@AJPiece I think the main reason people love Sanji's little "real men forgive the lies a woman tells" is that he appears to understand she's lying and has already moved past it, having already forgiven her. Every other character including Chopper are still questioning why Robin is abandoning them, giving some weight to her lies. Sanji appears to already see through it all.

@@Aleczandxr #AJPiece I know this comment is old so you likely won't see this, but he clearly is telling Chopper to forgive her for the harsh words she said. A lot of the advice Zoro and Sanji give Chopper in particular is under the guise of what "a real man" would do. You lavished Zoro with praise in the previous arc for doing the same thing. He tells Chopper to have faith and forgive her for the lies she's telling, the feelings she hurt.

#AJPiece about a year after the first time i watched water 7, my grandmother passed away. She was hospitalized for a while beforehand but without going too far into gruesome details everyone knew she wasn't going to make it. As silly as it sounds, what helped me through that grief is the story of water 7 and the death of the merry. It helped me in knowing to grieve as much as i was capable knowing nothing can be done and that my grandmother did as much as she could do be with us. There are so many moments throughout one piece that can have this sort of effect on anyone because of how incredibly human the characters are. No matter how bizarre the story can get, one piece uses that bizarre nature to let its characters feel more fully then any more realistic story ever could and it's a beautiful lesson for oda to teach, especially considering the target audience of one piece being young boys, who usually are taught to bottle in their emotions.

#AJPiece I appreciate you editing in a segment to talk about the good aspects of Sanji vs. Wanze. I completely understand being grossed out and annoyed by Wanze, though to me personally, the goofy humor Oda goes for really works amazingly. To me it's one of the most entertaining fights in the series. But beyond that, I think it adds incredible thematic depth to Sanji in a very subtle way. Like you said, it's great to see how Sanji talks about self-respect and honor as a chef, and not wasting food. But my favorite detail is that Sanji is willing to fight with knives here, essentially becoming the equivalent of a swordsman, because he's in a kitchen and using them against food. It's not just a clever moment, but ties back into the core themes with his character all the way back from Baratie. Sanji is a man who sticks to his principles, even when it's almost undeniably a bad idea to do so, because that's what principles are for. He won't fight women, even though sometimes you obviously would have to if the enemy is a woman. He'll feed even his enemies, even if they'll attack him afterwards. And he won't fight with his hands, even though he'd be stronger doing so. What Sanji vs. Wanze shows is that if he was willing to fight with his hands, with swords, he would actually have INCREDIBLE skill, possibly even keeping up with Zoro. After all, he never even practices using them to fight, and yet shows off insane prowess this one time. This gives his choice to never use them (outside this specific context) even more weight; we see the depth of what he's willing to sacrifice for the sake of his principles.

#AJPiece In Japanese, Tom’s catchphrase is “Do it with a Don” where “don” is a taiko drum sound effect that Oda uses a lot. Viz translates it as “DOOM” or “BOOM” and is used at the end of every episode for reference on what it sounds like. Keep an eye out for it as he uses it multiple times every chapter.

Usopp didn't don the mask after being ashamed of the moment of cowardice and the things he said... The things he said were the lies... what's he's salvaging with the mask is his pride as a man. He desperately wanted to fight for Robin and save her, but his pride wouldnt let him go back on his words, he said he was no longer in the crew, so he couldn't just forget everything that happened and join them. Enter Sogeking, and Usopp wins both ways, he does what he wants, and he "kept his word".

#AJPiece I find it beautiful how our entry into enies lobby is basically the summation of the crew's will having swelled back to it's peak just as the aqua laguna hits it's own towards the end of water 7, kokoro has a line that really encapsulates the strawhats' journey throughout the saga when she says “The stronger the ebbing is, the larger the waves are that will come back". Water 7’s a city that's constantly sinking and one that should've been swallowed by the aqua laguna long ago, it’s survived time and time again becoming a thriving metropolis thanks to it being constantly rebuilt on the foundations of the original town. I think it’s really impactful and integrative how the setting itself is a metaphor for this coming of age tale the crew undergoes holistically, they have to be able to adapt and build themselves as the upcoming obstacles demand. The further the crew begins to fall apart as incident after incident pushes them to the brink, so too is that mirrored in the aqua laguna's approach with their morale being at it's absolute lowest as the tides ebbing, then the climactic deciding moment for the crew was through learning about Robin's true motivations, that everything she's done was to protect the crew giving them new life and a sense of conviction despite everything that happened. Always love watching these reviews and thanks for the work you put in as always.

