Part 3 of 3, the thru hike across the Florida Trail comes to an end! This is the final episode. We finally enter the swamp, see some snakes, 100 alligators, and go more than 20 miles without water? Weird, I know! Unexpected to say the least. In this section I actually hit my 10,000 miles as a thru hiker. Fitting it would be on the Florida Trail!
Our journey starts out on the Seminole Trail, a 20 mile bike path around the outskirts of Orlando. It's a lot of fun, and we get to play a lot of Pokemon Go. Expansive sections of Palm hammocks, and old growth oak tower above us. We travel in and out of long open wetland prairies. Bull Creek, Forever Florida, Three Lakes WMA, Kicco WMA and the Kissimmee Prarie Preserve (the darkest place in Florida, known for astrophotography) leads into the Kissimmee River, and Lake Okeechobee. We bare witness to the the vast fields of sugar cane, a lake half the size of Rhode Island, and continue our southbound thru hike.
Both excited to enter Big Cypress National Preserve, despite the immense difficulty, and the weird trail conditions this year. We hike through swamp and mud for miles on end, I accidentally step over a venomous Water Moccasin / Cottonmouth snake, and we finish what is known as the hardest hike in the United States. Both wild and remote, this swamp in the everglades is not to be underestimated, whether you're a fresh nobo or a hardened sobo.
Thank you for coming along with us on the Florida National Scenic Trail!

Hi. Comments on this section: 1. The open prairies look really nice and scenic (minus hot weather) 2. The old oaks are very unique and beautiful Questions: 1. Have you tried any of the western section around Orlando (even day hike)? 2. I noticed from your and Chris Berry's series, most of the water is brown. Does a Sawyer water filter make it more drinkable, from a taste perspective. I also noticed there was more "clear" water in the panhandle than elsewhere. Is that correct? 3. I noticed you wear what appear to be trail runners(?). I normally hike in Merrell Moab hiking shoes or boots when doing the AT. Can I assume that using tennis shoes or trail runners would be more than adequate for the Florida Trail since there are no rocks? 4. What are the best months (from a weather perspective) to hike the Florida Trail? I would probably do it in sections. Thanks for a well-made and photographed series on this unique trail! God Bless...

I live in Palm Beach County and have only done some short hikes in the Ocala NF, but would like to hike more in the areas south of Orlando. What is sections would offer the least road walking and more of the palm and oak hammock areas that can be enjoyed for maybe 3-5 days of hiking? I'm 65+ so I'd only be covering maybe 10 miles per day. Thanks for your suggestions!

Dang I was hoping to do the 30 mile stretch between Tamiami trail and alligator alley but it seems like the worst part of the trail. I’m just getting into hiking and living in south Florida I don’t have many options. Do you recommend this section as my first multi day hike? I’ve only done day hikes between 8 and 12 miles.

@jessiporch7715
@jessiporch7715 4 жыл бұрын
Ok, so if I did this, what do you think is the best possible itinerary? SOBO or NOBO-it looks like SOBO saves that super wet bit for the end, potentially saving your feet a bit. You have said that people hike “in the winter?” Which months are most favorable? If I’m not mistaken you and Lotus went south in March? That seems like a good time because of longer days and maybe the trail is driest then? But I’m not super familiar with Florida. Thank you in advance! Always love your videos and your spirit!
@JupiterHikes
@JupiterHikes 4 жыл бұрын
Most go nobo and I'd recommend that for that reason, the company and community. I like sobo better but you likely won't see another soul the entire way. Nobo is hard just because you start with like the hardest 200 miles of the trail first, instead of ending with that when you're strong. But the community and comradery is so important for the success of a lot of people. You start the trail anywhere between December and February and want to finish in March. Most start January first or right around then

The Florida trail looks really nice. How did you get on with the Zpacks Duplex? Did you feel like it would have been nice to have had a bit more room? I was considering the Triplex for me and my girlfriend.
@JupiterHikes
@JupiterHikes 4 жыл бұрын
The duplex was perfect for us. More room could be a nice luxury but we never really had a problem or found ourselves wanting more even in rain, or the long winter nights. Maybe if we had more gear or if the focus of the hike was slower a triplex could be nice but generally I'd always prioritize carrying less.

Do you recommend hikers start/finish at the "new" terminus, or carry on down to loop road?
@JupiterHikes
@JupiterHikes 4 жыл бұрын
The original terminus of the FT was the Oasis visitor center, moved to loop road, and now moved back. The roberts lake trail (I think that's it's name) is no longer maintained, and even finding the trailhead at loop road is difficult so I'd say no. Oasis is as it should be, as it was first intended. Loop road was a very cool section, and I wish it were still in good health but there just aren't enough volunteers down there to do so. It's basically one guy doing all of big cypress. For anyone who would like a very gnarly time, and to extend the swamp, I'd say go for it! I enjoyed it years back when I went through

What navigation tools do you use? How is it possible that people can traverse the wet section and not get bit by anything?
@JupiterHikes
@JupiterHikes 4 жыл бұрын
I use a gps, or in this case Guthook. It wouldn't be that hard with simply a guidebook either. The terrain is physically extremely demanding though. As for getting bit by something, in maybe 4,000 miles of florida hiking I've only ever seen 4 or 5 water moccasins. so About 1 per every thousand miles! They aren't that common a sighting in the winter. For instance on my last FT thru hike in 2017 I didn't see a single snake the entire hike. But generally, just keep your wits about you in the swamp! Which is good always anyways

I have not, though I've heard it's nice just looking at a map you can see why most avoid it. I'd love to check it out sometime but for now the east is so much more developed trail wise for the thru hiker.

@@JupiterHikes My great-great-grandfather brought his family to the area east of Tampa from Alabama by wagon in 1872.
