I have found a sturdy microcrystaline quartz jasp-agate makes the best picks and you can make them even thiner. I find it is worth it to break test the material before final shaping too. Then you find the flaws before someone potentially gets cut on a sharp break.

Trying to break them ahead of time is a good idea. Thanks.

Hey, Rob ✌️. Thanks a lot, now I need a laser😊. I taught myself the gimp photo manipulation program, and I love playing around with colors and designs, so when I saw your screen with all those numbered colors at the bottom, I was wondering if those are colors you can etch with 🤔. So, can you?😊 As always, thank you for sharing and showing. ✌️👍
@MichiganRocks7 ай бұрын
No, those are layers in the program. So each color is for a different cutting speed and power. That's how I was able to do the oval in one pass and then switch that off to do the flower after.
@CharlieOkeson7 ай бұрын
@@MichiganRocks ahh, very cool 😎 👌

Try warming your rocks just a bit so the heat isn’t such a shock when the lazer hits, who knows it might sharpen the melted edge of the image too. 🤷♀️
@MichiganRocks7 ай бұрын
Are you just speculating about this, or is it something you've tried? I ask because I'm not sure how to heat them and keep them hot while they engrave. What you say makes sense though.
@davidhile53637 ай бұрын
That kind of makes sense. When welders weld cast iron they preheat it first.

Can you change the color, or is it just based on the rock?

It's just on a rock by rock basis. So far I have only seen black and white, but I haven't tried too many rocks. I think epidote etched black.
@NeroKosonen7 ай бұрын
@@MichiganRocks, so the white color isn't from the toothpaste, but from the lazer?

@nhrockaholic60387 ай бұрын
Is the engraving white because of the toothpaste? Did you choose white? Or can it be any color? Thanks