#AJPiece Love the analysis as always, so thanks! I feel there is one thing you could've talked and you didn't is Zoro's intervention during the call between Sanji and Luffy on the trains. It's not the first time we see Zoro worry for Sanji but this direct is a first and it shows that deep down, they care for each other as much as the other crewmates. It also highlights Luffy's innate empathy and understanding for his crewmates when he allows Sanji to go all out on his own and in contrast highlights Zoro's fear for his crewmates' wellbeing when he's not around, I think it's great

Klabautermann is a germanic fable, afro-Luffy being the boxer or all the admirals being based on actors Oda likes (Aokiji is based on Yusaku Matsuda, which is also the inspiration for Spike Spigle from Cowboy Bebop) and many more (cant wait for you to meet Tim Curry insert). #AJPiece The sea train is the embodiment of Tom's heart. He knows he is doomed for helping Roger but asks for time to build the train because he want's to save the island regardless. Franky knows and respect's him for that commitment. This train represents to him the values of his master. Seeing Tom get taken by the train make my heart ache every time and it's even harder to see Franky so desperately trying to stop the train. The sentence "where are you taking your creator" underlines the conflicting situation so beautifully: the train was created to bring hope the people of water 7 but is now carrying the town's savoir to it's demise.

#AJPiece I’m a bit late but still wanted to give my thoughts on the scene with Nami. Not only do I find it to be beautifully fitting that Nami who was the last member of the crew in dire need of saving, returns the favor by letting Luffy know Robin does need to be saved. But also how it fits with the theme of the crew each having their own roles to play. Usopp left because of his own insecurity as a crew mate, thinking he can’t possibly do what the others can and will just be left behind. But Nami, who like Usopp isn’t the strongest, shows there is more than just beating the strongest opponent. Luffy could not have left the East Blue without Nami by his side, and here he could not stand up to Aqua Laguna without Nami telling him the truth about Robin. It’s why it’s one of my favorite underrated scenes, especially as a Nami fan.

#AJPiece I absolutely adore how Oda contrasts beliefs, not just through characters but also through different circumstances, environment, and how characters live their lives. A fine example of this would be with Franky and Iceberg, not only do they contrast each other through this theme of power and through their personalities, but it's even more reinforced by their differing life styles. Franky ends up living at the bottom where he devolves into building only distrust, fear, and disrespect towards his name. Meanwhile Iceberg has become the president of Galley-La and the mayor of Water 7, making a respectable name for himself. The reason I think this further nails in their opposing beliefs is because Iceberg ended up building a community, economy, and a productive market, however one thing he never made was weapons. Contrast to Franky, instead becoming a dismantler, never to build again (at least until he found the echoing spirit of Tom in the straw hats) due to his self repentance and is exactly what led to him fully embodying Toms ideals and becoming a weapon that could never be used by anyone but himself. Just these little details put into characters really plunge you into this world even more, making them feel like real people that could exist in our world. The more and more little details Oda puts in this story, the more and more it builds up and up into a huge, expansive, and detailed world. I'm so happy you're talking about my favorite story ever, it has changed my outlook on life completely and you always give me more insight and appreciation for stories, so I'm always very excited to watch these videos! Much love to you and your videos! (also Sogeking is the best superhero ever written.)

#AJPiece I think Cutty Flam/Franky denies his ships out of shame more than trying to shunt responsibility. He built these ships originally for the purpose of defending people from SeaKings. The fact that they were used to harm people was so antithetical to their creation that Franky felt violated by this. Also I want to point out the crowds jeering and calling Tom 'Fishman' reflects on Aarlong. This reaction implies that Fishmen are discriminated against just like Aarlong discriminated against humans. I won't say any more, but I've really been enjoying these reviews and can't wait for Eniss Lobby

#AJPiece I wanted to ask you a bit about Zoro, who is probably my favourite One Piece (and also Anime/Manga) character of all time. I love that you always pick up on the subtle looks and glances he gives that Oda always makes sure to include as reactions to things that happen in the story. In my opinion, he plays a tremendously important role in maintaining the vitality of the crew and the story as a whole, and that's maybe epitomised in Water 7 and Enies Lobby. I was just wondering if you had any particular thoughts on the role Zoro has played thus far in this arc and what has both preceded and followed it, especially regarding his function as a 'first mate' to Luffy. As always, thanks for the amazing videos and streams that have made my life just that much more interesting and enjoyable over the past 6 months

#AJPiece this is probably too late to be read in a video but just wanted to share, but I kind of love how in the same arc where Usopp leaves the crew, he kind of pseudo-recruits Franky. Like he steadily becomes invested in all of them over the arc, but Franky's first point of contact with the Strawhats is Usopp, and they have a lot of good meaningful moments in that time over The Going Merry. While Luffy is inevitably the main boss and finishes winning Franky over alongside Robin, I find it very insightful into Usopp's potential to truly be the brave warrior of the sea he wants to be (and in some ways already is). God I love Usopp, he's also one of my faves and has been since Alabasta

