Their first album "Enter" was Doom (gothic) Metal. I think it came out in 1997. IMO by far their best album. You should react to other songs from that album. I would recommend "Gatekeeper" or "Deep Within"

I LOVE the early era of Within Temptation! Their first two albuns are almost perfect!

Within Temptation formed in April 1996, the song and album Enter were released in April 1997, quite a few years before Epica and even 5 months before Nighwish's first album. The growl (they call it grunt) vocalist Robert Westerholt is Sharon's long term partner (now husband), they met at school in the early 1990's and have 3 children. He stopped playing with the band live in 2011 to be stay at home dad while Sharon is on tour, but still contributes guitar work in the studio and writes most of the music, Sharon writes the lyrics. Their producer Daniel Gibson also makes contributions to the writing. Sharon has had no singing lessons/vocal coaching, although some people will say otherwise, she hasnt.

love this song, and in general their earlier stuff is amazing, I personally like it much more than the new songs. Hope you react to them again, Ice Queen or Deceiver of fools are classic ones

And yeah, Within Temptation is just as “old” as Nightwish (around 1996) and this song is from 1997. You’re gonna love their live performances, they’re so theatrical and passionate about their songs, it’s a really beautiful thing to see and hear. And sure, try “Deceiver if fools” (best version, for me, is from Black Symphony concert, from 2008) and other songs, such as “The Promise”, “Mother Earth”, “Jillian”, “The truth beneath the rose” and “The other half (of me)”. Love the Within Temptation from back in the days. Got the EP with this song on vinyl, it's a blast every single time.

That certain style as you call it, came with/from a few norwegian bands in the early to mid 90s. Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania, 3rd and mortal, and Trail of tears,. Well worth to check out.

This song is from their debut album on which they had quite a different sound. This performance was recorded a few years later when they were touring the second album on which they ditched the growls and scored their first hit Ice Queen. Interesting fact: the original drummer and keyboardplayer on the debut album both had left by this point. The drummer would set up the band Kingfisher Sky, a more folky take on Within Temptation while the keyboard player (who is the brother of the growling guitarplayer) set up Delain.

I can actually hear pukkelpop in my backyard. Used to be a big fan. I remember we did a petition to get them on Belgian radio and we exceeded. And then they changed their style... 😢

Jaw-droppingly beautiful!!! A perfect balance of impressive vocals and symphonic instrumentation.

The grunter is Robert Westerholt, Sharons husband and co-founder of Within Temptation. It adds another layer to the performance in my opinion :-p unfortunately his vocal cords couldn't keep up with what they needed to do so in later shows, George from Orphanage regularly shows up to do them instead. Within Temptation also added a no-grunting clausule in their upcoming albums (Mother Earth & The Silent Force) with their record company at that time. For your remark on the passive crowd: I live in the smae city as where the festival is. Belgian crowds have always been this way when it comes to bands like Within Temptation and Nightwish for some reason I've yet to find out. They just don't like it I guess... Which is strange to say the least with all of the Dutch Metal Godessess as our neighbours. By the way: can you do a reaction vid to The Howling please? Just to show yet another side of Within Temptation.

I am a little sad that the Within Temptation & Evanescence concert scheduled for September in Luxemburg has been postponed to next year. It was one of the concerts together with Nightwish I was looking forward too earlyier this year pre-Covid19.

