Hi Jennifer, my name is Vitor and I'm from Brazil. Next year is my last in high school. I really enjoy learning a foreing language, my favorite is English but I pretend to learn others in the future. I'm really foucused on improve my english skills because I want to live abroad. I started to learn english one year ago but I had a little contact with english from a very young age, that helps me a lot, so when I started to learn I had a lot of vocabulary. I'm very curious and I've found many english teachers on youtube, one of them was you, I particularly enjoyed your method and how you speak english and I pretend to keep watching your channel. I really tried to write on the best manner I could, and please evaluate how my english is.

Hi Jennifer, your videos on Conditionals were great and your explanations were very clear. The use of "would" in the first conditional is also often heard especially in daily spoken English. The if-clause is in the present tense and the main clause in the past tense. E.g.: - If you work hard, you would get promoted. [1] What's the difference between using "would" and "will" in the first conditional ? [2] Is there an implicit nuance in the speaker's mind when using "would" in this first conditional? I'd highly appreciate if you would give me your detailed explanation. Best regards, Melvin

1st (likely future) >> WILL: If it rains, we'll have the party indoors. 2nd (imaginary future/present) >> WOULD: If it rained, we would have the party indoors. 3rd (imaginary past) >> WOULD HAVE + pp: If it had rained, we would have had the party indoors, but thankfully, the weather was beautiful. @@EnglishwithjenniferHi Jennifer, many thanks for your prompt reply. I've seen with much interest all your video series about the Conditionals, they were great. I understand very clearly how to use the 0,1st, 2nd, 3rd and the mixed Conditionals of the 2nd and 3rd explained in your videos. Unfortunately, you didn't explain the mixed structure of the 1st and 2nd Conditionals, like : "If it rains, we would have the party indoors". This kind of structure (1st and 2nd) is often heard and used in daily spoken English, but I still don't understand what implicit nuances the speaker has in mind when using "would" instead of "will" in the 1st the conditional. How can a possible/likely if-clause be mixed with an imaginary result clause? I would highly appreciate if you would explain to me clearly what it implies when using "would" in the first conditional. Best regards, Melvin

Hello, Jennifer! I would be grateful, if you told me about how to use the Mixed conditionals in reported speech (Unfortunately, I haven't found any information about the Mixed conditionals in reported speech on the Internet). For instance, how to put this sentence: He said: "If I had studied better last year, I would be a doctor now" in indirect speech? And this one: He said: "If I were richer, I would have bought that car yesterday". Many thanks in advance!

Hi. Here's an older video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNmVdJN2yp3Mm4k.html Basically, if the conditional is unreal, you can't change the verbs. If something is still true as you report it, you can choose not to shift. There's some variation.

Hi, Jennifer, thank you for your excellent video, and thank you for listing my name out in the video, though my answer was incorrect for the questions of last week. If I had studied English hard in my student hood, maybe I could be fluent at English reading, writing and speaking now, at least at reading and writing. Bonus question: a. If I don’t get at least 7 hours of sleep, I won’t be able to stay focused during the day. (Maybe I need more sleeping time in my real life.) b. If I can’t sleep in till eight o’clock, I will have to take a nap. ( It’s the time on my way to office at eight o’clock in the morning on every working day.)

Mam we use simple past in conditional sentece ( in unreal conditional for preset /future) . But I got conufed about was/were .I mean in that case what should we use? I was or I were because according to rule we should use past simple , so shouldn't it be was, but why do some people use l were in unreal conditional for future /present .
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 2 жыл бұрын
"Were" is the subjunctive form (for all subjects) that we use in unreal conditionals and hypothetical statements: If I were you... I wish you were here. Compare it to the unreal past: If I had been there yesterday... I wish I had been there.

Hi, Jennifer. I just have two questions. First, How come we cannot change the verb tense in real conditionals when it remains true in the time of speaking? Can you explain that to me with some exemples? Second, If you were not a teacher, What would you be?
@Englishwithjennifer
@Englishwithjennifer 4 жыл бұрын
Real conditionals in the present stay in the present. Any future time clause uses the present tense, and then the main clause can use a future verb form: 1. When I see you, I'll show you the photos. (future plan) 2. If I see you, I'll show you the photos. (future possibility) 3. When we get together, we always have a good time. (true all the time) If I weren't an online English teacher, I would probably be doing some kind of work with children. I did some volunteer work with Russian orphans in the past. I found it very rewarding.

Mixed conditional ; 1. If you had taken my advice, you would not have any problems (now) 2. If she had taken reasonable precautions, she would not be pregnant (now) 3. If she had gone to University, she might have a better job. 4. If we had won the competition, we would be going to visit Jennifer next week. Restate using if: 1) If I don’t get at least 7 hours of sleep, I can’t stay focused during the day. 2) I have to take a nap if I cannot sleep in till 8

Hi. That's a real or likely conditionals about the future. The if-clause uses the present, but it refers to the future. The result clause uses "will" to refer to the probably result.

Task:Mixed Conditional : If I had studied abroad, I might be working in another country.Bonus Task: 1.- If I don't get at least 7 hours of sleep,, I can't stay focused during the day. 2.- I have to take a nap if I can't sleep in till 8.In my case, both statements aren' t true. Almost never I take a nap and I always take at least eight hours of sleep to stay focused all day.

Sorry for being late, Jennifer. I haven't got much time this week, but it's better late than never, right? Task: • If I hadn't studied English at the high school, I probably might not be able to communicate with you right now. Bonus task: a) unless I get at least 7 hours of sleep, I can't stay focused during the day. ➡ If I don't get at least 7 hours of sleep, I can't stay focused during the day. b) I have to take a nap unless I can sleep in till 8.➡ If I don't sleep in till 8, I have to take a nap.

It's good to practice. :) Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter. Most names of countries don't require an article. Corrections/suggestions: A) If we go to France, we will earn a lot of money. B) If we went to France, we would use Euros (pay with Euros, earn Euros, etc.) C) Were I you, I would buy a (car, yacht, house, TV, etc.) D) Should there be an emergency in the theater, please alert the staff immediately. (Inverted conditionals with "should" are formal. It's better to change this to a formal situation.) E) If Jennifer had a visa to Turkey, she would visit Mount Nemrut.
