To be honest, I think this is one area the reboot lost an important aspect of the original series. It's dramatic and emotional and tense and all of that, top notch fur sure! But nobody feels even the slightest bit conflicted over the conflict between Adama and Cain. BSG original Adama: Wow! Now we have two battlestars. Now we can more effectively defend the fleet! BSG original Cain: Wow! Now we have two battlestars. We can finally take the fight to the Cylons and stop all these wasteful defensive battles. BSG reboot Cain: I'm a monster. BSG reboot Adama: You are a monster. Because Helena Cain and the rest of the Pegasus are the 100% absolute worst, it's so easy to tell them to F&*% all the way off. There's more anger, but less dramatic tension.

You don't frak with Adama. I love that about him. Because it's not enough to survive; you must be worthy of survival. The crew of the Pegasus have given up what makes them human - they are no longer worthy. Being human isn't a matter of flesh, but a matter of principles and values. That's what Adama has come to realise, and what he has sworn to defend.

My take on why this arc is in the show is to show the two different paths that Adama and crew could have chosen to take. It's definitely the case that people can be turned into monsters like this due to circumstance and social pressure. See, for example, the Stanford Prison Experiment. The Milgram Experiment may also be relevant, here. It doesn't help that the Pegasus crew had very different interactions with cylons than the Galactica crew (and, especially, the audience) did. Not only did they not see them as having the kind of emotional inner lives we ascribe to anyone we consider "people," these not-actually-people had just killed the vast majority of the human race. And that wouldn't be abstract to them, it would include almost everyone they'd ever known who wasn't on the ship with them. Combine that with a Stanford Prison Experiment kind of situation, and a rigid power structure headed by someone like Cain, and you have a recipe for all manner of atrocities. Heck, it wasn't all that long ago that various of the characters we love on Galactica would casually talk about putting a cylon out the airlock. "Cylons are people, too" is a fairly recent discovery for the majority of the fleet.

As much as having to be caretakers to the civilian fleet and dealing with Roslin was a pain in their necks, this episode was a good showing of why taking on that role was good for the Galactica crew. It forced them to continually face and hold onto their humanity. The Pegasus crew became hellriders, out for vengeance after the fall of the colonies, and they lost/suppressed their humanity because all they had left to work with was their rage and despair. If the Galactica didn't have the civvie fleet to look after, I can very easily see them going down the same dark paths. Also, Bear McCreary continues to be an absolute master at his trade. "Prelude to War" (the song playing over the end "I'm getting my men" sequence) continues to be one of my all time favorite pieces of music.

If you’re curious about the extended scenes, you can google Extended Scenes Pegasus and there should be a wiki article that lists them in chronological order. This is always a very intense episode for me to revisit. Personally, I appreciated that the extended version fully went there and forced viewers to confront the realities and damage done when you dehumanize your “enemy”, like Paula was saying. At the same time, I think when you know these experiences firsthand, there’s no need to put yourself through the distress of that (needless) reminder. As always, I appreciate your videos very much. For another "oh yeah" moment - Cain defines herself as a "flag officer on detached service during a time of war" to justify executing Tyrol and Helo. Except when she met up with the president and colonial government she is NO LONGER on 'detached service'. She is back with civilian authority. It's the most blatant sign yet that she doesn't recognise Roslin as president, despite wanting to use the chain of command to dominate Adama.
@Philistine47

21:00 To paraphrase what Apollo said to Commander Adama and President Roslin way back in "Bastille Day": "If we're just throwing out all the rules, then _you're_ not the President, and _you're_ not a commander, and _I'm_ not a military officer." And think about the chaos that ensued when Adama and Tigh arrested Roslin and declared martial law at the end of S1/start of S2. This isn't a settled, stable society - its a super-fragile shell, trying to continue itself in forms it inherited from its much larger, safer, more prosperous pre-Apocalypse forbear. So Adama and the rest of the _Galactica_ crew need to be _very very careful_ about undermining the core assumption of obedience that underpins their authority.

In the US Navy there are 2 kinds of ships, depending on the personalities of their captain and division commander. "Spic and span" ships are kept in pristine condition. Everything neat and tidy. Any sign of rust or paint damage is dealt with as a priority. But, this comes at a cost. Their crews lose time that could be used in training for operational readiness. On the other hand, "Ship shape" ship's crews are honed weapons, 100% capable of carrying out their tasked functions, tho their ships are maybe a little scruffy. Command philosophy.

