Thanks a million for this lesson! I learned a lot of new phrasal verbs I am going to try to make some example sentences: The mother flipped out when she arrived at home and saw the mess the children had made I flipped out when I saw that my dog had destroyed my slippers I took off my shoes when I arrived at home We saw the plane took off. She took off without telling anyone. I took off some days of work and went to Hawaii. Many online businesses took off during the pandemic I bumped into my high school friend at the groceries shop I bumped into my friend and grabbed a coffee. I tracked down my keys after looking for them everywhere. The cops tracked down the thieves and send them to court. I screw up the cake by mixing up salt and sugar I screwed up at work and therefore I got fired Thanks again for your huge help! 😄

Well done, Nicole! You've made up great and witty examples, we loved it! And your work will help us to clarify the nuances in the use of the phrasal verb "to track down". We gave the explanation: to find someone or something after a difficult or long search. This explanation expresses the general point, but unfortunately misses the nuances. In your example with keys ("I tracked down my keys after looking for them everywhere"), there is technically no mistake, but a native speaker will not use the verb "track down" in this case. Because the keys do not leave any traces or footprints etc. by which they can be tracked. Unless the keys were attached to some kind of electronic device. This phrasal verb is often used in the context of searching for people. We chose a picture of a detective to illustrate the essence, but with the explanation of the meaning, we were not precise enough. These definitions will more fully explain the nuances: to track down - to find someone or something by searching or looking for information in several different places \ to find someone or something by tracking or pursuing And here are some examples of the use of this phrasal verb in the context of a search for objects: - We tracked down this paper he wrote six years ago - I tracked down the address, and you should be thanking me for this - You tracked down my cell phone and you couldn't remember my name! - We already tracked down the $50,000 that he paid you - I tracked down his birth certificate - This is a recipe for an elixir that Amelia tracked down - He rebuilt it entirely from pieces he tracked down on the Internet - We tracked down your stolen car - Skye tracked down an invoice from one of his shell companies - I think I may have tracked down another receipt - And we also tracked down the van that was used in the robbery - She tracked down the shop that sold the dart - Out of curiosity, I tracked down the magazine it was printed in - Bailey tracked down Elena Tull's purchase history - We tracked down that web site that sold the costumes We hope this was helpful, and thanks for being active Nicole!

@@EnglishinContext Hi again. Thank you SOO much for the thorough explanation about the phrasal verb "track down". Now I understand why the example I made was more or less incorrect. You couldn't have explained it better!! The thieves tracked down the bank account password of the man. I tracked down my dog by following his footprints. Thanks again for the correction! Very much appreciated :)
