Yes, it's possible to say that watching English language videos on KZfaq takes up most of your time. But note that "takes up a lot of my time" may suggest that you wish it didn't use so much of your free time. Instead, you could say, "I spend most of my time watching English lessons on KZfaq."

My wife always looked down on cooking. (still does!) . She looks up to my mother who is good cook. Always on the look out for a good cook , i tried to look up the perfect one, no find so I looked mithin myslf. and found that I too could cook. . My mother taught me not to fight or quarrel with the dough while kneading it for bread making. "Give it time and love, "she instructed. . Now, I am a good cook, and wife looks up to me (only at when its meal times when she's hungry) Cheers. Bon appetit.

Glad you gained skill in cooking. Sounds like your cooking is a way to your wife's heart! Good use of LOOK DOWN ON, LOOK OUT FOR, LOOK UP. I think it's natural to look up to a parent, but it's less common to look up to your spouse. You could say, "Now that I'm a good cook, my wife looks to me when she's hungry. She counts on me to prepare a good meal every day." Watch the punctuation here: "Give it time and love," she instructed. What a lovely memory you have! It's sweet to remember your mother's instructions. Thank you for sharing, Arun.

@@Englishwithjennifer i smile as i read your repartee.. I used to look down on cooking till my mother taught to love the flour and knead it with love and the v right amount of water at defined intervals. . If you get the dough nice and soft, rolling it out is easy.. The rest of the cooking is almost automatic.. In the event, my mother is no more, she died four years ago. We have a house keeper, she does the cooking and general house care. But I have to coach her on the how part of cooking. (She is good learner but refuses to follow the rules of cooking. Go easy on the housekeeper. I don't know many people who can make biscuits from scratch. :) I've done it, but in recent years I find it more convenient to buy the prepared dough. It saves me time. Throw the stone-hard biscuits out for the chickens or other birds. Thanks for the kind wishes. Take care!

@@Englishwithjennifer normally, i smile at your replies, this time round, you made me laugh.! Your english lessons have improved my maatery over the language. After these exposures, i am reading fast as i look for the subject and object and imagine the rest text in the not so important paragraohs. Similarly, my writing skills are better now.. Patience is something that we men lack, only good at talking. Just watching you piece together complex subjects bit by bit, week after week, and year after year, without money, at the cost of family life, is inspiring. This is a super lesson. Turn around and turnaround are interesting ones. Every time you turn around, I fall apart. (I got the idea from the song Total Eclipse of the Heart,) Every time I go to that restaurant, I am served by new people. They clearly have a frequent turnaround of staff. In fact, I recently learned that their longevity award was one of the easiest to win. The lady who currently holds the record did so by lasting a full fortnight!
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 2 жыл бұрын
Love that song! Hmm. In American English, we'd talk about the turnover of staff. A company with poor work environment would have a high turnover. But otherwise, that's a good example. At a restaurant with a high turnover, you'd notice new servers all the time: Every time I go to that restaurant, I am served by new people.
@stunninglad1
@stunninglad1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Englishwithjennifer I got that one wrong. It is indeed a "high turnover of staff." If the restaurant transformed the way it looked after its staff, one could say, "What a turnaround that was." In fact, "turnaround" isn't used that often. I suppose a restaurant owner could say, "The turnaround in business practices encouraged staff to stay."

Yes, you can always turn things around when it comes to language learning. It starts with small habits. One of them is to start writing more comments."

Hi Jennifer. It's no hard to observe so many social groups that are frequently LOOKED DOWN by the rest of the society. It's no easy to TURN this situation AROUND. But I still haven't TAKEN activist groups UP ON becoming an 'active woke-like person', because, unfortunately, I witness much discrimation and intolerance even between people who claim to be part of an oppressed minority. Thank you for the lesson.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Thiago. I think, sadly, it's in the human nature to judge and compare. There will always be those who feel superior and therefore look down on others. I agree that even within groups or organizations whose goal is to protect the interests of certain people there can be disagreement, lack of respect, and lack of tolerance. How to turn this all around? I don't know either. I suppose we just do our best as individuals not to contribute to the problem and practice tolerance and respect for all. Take care! Correction: groups that are frequently looked down on by What you wrote is fine, but here's an alternative: I still haven't taken any activist groups up on the offer to join them and become "woke"

present participle is used in different ways and I understand most of them even by doing revision but it seems that some of them I still don't understand what they describe like these 1: Delayed by the train, John couldn't accompany us. 2: Advised by his teacher, John started to behave properly. 3: Punished by his mother, the boy refused to eat his dinner. 4: encouraged by his success, the swimmer he entered a competition. 5: By practising every day, she passed her driving test.
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer Жыл бұрын
See my lesson on reducing adverb clauses. Those adverb clauses have been reduced to past participles, which are passive in nature. 1: Because John was delayed by the train, he couldn't accompany us. 2: Because (as/since) John was advised by his teacher, he started to behave properly. 3: Because (as/since) the boy was punished by his mother, he refused to eat his dinner. 4: Because (as/since) the swimmer was encouraged by his success, he entered a new competition. This is a prepositional phrase: by doing what? By + (ing) It functions like an adverb because it answers the question HOW? It's cause-effect. Because she practiced every day, she passed her driving test. 5: By practising every day, she passed her driving test.

Azad Essa discusses some of the human rights violations taking place in Kashmir. subject = Azad Essa verb = discusses object = human rights (whole object: some of the human rights violations taking place in Kashmir) >> "The phrase "human rights" is further modified by a reduced adjective clause. Which human rights? The ones that are taking place in Kashmir. It was reduced to a participial phrase: taking place in Kashmir. The adjective clause can be seen as an object complement in this sentence.

Hi Jennifer! Here are some examples! The new minister has promised to turn things around on the economic front. Good teachers like Jennifer do turn things around for their learners. Every time I turn around there is something great on offer from Jennifer. Let's take up this issue with our boss tomorrow. My desktop computer was taking up so much space, so I decided to buy a laptop. I don't feel like talking to him anymore because he seems to be looking down on people who are less fortunate. Please check my grammar! Thanks! Stay safe!
