I stopped riding bicycles on my 16th birthday when i got a Yamaha FS1E 50cc moped. I have ridden motorcycles my whole adult life, now 62. Aged 59 i rediscovered the joys of bicycles (not e-bikes) and absolutely love the things again, riding approx 400kms pm. And building them from scratch just like custom motorcycles. Love 'em. Big kid again.

I have a Trail Mountain bike (non eMTB) and always get overtaken by old people on the ebikes, great to see them out exercising/commuting though how I wish it was an eMTB

I have knee issues from road impacts and my left hip is Fiiiied, but a new procedure of injecting a Stem reagent into the joint isn't far off, and I'd prefer that to having a defective hip replacement surgery which would guarantee nothing but the potential for harm.

In November 2022, i bought my first E-bike and i really like it. Is it as fun as my motorcycle ? Hell no. But, it is 2 wheels, with power, so there's that. I have bad knees, and in my mid 60's, so an E- bike is better for me, especially on any hills.

Looks capable enough to be very useful in a lot of different situations, and if a proper biker like yourself enjoyed it I'd say that's a pretty good endorsement.

This electric pushie, is all very well, but if you both go 'grey nomad', what happens to your beloved Ducati? I guess if it's a question of how much caravan can you get with a Ducati, then you must do what you need to. My view on electric bikes, is conditional, I suppose. For pootleing around, it seems fine, without taking the cost into consideration. Otherwise, for me, I'm of a mind of going all in on a motorcycle, or a car for carrying people and shopping etc. I used to do the shopping with a large backpack, filling it with the weekly shop, and then strapping it to the seat behind me. I'm fairly certain the volume of my pack was greater than all the luggage in the world? For a large shop at least. Horses for courses, mate, I think. Our uses, purpose and needs vary for our own circumstances very widely though. 😆 When my kids were teens, their seats had to be right down at the stop, so sitting down, their knees rose above their heads, so when I expounded on my mechanical knowledge, on the mechanical advantage of a seat height far higher, they not only ignored me, but tried to make me feel like a grade 'A' loser, apparently fashion wins against mechanical advantage? Once I got a motorbike, the childish things like pushies, were left far behind, and I have only more recently used them for short trips for the 18 X advantage over walking. Remember when The Chinese learned this? Only to forget once cars became available, so now they have permanent London pea soup fog. That was/is responsible for 10s or 100s of thousands of deaths from heart and lung damage. Hey, we made this world in our own image, with all of our flaws and weaknesses instantiated within it. I remain not specifically a petrol head, but I am definitely an ICE man, the advent of H₂ technologies are growing apace, with amazing improvements in technology practically weekly. I have considered H₂ to be our future fuel, since my youth in the early 60s, and remain convinced that battery technology is ultimately a dead end. Anything that has an effect on a vehicle's mass to such an extent becomes an accident hazard. A small 1.5 tonne car is taking things a bit far, pushing inertia to an extreme. Whereas a H₂ vehicle has carbon fibre tanks containing a liquified gas, Less space and less weight are already a noticeable improvement over batteries and petrol. As H₂ holds a higher energy density than petrol or batteries. The option of using electric engines can also apply, using H₂ fuel cells, while again giving a quick refilling time and far greater range. H₂ is likely to become the chosen alternative, especially in big countries like Australia and America, where good are shipped via trucks or diesel trains. Hydrogen is their only solution, which would push Europe to the front of the queue as well. Long distance freight carriers need regular refuelling and not overnight charging. With H₂ meeting these needs completely. Anybody would think I was on the board of a hydrogen company, but I'm not, just a long time ardent supporter of future-proof technologies.