What I feel like gets glossed over rather quickly is the fact that the humans have done x-rays and autopsies on these organic cylons, and literally everything about them appeared human. Brain, intestines, lungs, all of that stuff was unidentifiable as not being from a regular human being. They clearly have emotions and free will, and psychologically are the same as humans. Baltar had to whip up a magical cylon detector to be able to tell the difference. The Pegasus crew didn't have a cylon detector. In every way, 6 appeared human to them. And they still did the horrible things they did to her. For Admiral Cain to allow that sort of thing to happen under her command says everything you need to know about her. She failed as a leader. Imagine being a woman on the Pegasus, knowing their fellow shipmates were going down to the brig to do that.

I know there were others, like Sharon, who we felt something for... but this episode (as brutal as it is) was necessary to show that there are monsters on both sides. This show was a commentary of Abu Ghraib and the torture that the "good guys" created. 9/11 was still a fresh wound at the time. While I don't know what you experienced and are feeling... the sense of rage at the perpetrators of that rape was shared by me, as well. You see the ugly truth about humanity as well as the cylons. Regarding differences between the two versions of this episode, outside of the SA scene, the most important one (IMHO) is right at the beginning. You see Kara talking with Adama and Roslin, describing a mission plan to go back to Caprica to rescue Anders and crew, but Adama believes that her plan to get raptors to jump back that far is overly optimistic. Then this meeting is interrupted by the alerts that another ship has jumped in. In the televised version, they do not show that Kara Thrace was in that room with Adama and Roslin. The other scene that was cut for time but gets the most attention in the extended version is a montage of Pegasus resupplying Galactica, including a Pegasus officer giving Gaeta a hard drive full of news and cultural records, to replace what Galactica had lost in the previous episode's memory wipe. What everyone remembers is that after thanking them, Gaeta then asks them hopefully, "Is there any p0rn in there?" As for the actual SA scene, their toned down editing actually changed the story a bit. In the televised version, it seems that Helo and Chief Tyrol arrive in the nick of time to prevent Lt. Thorne from doing the actual deed, but him coming so close is still traumatizing. With a re-ordering of scenes and a few more shots included, the extended version makes it clear that penetration occurred, and Helo and the Chief interrupted it rather than prevented it. Actress Grace Park has subsequently said that as far as she is concerned, that extended version is what actually happened, and this opinion has effected how she played the character in subsequent episodes.

And while we as the audience are primed to side with the crew because we're aware of all the exigent circumstances, it's not unreasonable for a new CO to want to crack down on all the crazy stuff that's happening. And the best way to go about that is by pulling bad seeds off Galactica and putting people she trusts into positions of responsibility. We as the audience don't want that, but unfortunately the only way the writers could justify not going there was by making Cain binky-bonkers from the moment she shows up.

The night after this aired was probably the most intense night for the Sci-fi discussion forum for this show. My favorite thread from that night was "The protruding bolt appreciation thread". The filming of that scene suggested that without that protruding bolt, Lt. Thorne might have survived being thrown against that wall. But there were plenty of less supportive people on there as well, including many who took the Pegasus crew's side. One thread that I frequently saw but didn't feel a need to read was titled "It's a blow-up doll, get over it". The dehumanization you discussed was unfortunately not limited to the fictional world.

This episode is important in the context of BG to show another possible response to the Cylon attack. The parallels to post-9/11 and other modern conflicts are valid. This was aired only 4 years after 9/11 so those political and military actions were a direct reference for this episode.

Historical context: This episode aired a few months after the public learned about abuse of Iraqi prisoners in the Abu Graib prison, which would become the real-world analogy for this rather than anything that was rumored at Guantanamo Bay.

