 100. Also, while sub vs dub is an old and tiresome war within the anime world (because in the early days it was often done poorly and disrespected the material) it's particularly rough in One Piece because the first company to do dubbing for One Piece was 4kids, who heavily distorted and censored the material and this soured people on dubbed One Piece, even though the Funimation dub is not censored and is quite good imo at least at this point. Really looking forward to your thoughts on the Water 7 saga!

Fan fact about the OnePiece anime: Following Oda-sensei 's example, the anime team is very consistent with things that happen in filler episodes. For example: 1- In the LogueTown arc, there are a few filler episodes where Oda-sensei was the one doing some of the storyboards for them. In one of them, Sanji participates in a cooking competition to win a Blue fin Elephant Tuna. In a later filler episode (I can't remember if it was in the G8 filler arc or in a filler episode in the Post Enies Lobby arc) we see a picture of said fish up on a kitchen wall, explaining what it is and where it's found. 2- Commander Jonathan from the G8 filler arc, makes an appearance in a later canon episode where many up grade Marines are gathering for a meeting. These are just a few of the many times the anime is consistent in itself. Another great thing they do is sometimes implementing some of Oda-sensei 's beautiful colour spreads, mostly in the Openings and Endings. Sadly they have stopped adapting the Cover Stories, even though it seems that they have now understood their mistake. Hopefully we will get more of them in the future.

The anime does not need to be watched in its entirety, but there are many episodes that are a MUST WATCH due to the music and voice acting thoroughly enhancing the moments and action. My tip: if you read something that seems powerful in emotion or action, then find the corresponding episode and watch it.

Nakama is a word that's used a lot in the Japanese version and in the One Piece community, and it's used sometimes because it's a Japanese word that doesn't exactly have a one to one translation to English. The base word would be "friend" but it's a lot stronger than that, getting into the territory of a sort of "found family". For instance, Luffy considers all of his crew members to be nakama. It's not something you'd miss by only reading the English translations, but it's a nice extra bit of context to the relationships.

G-8 did a wonderful job immersing filler with canon elements. It’s very rare to see filler do that properly... Skypia and Water 7 stand on their own, but G-8 picks elements from both arcs and presents a story that allows the Straw Hat crew to breathe a bit. It’s very refreshing to see the crew interact and practice their trades. It’s something you start to miss as the plot thickens and there quickly becomes less time to see it. Water 7 is amazing! I’m very excited to hear your reaction to it! However, let’s not ignore the Davey Back fights! That’s a brief story arc that comes before Water 7. I love the reactions Professor Chase!!! so, I didn't realize that Hulu had completely removed the subbed version from their site. Netflix in the US does have both the subbed and dubbed versions. One of the biggest challenges with a "filler arc" is that you need to eventually sync back up with the original story, and so it is very easy to have filler arcs where the characters don't grow, the stakes don't matter, etc. I do think this arc handles things quite well - yes the ending is "oh look, we're once more falling with an octopus" but overall it does reinforce a lot of themes which it presented in a fun way.

I’m told frequently by other One Piece watchers (as I am a watcher and not a reader) that I could progress faster if I watched the dubbed form and multitasked while I do so, but I notice that I tend to struggle with paying attention if I don’t watch it with Japanese audio and English subtitles. It forces me to pay attention and actually absorb the information being presented. The few times I’ve tried watching the dub while I did something else, I ended up needing to rewind and rewind over and over because I kept tuning it out as background noise. I also struggle to read the manga when I’ve tried because there’s no audio component to keep me focused on it. I would like to read the manga and also the supplementary character novels if I can find a way to do so in a way that keeps me focused. I appreciate that you validate all ways of engaging with One Piece. 💕 Great video once again.

One of the things i love about one piece filler is that consistently it keeps characterization intact and above all it reinforces the themes of the current place in the story (or event future places) in a way that makes it feel so much less like waiting for the manga to catch up (though it’s not an entirely incorrect assessment) and more like a part of the complete story (the ice hunters arc at the beginning of the next saga, as well as this one are the shining examples of this, though i don’t think ice hunters is nearly as much of a must-watch as g8)

