A Labor of love, David takes us into our nursery trial areas and describes how white and silver gardens provide an air of elegance, simplicity, ease and tranquility to provide a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern-day life☺️
👏 How they provide a valuable "pressure valve" to relax and recharge, and become a calming, restorative sanctuary, a release away from hectic schedules and recurring stress.
💮 He explains how Icy white flowers bring freshness, sophistication into our lives, and how they help to provide the illusion of cooler, soothing temperatures in summer and reflect the dwindling evening light to extend our gardening pleasure well into dusk and beyond.
🏡 Best of all, David shares his experience and knowledge to provide a comprehensive list of over 35 tried and tested, top performing garden selections that are sure to help you create your own little oasis of pleasure and tranquility.

Gorgeous! A white garden is especially breathtaking. The Hydrangea selection these days is phenomenal. You can't go wrong with any of them. Sadly, silver perennial plants here in wet gloomy Zone 5b don't last for more than a couple of years, even in raised beds. Silver and white is so serene and meditative. LONGING for Spring. OH, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens in late spring is on my bucket list. Thanks for another video that made me smile. Love the longer video.

Thanks. It is great to hear you found this enjoyable. There's always so much to try to mention and include, that it often takes a little longer.... And of course, it has absolutely nothing to do with a natural passion for plants or "kissing the blarney stone" either!!!! We understand about how you've found some silvery plants don't like your rainy, cold, "gloomy" conditions. Several hail originally from Mediterranean climes, so it is tough to get them to stick around. BUT thankfully😉👏😁, some like the Willow (Salix 'Iceberg Alley') that we feature in this video, are derived from a species (Salix candida) that comes from cold, wet, northern parts of the US and Canada, so it should positively thrive in your 5b garden! Here's a link to another of our videos kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eOCgiLSEmK_WcXk.html that will explain a lot more detail about its exciting features and origins. 😉👍

I have my front yard in white - pink - purple combo: arched 14 annabelle hydrangeas for live hedge, two liliac trees in the background, bearded irises, alliums, tree vanilla-strawberry hydrangea and annual white or purple baskets. It looks serene, elegant and beautiful.

Wow, that's FANTASTIC! Take your time, do your research, call in and visit some of the many garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ that stock the plants (in flower and at their peak). Then make your own discerning selections, and in no time (we are sure), you'll be able to enjoy some of the many pleasures of having a gorgeous white, or white and silver garden, that we hope will bring you and your family many years of enchanting pleasure. Can we suggest that you go back and replay the video a couple of times again! Especially the later parts, because there's actually more than 37 outstanding (top performing) varieties that we've tested and trialed over the years, ones that we know do very well here in this region. Then scroll through the rest of our channel, because there's plenty of other good plants featured, that we couldn't include in this video because of duration, its already too long for most folk. And of course (if you haven't already), consider subscribing to our channel, because there's more videos (with even more good plants) coming! Thanks for sharing this exciting news!

Thank you, it is our pleasure. The nice thing about garden plants is that they don't all have to be purchased at the same time! So compiling your wish list, and gradually whittling down the ones that appeal most as time goes on is what most of us do. It is good to subtly (and considerately) share it with loved ones and friends too! So that when holiday periods, birthdays, anniversaries etc. come around, they know what gifts to get. I know that often one of my biggest dilemmas is trying to decide, what to get someone? So having someone put together a list of things that they really want is really helpful.