I was in Iraq ( Camp TQ ) when the Abu Graib prison scandal came out and the intensity and fequency of insurgents attacks increased tremendously. I was with a Texas Guard infantry unit ( I volunteered for this deployment and 3 others,also did 2 tours back-to-back ) I also remember what some insurgents did to captives they had in their possession.Not pretty.
@jeremykraenzlein5975
@jeremykraenzlein5975 18 күн бұрын
@@user-be7tc2bd6e That last point is something that I argued plenty during these discussions on the Galactica forum and elsewhere. As horrible and disgusting and unacceptable as the abuses of Abi Graib were, they were not nearly as bad as what the Saddam Hussein regime or the insurgency did to their prisoners. It was also unfair how many people at the time spun Abu Graib as if it were our standard way of treating prisoners, equivalent to the greater abuses our enemies inflicted on their prisoners. The abuses on the other side were not stopped upon discovery, with the abusers held accountable by their internal system of discipline. There were many people on the forums who took the opportunity to slander all American and allied soldiers in Iraq, but there were also many veterans and people like me who would never let these slanders go unanswered. Even for people old enough to remember those times, watching Battlestar Galactica now is a very different experience than watching it at the time. Many of these arguments would fluidly shift between the show and the real life conflict, as people on all sides tried to trap their debating opponents into hypocrisy traps, arguing one thing for the show and another in real life.

There was a time in one of the pretty early episodes where Adama had to ask himself: "What am I fighting for, seriously? What will I be going back to if we win?" and most importantly "How will I ensure there's something to go back to?" I don't think the last one has hit Cain. I don't know if she's even open to it. It's not a defense, just my personal understanding of a character I absolutely loathe. Forbes did a good job. Cain also recontextualizes Adama, and even Tigh.

That’s what makes this set of episodes so good, they force civilians to have to look at the world through military eyes during a time of war and what happens to people when they’ve spent nearly a full year under Marshall law. And yea under Marshall law some people will allow their inner evil to take control under the guise of, “well I was just following orders.” Stay strong gals, these next few episodes are going to be a wild journey.

As a Trekkie, it was so cool seeing Michelle Forbes again. She’s perfect as the hard-ass Cain. It’s also cool seeing another Battlestar too, especially as it’s more advanced. But, of course, I did pick up on the twist of how, in Trek, the “hero” ships are normally the newest and best ships with the best crews. Whereas, this time, it’s flipped on its head and the crew are the absolute worst, really sadistic. Without spoiling anything, they made a TV movie much later, called “Razor”, which fills in all the backstory for the Pegasus and her crew. It’s definitely worth checking out, especially the uncut/unrated version on blu-ray. I think it was made and released around the time of the start of the final season.

Really good discussion about sexual abuse guys. I think you handled things and discussed things really well. And I think the show handles it well too. To be clear guys, the robotic Centurions are sentient too. They were robots that gained sentience, and rebelled against their human overlords. They then created the humanoid Cylons. The Raiders (the fighter ships) are more like animals. But yeah, those robot Cylons may not look human, but they are intelligent beings with feelings too. It hasn't been mentioned much since the miniseries, but the Six in the miniseries that knew Gaius gives a lot of information that hasn't been mentioned since. And yeah, the humanoids Cylons are not networked together. They are only uploaded from their bodies when they die, and downloaded into new bodies (as we were told by Six and Leoben). Also, I'm a bit confused as you guys are still acting like Head Six is a piece of Cylon technology when we have now been definitively been told by the show that Head Six is not a Cylon chip. Baltar had a brain scan. The show isn't lying to you. That theory that she is a Cylon chip with Six's personality copied into it has been fully discredited. When the show is that definitive, when it gives you a piece of information like that, you can trust it.

Wait, holy crap, I think I have that same narwhal stuffie... Well, RDM couldn't get Michelle to be on DS9, so he did the next best thing =p Gals, Gals, Gals... The military is varied; some commanders are like Cain, some are like Adama, some are competent, some aren't, some are much more relaxed, etc... Cain's Command is far from an "inevitable" outcome of a detached military command (even in a time of war). Ensign Ro DID follow orders- remember the Earring that she took off, until she was given the exception? -- Now, about THAT scene- yes, it was acted. The actors (and crew) were very respectful, (THAT actor was both very respectful and uncomfortable, from what I've heard)- hell, the one pushing for "moar" (in terms of showing it and the horror of it) was Grace Park (Sharon) (because it happens too much in real life); there are some interviews around where she addresses it. (I suggest the "Battlestar Galactica Grace Park Q and A at SyFy complete" at about 12:08 (for certain reasons)) But, that you felt so strongly (as so many of us did and/or do when we see it...), it did what it meant to do. Oh, and the discussions on the Skiffy boards after this episode about "can you rape a machine" vs "Cylons are obviously people" went on for months (if not years) (Last, you should at least watch the opening scene of the extended- as stated, I think the whole extended episode is worth watching, but the opening scene especially has some context for later)