Great video, I always look foward to your uploads! Your takes are really fresh and sometimes even make me give a new look to aspects of a series I've read 3 times now. Thought it would be nice to add some information here for you and for those interested too in the topic of fillers. "Filler" in anime is usually a way to space-out the anime from the manga. As both have weekly releases and a regular paced anime episode adapts 2 chapter per episode, it's just a matter of time the anime catches up and runs out of material to adapt. To avoid that, the anime can either do filler or just adapt less chapters per episodes - which seems to be One Piece's preferrable methods nowadays. Each method has it's pros and cons, with the latter, the anime's pacing is severely compromised and with filler, it just makes the week-to-week experience worse, since for some months the plot won't be moving foward. The G8 Arc is said to be a great arc and it's always reccomended to readers bc it actually fits the story and does exactly what a filler should do in a nice way. At the end of the day, it's all a consequence of the way they chose to adapt these stories, Shonen were done like that back in the day. Nowadays, Shonen have adopted more of a Seasonal approach - which makes the pacing for them mostly good. By the way, some time ago it was announced that the anime would receive a remake - with modern animation, better pacing, new scenes that compliment the later parts of the series, etc. It will take a while to release, but letting you know if you're interested :)

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but you should check out the Merry Funeral scene in the anime. It’s really good in the anime, the scene is really enhanced by the voice acting and music.

Well done on finishing G8! Definitely my favorite filler EVER across all anime adaptations. Thank you for your bit on dub vs. sub, everyone is valid in their opinion of one piece consumption! And I’m very excited for you to dive into this next saga, I feel it will be an especially interesting and fun read for you considering your personal ties to the characters at hand and your understanding of them!

I wholeheartedly endorse being a manga reader only for most of it. The quality of the anime has skyrocketed recently. So I would consider watching some clips of the more recent stuff when you get there!

Hey man, I love your videos so much and just wanted to show my love with this comment. I caught up completely with the manga recently and seeing where you’re going to reach is so incredible. No spoilers but the next arc water 7 is something special as well as the arc right after that really creates a masterpiece since they are back to back

…. Unfortunately I was wrong you still got the foxy pirates to watch. Not saying it’s bad simply more the fact that it’s a “joke” arc as opposed to to the two I mentioned after the foxy pirates that is heavily pushing the narrative

Speaking of episodes to watch, and I know it's a long time coming, put a note somewhere to watch episode 1015 when you pass chapter 1000. My first time watching it made me realize how much the anime is carried by the story. That episode was noticeably better than the rest in terms of how it was directed. I'd never actively sought out people's reactions to an episode until watching that one.

i think the reason why many manga readers (myself included) love the G8 arc is BECAUSE of how how seamlessly it blends itself into the narrative oda has built. Many adaptations are not able to replicate that phenomenon which is a shame.

What a great video. I didn't watch any filler on my first watch of one piece but now that I'm rewatching with my partner Im looking to the community on what filler arcs I should get into, and I gotta say we are half way through Skypiea and this video made me really excited for G8.

17:18 The last episode of G-8 was aired on the same weekend the manga released chapter 340, that's like 1/3 into Water 7 arc, so they might have got some extra insight from Oda on what was to come. Specially when you factor in production time for the anime, putting the time the story for G-8 was completed at least a couple of months earlier.

the one thing i recommend is playing one piece music in the background while reading. i have gotten goosebumps time and time again just seeing luffy stand there in front of villain ____ while his theme bellows in the background. it REALLY draws me in deeper into the story

Netflix has all the arcs from the beginning! There is a big gab in the Netflix seasons, but you are not there yet, for now, all the seasons you are on are on Netflix as well. Subbed, I don't know if dubbed.

Very much enjoying your perspective and takes professor, thank you. I feel though, as if someone led you astray. I hope your first experience as an anime viewer of One Piece hasnt been too disappointing, as the G8 arc should have been far down the list for first experience. Please give the Water 7 amd more importantly, the Enes Lobby Arc a chance. There are very moving moments and performances well worth your time, even in the english dub. The G8 Arc is mostly famous for 2 things - being the most pallatable filler Arc, and, the Condoriano bit. I feel like the communtiy just wanted you to experience that classic OP laugh.

Thank you for the talk about sub vs dub at the beginning. It's so tiring seeing this debate and seeing so many people think we are hating on each other for preferring one version over another. Preference does not equal an attack. It's just an opinion. I prefer sub, my best friend prefers dub. The one thing we both agree on is that we can watch either one together and have a great time.

Regarding Oda not writing the filler: He tends to have a lot of contact with all the official non-manga One Piece content. Most filler in other anime is created largely without the original author, but One Piece games and filler arcs often have stories or characters that were still conceptualized by Oda himself, but fleshed out by the team making it. Which means that most One Piece filler is markedly better than that of other anime, because it's still using the writer as the original, well, writer. While other shows have the animation teams and such try to do writing, and that leads to a lot of stories that just don't feel right.