Can anyone answer why it is that in England there are so many panical hydrangeas are not available in the UK??
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Thanks for an interesting question. Like a lot of things in life, the reasons (we believe) are probably many and varied. It is interesting that here in the US, Panicle Hydrangeas have really caught on, and captured the imagination of the everyday home owners. Whereas in the UK (and several other European countries), this hasn't happened to the same extent! This is a little incomprehensible when we consider that British and other Europeans generally, are more "garden orientated", and the first real appreciation of their beautiful qualities happened in Belgium (with the de Belders), and then spread to England, the Netherlands and France. It may be that US gardeners are "ahead of the curve" with this strong (and growing) trend, one that still has to "take off" with their popularity blossoming in Britain and other European countries. On my UK travels in recent years, I think I am seeing more Panicle Hydrangeas turn up in garden centers, nurseries and plantings, and now with shorter, more compact, and earlier flowering selections that have stiff sturdy, wind resistant stems that can support the big heavy, rain sodden heads, you'd think that it is only a matter of time until their universal adoration explodes. Especially with your cooler summer nights and the probably that the pink and red coloring would be even more impressive in your climate. That brings me to my final thought, and that is that I suspect it is related to the differences in our respective climates. In our colder winters and hotter summers, the panicles excel and perform reliably well, almost everywhere. So that as people drive around here in steamy, hot summer days, and see these gleaming (cooling) icy white flowers standing out amongst the often drought challenged landscapes, they recognize that these plants are something that they want to have around their home too! In contrast, in your milder, lush and cooler summers, there's wider selection of plants and colors to view, so the panicles may not stand out as much, especially since their prevalence is not (yet) as often encountered. For our own part, it's exciting to be involved in trialing, picking out and telling people about the BEST NEW selections, then watching them flourish and bring enrichment and pleasure into the lives of everyday Americans. We can only hope (and watch with interest) to see if the Brits and other European home owners will want to enjoy the largely undiscovered attributes of these easy to grow and very beautiful garden shrubs. Thanks again for your interesting query.

Thank you. As you can see, we are very fond of white and silvery plants too. I dare say, several of them should be fine with you, but since we don't have any direct experience in your region, we would suggest that you check with local garden center experts. They will know exactly and probably be able to show you, the ones that thrive best.

Hi David, I have some hydrangea paniculata, I live in brisbane australia and most days it gets to 90deg i have found some of the white petals turn light brown as if they are burning what should i do. Plus i want to try taking cuttings of these plants how do i do it. Best Regards Patricia

Thanks for your question. I have never been to "Aussie land" so a good local expert at some of your best local garden centers will probably be more familiar with your conditions and ways to guide you. Here in the US, it is natural to see older florets on several varieties take on beige and brown shades, and some will become nicely burnished which can be quite ornamental. It depends a lot on the conditions and genetic background of individual selections, and that's why we do a lot of trialing and testing to compare how they all perform. To help we make sure to incorporate plenty of organic matter at planting time, mulch to conserve soil moisture, and maybe do some watering at their bases too, when things get hot and dry. Also, finding a spot with a little afternoon dappled or partial shade protection might help prevent the florets "frying" too. FYI, here's a link to another of the videos here on this channel that will help you see how to take cuttings: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pp-BftmiuLbQY6M.htmlsi=YgLiwRecc8jcDFqR. I am working here with a perennial but the principle for these hydrangeas is the same. I would just caution you that several several selections (especially the newer ones) are protected, so it is illegal to propagate them without permission from the introducer. We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find the information as well.

Love the video! I heavily pruned my hydrangea, “The Swan” 2 years ago, and am afraid I may have ruined them. I know they are slow growing, and they used to be 5 ft. Tall, but after 2 years, their branches are growing in such a twisted way, they seem compromised in some way…what should I do? Start over with new ones?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
That sounds strange, and it sounds like something else is going on beside the heavy pruning! That should not have effected them that way. The Swan is a nice (now older) variety and in its day was quite popular. As you've probably noticed in the video and elsewhere on this channel, during the last few years there's been an explosion of exciting, new selections, so maybe it is time to start doing your research here on this channel and picking out some new ones that appeal to your situation. We are pleased to tell you that there are several garden centers that carry our plants within striking distance of Sayreville. Here's a link that will show you where they are all located: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ Later on this spring (as the weather improves), they will start stocking them, and then as early summer, and the rest of the gardening year unfolds, this will accelerate with regular weekly arrivals. So, it pays to stop in frequently because there will be new, nursery fresh, premium sized plants on display all the time.