Cain’s greatest crime is she fosters an attitude of rationalizing any crime within her crew as long as they see a net benefit for her cause. Her command style is the embodiment of “The ends justify the means.” Without spoiling future content, they do a decent job explaining how someone reaches that point psychologically.

This episode blurred the line between "good" Humans and "evil" Cylons brilliantly. Substituting Cylons for human "others" allowed so much. We all started out "othering" the Cylons, and Pegasus smacked everyone in the face with it. Maybe you had started thinking Boomer was different, but Cylons are still Cylons. Now Six is different, but how about the other Cylons? Something not mentioned often is that Imperial Japan viewed pretty much all other people as Nazis viewed the Jews. Just ask the Koreans and Chinese, who still have strained relations with Japan. Regarding the Palestinians, if Israel was removed from the picture, they still wouldn't be free, since they'd still be ruled by Hamas. Going the other way on othering, how about saying everyone who voted for Trump is a white supremacist fascist? It's just soooo easy to do. The beauty of the crew situation is that Cain was right about integrating the crews and the breakdown discipline on Galactica, as demonstrated by the reaction of Apollo and Starbuck to the news of their reassignment; but she was soooo wrong about pretty much everything else.

All of this unpleasantness could have been avoided if the president had at some point just given Adama the rank of Fleet Admiral. Since that's exactly the function he's performed since the beginning of the series, it's kind of weird that she didn't. Then, when the Pegasus arrived, what's-her-face would have been fetching his coffee instead of giving orders.

"This too, shall pass away," is reputed to be the one sentence that will always be true in any situation. "Next week will be worse," is the one sentence that will always be true after every episode. Often a very different kind of worse. There are 4th season beats that can only be described as cruel. So cruel they are almost inescapably aimed at the viewers. But, hard as it often is, with BSG, there can be no turning back.

Ahhh! Waited so long for you to finally see Michelle Forbes' return. But also knowing her character and the episode would be traumatizing. Easily one of my favorite moments of the series. I've often pondered how many dominoes they set up just to start knocking them down here - how far in advance did the writers plan this arc? I also think Cain, despite her decisions, is a sympathetic villain. I don't agree with her decisions but I understand most of them. And, what would Adama's future had been if the president didn't dissuade him from attacking. If he survived, how far into Cain territory might he have strayed.

@@CeiStockport-nx2qi I see her as an extremely “believable” character, and one that I feel like I can at least somewhat see how she ended up ,asking the decisions and being the person she is, but wholly agree I could never use the word sympathetic. Adama absolutely could have ended up a very different person, even a much closer one to Cain, without the pushback from Roslyn. Roslyn who has her own issues with being unable to see anything comparable to humanity in their enemy, but was very right about needing to preserve what they could. That’s the thing, though- no one is born “evil”, but even though I do want to understand why someone did the things they did and acknowledge the role outside events played it’s the same as generational trauma creating another abusive person, they are still responsible for the damage they inflict.

@RocketSurgn_. I wish that was the case but some people ARE born 'evil' by most societies standards. Sociopaths and Clinical Narcissists are the major ones. People who literally have to be trained to obey the 'rules' by making them believe it's in their best interests. Cain ticks all the boxes of a Psychopathic Narcissist. She didn't fall to the dark side because of the war, having no-one to answer too just let her be the person she always was.

The producers made decisions about the series to portray the violent dehumanizing realities of war . Ships capable of jumping vast distances , yet still using nukes and guns ? Pegasus sudden appearance and having survived by jumping away may weigh on the Admirals conscience after meeting Galactica and the civilian fleet . That's maybe the only excuse for her and her crew who are certainly not a reason for humanity to survive , almost beyond redemption in their treatment of the captive Cylons . Adama finally decided to follow the path of decency at the end of this episode . I can understand you both finding this episode distressing and you certainly aren't alone .