Within Temptation relesease their first album in either 97 or 98 (which this song is from) By the time this concert was recorded, they were on their second album, Mother Earth. Epica hasn’t existed yet or was just working o. Their first album. Within temptation are the big precursor of symphonic genre (along with Nightwish) and Epica has definitely been influenced by Within Temptation. There was actually quite a few symphonic metal bands that were created on the Netherlands (along with Epica) after Within Temptation’s Ice Queen got on the top of the charts. So that tells you who was first and that was not epica :)

In the beginnings of symphonic metal, growls were more common than nowadays, mainly because of the influence of the norwegian symphonic gothic doom bands like Tristania (later Sirenia), The sins of thy beloved, Trail of tears, etc... It ws the beauty and the beast concept. Later on, most bands switched to a more "accesible" music, leaving the growls away (Epica and Sirenia are 2 of the exceptions). Well, now you know some of the best symphonic metal bands (Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Delain), but there are some more you need to check: Therion, Haggard, Penumbra, Sirenia, Xandria, Diabulus in Musica. Definitiv die beste Zeit der Band. Der Start im Gothic Metal und der Übergang zum Symphonic. Was hab ich WT und Sharon damals geliebt. Beste Alben MOTHER EARTH und SILENT FORCE. Nach HEART OF EVERYTHING gings stetig bergab. Inzwischen haben sie den Symphonic Metal weit hinter sich gelassen um moderner und leider auch wesentlich mainsteamiger zu werden. Die wenigen Growls in der Anfangszeit sind von Bandgründer Robert Westerholt, Sharons Ehemann. Er hat sich 2011 aus dem öffentlichen Bereich zurückgezogen (geht nicht mehr mit auf Tour) um sich um die Kinder kümmern zu können. Er ist aber noch in Songwriting, Orga, Management, etc. involviert.

Thats also what i thought, really great quality for a concert of that age. Must sureley be a professional recording like the 2013 Wacken open air.

This is very old from first album. I love it but they have changed from this type of style. The growling is from Robert, (Sharon Husband) who created the band with her. Their songs are more melodic and they use guests whenever want a heavy growl or metal voice. Their second album after this is one of their best, Mother Earth.

Within temptation finde sogar ich ganz cool. Der Song hier hat was, wie du schon erwähnt hast dieses ungewöhnliche Arrangement. Dimash könnte den Song alleine singen. 😂 Für westliche Ohren vielleicht erst mal gewöhnungsbedürftig aber ein React zu Drunken concubine+Diva Dance mit Li Yugang zusammen performed wäre cool. Würde auch gleich meine vorherige Aussage bestätigen, dass Di diesen Song alleine singen könnte. 😁

I was such a big fan of this band twenty years ago, they were probably my second favourite band after Theatre Of Tragedy back then. Funny story: This is what i thought Nightwish was gonna sound like when i first heard about them. A relative of mine told me that there was this band called Nightwish that mixed heavy metal with opera (i think this was in 1999 or 2000), and my first thought was "Yes! another Theatre Of Tragedy / Within Temptation!!!". I managed to find a song by Nightwish (I can't remember which song it was, it might have been Crownless or Wishmaster), and I was so incredibly dissapointed. Instead of glorious doom/gothic metal it was some sort of hysterically fast keyboard-drenched power metal. It sounded like Helloween had gone insane and hired an opera singer. I absolutely hated it. I didn't start listening to Nightwish until the Once album, when they got rid of all the power metal. I later bought Nightwish's second to fourth album, but I can't say that I listened to them all that much. I just can't seem to get over my deeply rooted hatred of power metal. I have tried to listed to bands like Sabaton, but i just can't. Most power metal makes me wanna put on some good old Napalm Death or something, just to clean out all the cheesiness from my ears. The one exception to my power metal hatred is Lovebites. I LOVE that band, but most of their songs are really more in the vein of Iron Maiden (or thrash metal) than the cheesefests most power metal bands indulge in.

This is such a great song! They only used the growling on the first album. They really started out symphonic and very nightwish like, as in, all sorts of changes in the song. I didn’t know NW at that time, but was (and still am) a big WT fan. Now NW is more my taste because WT had a bit of a different sound now; still cool! But now I just like NW a bit more.

Particularly, I prefer Within Temptation after Enter! Sorry, THE BEST SONGS OF WITHIN TEMPTATION were created after the Enter album. This album, for me, is the worse album of the band! But is it not bad! You can listening when you are drunk, like me right now! :)