A small blink and you'll miss it detail is that in 354 towards the end there is a couple panels for the maiden voyage of the completed puffing tom that show kiwi and mozu riding it for its first voyage which is nice but more importantly there is a kid watching from the shore with a familiar set of goggles on him who is most likely Paulie. Later on when Luffy asks about the potential of another train Paulie nonchalantly says no the puffing tom is unique only a master can build it. As an example of revering history and inheriting will I think its very beautiful that someone who never knew tom can still look at toms accomplishments and derive a dream and ambition from it (similar to Luffy and roger). So much so that when he grows up he aims to learn from the closest person he knows to the legendary shipwright Tom, being Iceberg. Toms dream had a resolute don in people he didnt know whether he wanted it to or not. This is one of the reasons why on my initial read I view him as a potential straw hat.

#AJPiece Thank you for always giving me a better perspective in understanding one piece aj because I think sometimes I forgot how densely packed this story with ideology and story telling nuances because how simple Oda drawn his character and a light-heartedness of the crew. I always wanted you to cover one piece after I followed your anime analysis for years. It was a gift for me. For me, Tom fear for Nico Robin and Iceberg perspective and ideology aligned more with antagonist is the same things with the thematic ending between Calgara and Noland & Wipers and Gan Fall. Oda never tells his story in extreme or preached others at one side of ideology but he always shown your action or intention is what makes the ideology bad. Iceberg perspective on the dangerous power shouldn't exist is not morally wrong but when come to CP9 and Spandam their destructive action and intention is bad what makes your ideology extreme. Same with Calgara you can be as religious as you want but when you willing to sacrifice your own daughter it was bad to do so. Same goes to Noland wanted to save the village but cutting down something that precious to a group of people without properly asking permission and discussing it with the people there is what's make Noland feels bad. And Oda do this without preaching or explaining to us what we should do. Just show as what a good person do. In larger perspective this is what I think Luffy ideology for freedom stand for. He want freedom but he never use it to harm others directly and he also never blame a governmental structure when they don't do bad things as shown with Luffy befriend a good leader of each Island and fight the bad one. Ideology and differences what make human progress and your bad action is what held it back. Your prespective and ideology can never be bad but watch out your intention and action. For me that's the overall thematic themes of one piece. What do you think AJ? And what I find funny is they try to punish Tom for building a pirate ship but at the end the whole economy of Water 7 revolve around repairing and building ships mostly for pirates. In a sense you are right, Tom never dies because it live bigger than ever as Water 7 itself.

44:09 it is interesting the problem with that is Tom has no idea who Robin is only what he read in the use that she is from the island of Ohara that research for the secret weapons and that's why he warned Iceberge and fear her, why else would you read the Ponygliph. Tom is a Fishmen which is another race and from Arlong Arc we know there is racism going on an animosity between humans and fishmen, that's why the public view on Tom shifts drastically as humans see them like animals and wild and Tom hitting Spandam add to that idea. 50:57 not an island but a large abandoned ship so he used its parts.

The way you go through the story chronologicaly and talk about all the emotions and feelings takes me back to the summer 3,5 years ago when i stayed up all night watching the water 7 and enies lobby arc. I just had to watch "one more" episode before hiting the sack. "I don't need sleep i need anwsers" is what i told myself. There are only a handfull of shows i can say that make me anxious about how much time is left of the episode, just wishing it would never end becuase i want this to go on forever. One piece is defenetily one of them and especially the water 7 and enies lobby arc. Going back and reviewing masterpieces like these never does get old! Sry about the rambling but i just wanted to share my thoughts a little bit. Now to my question. We learned In the water 7 arc and especially in Franky's backstory that the world gouvernment is very cautious and afraid of people and stuff that could pose as a weapon against them. Thusfore limiting freedom and techincal advancements in the sense that it could cause harm. So heres my point. Do you think there's a chance there once was a more techologialy advanced society on the sea than what we see today? Like in XC2. For example if there was easier ways for everyone to obtain information and spread information freely. Like how internet and social media works in our society today. Fascism countrys wants to eradicate the possibilty of free speach on social media cus it could pose as a threat to their reigm and credabilty as leaders. We also learned in east blue that treasures dont have to be in material fashion. Freespech and the abilty to spread information widly is a great treasure but it could also be used in malicious manners by spreading missinformation. So in short do you think the world was once more free and technologicaly advanced than as of now? Its hard to explain exactly what i mean but i hope you get the gist of it. Wish you a SUUUUPER day

something of note to me is that the "nice" marines are always still an obstacle to over come. regardless of who they are as individuals they are still a cog in a machine, no matter their personal ideals or kindness they still need to be defeated to move forward.

