Re Praetorius' song, this performance thereof, and the message conveyed in words and music, I can only say: there is great beauty here, moving in its simplicity and depth..

Just delightful. I watched 'The Time Traveler's Wife' and it brought back childhood memories, so looked this up. Great performance.

@EnsembleDEUM Though I do not doubt alternative versions on the internet, the line with 'wie' is lexically correct-- meaning "(just) like the ancients sang to us", whereas 'als' would mean "while' the ancients sang to us". A truly great performance, regardless!

One of the best performances of this I've ever heard. Very well done...

@heros2110 There are two very different versions of the verses. They're singing the version most used in Catholic liturgy, using "Als" and a new 3rd strophe not used in Lutheran liturgy,

This is still my favourite rendering. I have listened to this piece so many times..Relieved that you are still going, Ensemble DEUM, from recent replies, . You've helped me a lot. Best wishes.

Beautiful, truly beautiful! Our little Christmas choir sings this too, and we aspire to this level, but haven't quite reached it yet... :-) I didn't recognize the third verse; that was in Latin, right? I couldn't find it on the internet. But it sure beats ending with "Sünd und Tod"! :-) Thanks again!

thanks ;-) in internet there are a lot of sites reporting "Als uns die Alten sungen"... there could be two different versions...

Until at least to the beginning of the 19th century "als" and "wie" were used more often than not interchanged compared to today's standard German. So, "als" is most likely in the original text, and "wie" is a modernisation.

Good, somewhat uncertain in some attacks (in particular in the beginning of the italian strophe) and I didn't like all the finals, which are not always perfectly timed. So, I will not give you 10 out of 10, but "only" 9 out of 10: the voices are very very good, well round and perfectly fit for this kind of music, and the ensemble is simply charming. Very well done.

"als uns die Alten sungen" is old German, probably the original version.

In the last part we sing the lyrics in italian language: "È nato il Salvatore, Dio ce lo donò. Egli è nato in mezzo a noi: Gesù, Signore nostro, noi crederemo in te."

@angedoux14 жыл бұрын

The Savior was born, God gave us him. He was born from Mary. she brought him to us. He was born between us Jesus, our Lord, we will trust in you. (in the song they doesn't say "egli" et the beginning of the 6th line)
