Dead Beat was Butcher's first hardback book so Butters was put in this story partially to be able to ask questions that would help readers new to the series understand what was going on in the Dresdenverse.

The adaptation has its strengths and weaknesses. There's things changed to conform to a western sensibility and tendency towards violence. There's not a lot of it but its such a stark contrast. You see something similar from western audience where people will want a dead body to raise the stakes...which feels like they got with killing Merry.

So did Allen start One Piece with the 4kids version? Because it didn't get a Funimation dubbing until 2007. The thought of people in college being super into the 4kids dub is funny to think about. As I'm not sure how easy it was to get the show sent from Japan or to view it well on the internet in the early 2000s. Torrenting and accurate subbing wasn't available back then. Especially when One Piece wasn't popular over hear back then. I'd have similar experience with Naruto, getting wrong info for the show online because the US was so far behind in the show and the manga volumes came out later, the fan translation weren't great back them either.

Phillip, Jared is wrong 😡 you need to read the Dispossessed first. Why? Because it's the only one I have read and I loved it 😅 In all seriousness, Dispossessed is incredible, and I vehemently recommend it. not every character needs to be overpowered and i love it about strawhats, that's what make them unique i love how even though we're experiencing the king of pirates crew born we still can see humanity in every one of them usopp, nami and chopper are the coward trio for a reason and that trio are needed otherwise everyone just became badass and almost a bunch of destructive godzillas, and we loose the essence of one piece, the primary message btw people usually pictures zoro as someone edgy but he notices really well other people's feelings, just like luffy does luffy and zoro may not be the smartest in a test but they got a big heart so that's the balance in strawhats: everyone is a freak in some way, they are loyal to each other and all of them are strong in their own way which inspires us as human beings in real life you don't have to be strong like everyone else, you can be amazing with your own strenghts and still find yourself a home and a loyal family ps.: i haven't finished the video when i wrote this so i want to say that it is already really weird to hate on skypiea, and much more knowing everything that happens after considering allen said he isn't totally up to the manga, maybe he didn't get to it but skypiea is not only a funny arc but SUPER important to the narrative of one piece

I hope Allen does not Hate the LiveAction...he is passionate about the fiction and stories he follows.. In Oda's words :- The more knowledgeable you are on OnePiece, the more you will like it. I love the adaptation and I agree with most of what you said, but there are some minor issues that I have. First of all Zoro is in this adaption the worst hit straw hat, not bad, but I miss his light hearted sometimes enjoying himself tone. I know Zoro is meant to be that badass, and he is, but that is not all of him. Sanji, Nami, Luffy an Lysop were great, while Lysop had less "screen time" than he deserved. But those traits can be expandet in later seasons aswell. What was confusing to me is, that Nojiko didn't know about Namis truth, as well es the whole village, taking away from the good hearted village believing in Nami as well as the impact of her joining Arlong for the village. This change was unnessecary, it wouldn't drag on the episode times. But I can live with that. On another note, I love Buggy, he was perfect.

I’m mostly ok with the narrative changes though I don’t particularly like how Kuro or Arlong were written. Their actors were fine but they just didn’t have the menacing threat as they do in the manga. I really liked the live action and it helped me with getting my parents into the world of one piece, without having to watch 1000+ episodes or chapters, so I'm really grateful for that. My only gripes with the adaption is Zoro :( In the manga and anime he's this goofy badass that has a funny laugh but in the live action they maxed out his "badass" factor and made him into this cold sword dude instead of the essentially teenager with a dream that he is in the beginning. Also in my opinion the Zoro vs Mihawk confrontation felt really watered down, the lines didn't have the same punch as in the original and I feel like Mihawk could've talked a bit louder and clearer, and the biggest factor is that in the original the crew aren't with Zoro when he fights so all they can do is hopelessly watch as he almost dies, instead of just standing behind him in the adaptation 😭so when Zoro says his line of never losing again it just doesn't feel as good since luffy is right there with him. The other crewmates felt really good however and as you said they really nailed usopp and the actor looks like he has a lot of fun playing him, which is key ;)

My opinion on the live action is that overall it did a very good job. Luffy's actor nailed Luffy's normal energy, but was a bit lackluster when Luffy get's serious. Some of the plot changes I think were unnecessary or even damaging, but overall were minor. While I didn't hate the Garp B-plot, I'd have rather that time had gone to Nami's village, so they could have given that more depth. Maybe have Nami's sister be the supportive sister she was in the manga instead of the angry and betrayed one she was in the live action. I was also disappointed that everything took place indoors. It makes the world itself feel much smaller, and less adventurous. My biggest issue was with the direction of the scene with luffy passing the hat to nami. I think Nami's actress nailed it, but I think the direction for Luffy lacked the spirit. Aiming for drama more than comforting Nami. Luffy's shouting to the sky that 'Of course' he'd help her, just felt awkward as well. No sky involved, just a weird pose. Now I'm going to watch the video.

After you have reached Fishman Island in the manga, I'd love to hear an addendum with your opinion on the live action. The live action added some details that weren't in the original Arlong Park arc that beef up the foundation of Fishman Island whenever they end up covering that, and I'm really impressed by the way they did so. Oda probably didn't have more than a vague idea of Fishman Island at the time he wrote Arlong Park, assuming it was even on his horizon as an arc / place to visit at all. In regards to the rest of the adaptation, I think they did well except on a couple of things. For one, Usopp fails to shine in his own arc, and the kiss doesn't do much to help with that. Second, there's Nami's villagers which were made too irrelevant and Nojiko who was outright antagonistic, which didn't suit her given that she was always the hidden strength supporting Nami from behind. These changes for me lessened the impact of the 'help me' since her attachment to the villagers is hard to empathize with. The Garp B-plot was confusing to me. Garp waffled endlessly without feeling like he made progress (several episodes of 'we catch them for real this time') and his outbursts of anger while wrecking a room felt like a weird take for me personally. But I guess it beats him walking through walls...