1:28:45 This is a common mistake, mostly because of the nose, and that he arrives as soon as Usopp leaves, but this is Sogeking, Usopp's good friend. As opposed to Usopp, who is from Syrup Village in the East Blue, Sogeking comes from Sniper Island, which is in your heart. If you need an easy way to recognize them, here it goes: Sogeking wears a mask, but Usopp doesn't

An tom didnt jut build any ship for roger, he build THE ship of the pirate king An glad sogeking savd ussop ufff And i forgot sanji left tht clevr letter. Ooooh the ruins and that ar submerged go so well with, robin, an hitory and that.

I'm confused, maybe someone can clarify, or if AJ himself sees it maybe he can, but when you mentioned that Tom believed that power isn't good or evil, only how you use it, but you were interested in how he didn't share the same perspective on Robin, I don't remember Tom ever commenting on Robin. Iceberg was the one who believed her knowlege was inherently dangerous, which is consistent with his perspective on the battleships in the flashback. Did you mean to say Iceberg? Or did Tom indeed think she was inherently dangerous too and I just forgot.
@Aleczandxr
@Aleczandxr Жыл бұрын
So as always I could’ve made a mistake and if so, always encourage people to clarify for me. But it looked to me like Tom was the one who told them about Robin and to be careful about her - which I’m sure Iceburg exaggerated due to his experiences and his own opinions as well. But he seemed to be the reason Iceburg was wary in the first place as he showed them Robin’s poster.

@@Aleczandxr Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I just re-read the backstory and yeah I musy have forgotten Tom's "another thing that worries me" comment with Robin's bounty poster indeed. I don't think you misunderstood, it seems to have been the reason why Iceberg mistrusts her. Considering Tom's mindset when it comes to the battleships, it does seem weird that he would be worried about Robin. I have more to say but it kind of requires me to talk about Enies Lobby spoilers, and while I know you are past that now, I know some people watching this video and reading the comments might not be, so I won't say anything else.

#AJPiece I think one thing Oda excels at is nuance. Yes One Piece is an incredibly nuanced series, but it isn't just a simple thing is always good or bad. What I love about the themes of this arc is how it analyzes the different ways these viewpoints on power can go wrong and right. In the end, I think it's about responsibility which is what young Franky lacks. Tom clearly respects the creative mind Franky has in his constant attempt to outdo himself and improve. And even though Oda clearly lies more with Franky overall, it's more about the prejudicial overcorrection to power where it becomes an excuse to discriminate. I'd compare it to Chopper's arc, where he had to combine the idealism and drive of Hiriluk with the technical ability and knowledge of Kureha. Franky isn't in the wrong just for wanting to make these weapons, but for how irresponsibly he leaves them lying around, not giving a thought to his responsibility as a creator. That's what makes Tom's anger so amazing near the end of the flashback. He is clearly someone who puts a lot of thought into his works, spending hours drafting up his inventions, the sea train the product of him looking at the hopelessness of the people around him and trying to use his skills to bring hope and prosperity to everyone. But when Franky tries to abandon all connection to his creations, that's unforgivable. You cannot ignore your responsibility as a parent/creator to your children/creations. It was part of Franky's growth and made him who he was and to deny it is to deny himself as well. It's running away. And that's what makes Franky's own sacrifice so fitting. As a cyborg, he essentially has to recreate himself, having to become one with his own irresponsible creations of the past, being his own battleship as he learns how to wield his new power properly. His new battle power does more than just give him the swaggering confidence to be a tyrant, he clearly starts using it more responsibly as he brings the backstreets and underbelly of Water 7 under control, becoming a central figure to the town in his own way with his own power. In the end there's validity to what Iceberg says and thinks, but both him and Tom make the same mistake with Robin on deciding that knowledge can't be responsibly used. It's ironic since they both have the Pluton and are treated the same way as Robin despite both obviously believing they're different. As usual, the answer is in the middle, a mix of both the dreams to create something new and dangerous and the responsibility in wielding it and giving that power out to people you trust. Obviously Tom does not think he made a mistake in giving Roger his ship, now does Iceberg regret giving the blueprints to Pluton to Franky. And that's why I love One Piece, the optimism to believe in people and others while having the maturity to understand the limits of it.

As someone, who wholeheartedly loves both Usopp and Sanji as characters - for every time I get excited at you gushing about Usopp, my heart sinks a little at your (admittedly, not huge) distaste for Sanji's infatuation with women (the gag part). Oh well, you win some, you lose some. At least you liked the train station bit alright, I'll take that as a win. 😂
