The phrasal verbs are versatile. Some can vary considerably in meaning. "Come on! Go to her party, She won't come on to you. You're safe!" "Hey, what's going down, bro?" asked Charles. "I'm trying to write a sentence that makes sense," his brother replied. We can also see the suffix change but the meaning stay the same: I can show up without a problem, but my friend rarely shows up, and he is not alone. I've shown up for these meetings on a regular basis, but after I showed up last time, I decided I will be showing up no more. If we can't beat the no-shows, then why not just join them.

Thanks for sharing more examples. Yes, I decided not to add on additional definitions of "come one." The list was already getting long, but coming on to someone is a useful meaning to know. It will be used in movies, fiction, and conversation among adults. I think the versatility of these common phrasal verbs is something that can be very overwhelming for learnings, at least initially. Hopefully, there was enough review in the lesson to help learners master the most common meanings.

Hello Jennifer! Nice to see you! Thanks a ton for the lesson! I was able to pass your tests this time. I liked a new word for me: no-show! My examples: He didn't show up. I think he is just late. Come on! There are a lot of unusual things ahead. Adventures are waiting for us. He's smart. Nevertheless, unfortunately, he often tries to show people up. Yesterday, I went down by the river to see the sunset.

Thank you for continuing to study with me each week. Good practice! 😃 I'd remove "nevertheless." It's not necessary: He's smart, but unfortunately, he often tries to show people up.

Top the morning for you. I don't know how you are able to speak such a slow form. Good job. Nevertheless, I think these lessons are designed to watch over and over because all of them have different meanings so three finally will become twenty-five.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I slow down when I want to be sure I'm clear to my listeners. Fast doesn't always mean better. Many speakers lose control of their articulation when they rush. I like to vary my rate of speech. As for the multiple meanings, this is one reason why I limit these lessons to three phrasal verbs. I also want to include review. Thanks for watching!

Really interesting. Thank you so much. I've got one question though, could "come on" mean something similar to "pop up"? From time to time I hear the phrase "pop up" when we are using our phones, as in "notifications pop up all the time on my phone" or "ads pop up on this website a lot". Would it be correct to put "come on" instead of "pop up" in those examples? Thanks in advance 😊
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Information pops up: ads pop up, a message pops up. In other words, they appear. Lights come on. In other words, they start working. So, "come on" can mean start working or start happening, like a headache. Try to associate nouns with these phrasal verbs: messages, texts, ads >> pop up You can search for "pop up" on YouGlish and see various uses, many of which are related to the Internet and social media. youglish.com/pronounce/pop%20up/english/us? lights, a headache, pain, symptoms You can Google "came on suddenly" and see the many different uses, but mostly all within the context of medical problems.

Thanks for watching. Yes, here's a related phrasal verb. Do you remember the clip with the teenage girl on the phone? She says, "He didn't show up." That means her date didn't arrive as promised. (How awful, right?) In other words, she got stood up. He stood her up. They arranged a meeting time and place, but then he didn't come. www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/stand-up

are these common phrasal verbs in usa ? are they different from a state to another ?
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, these phrasal verbs are common in the USA. I'm basing my lessons on formal research done to determine the 150 most commonly used phrasal verbs in American English (speaking and academic writing). See video description for full credit. I sometimes add other meanings not on the list, but then they align with what is presented in American English dictionaries. I wouldn't say there's a lot of variation from state to state, more like from generation to generation.
