Unless the ship is directly lost in action, whether it is WAR or exploration(gets dragged into the Black hole or something), 16 YEARS is an absolutely abysmal short service life. Especially for a ship that should easily do 100 years. This is likely due to new writers, who want to put "their name on it", and opt to decommission or kill the previous ship so they can do that.
@mallios13
@mallios13 Жыл бұрын
Given future tech, retrofits, and the likelihood of tech plateauing, I definitely agree. If anything, some of these ships could see 200 years of service. How fast would the tech really be developing by this point? If anything, PIC makes it look like the Federation's social and technological advances have begun to heavily decay since Picard captained the Enterprise, so the Enterprise E would probably still outclass anything in service during his admiralty and retirement.

The bit we did see, is likely all we're ever going to get. They want the Titan A to be the golden goose of the series in the hopes that a Constitution knock off with the old TNG crew will be enough to sell the show to impress their shareholders and improve profits from the series since it's largely failed to do that to date. It may be pessimistic of me to think this way, but that's exactly how it looks to me.

Not only that, the ships don't look well designed at all. The E has clearly a superior design to the F. F is bulky and badly shaped, while we have phaser strips, it is not a good design choice to curve the saucer vertically with phaser strips on it. The ventral side of the saucer suffers from the lack of a flat surface. The main weakpoint is the tunnel, that is where the ship will take massive damage of the shield breaks, where it either breaks apart, or where one hit might hit like it was in the interior of the ship, just because it hits all 4 sides of the tunnel... . Many new designs of Picard also have thin pylons which is a bad weakpoint for crucial infrastructure like plasma conduits or even the main power between the engineering section and the saucer section.

Patrol vessels are inherently *very* different in role from exploratory vessels or more balanced vessels. Definitely more of an interceptor type. And they would have features that reflect thst. Some that come to mind immediately are: heavier weapons, better shields and hull armor, possibly better sensors, and engines likely modified for higher burst impulse speeds to intercept and engage threats that is provided by unusually large and powerful impulse engines and smaller, less powerful warp engines less capable of high or sustained warp speeds. Think ww2 PT boats versus a normal destroyer of corvette. They had an unusually heavy armament for their size.

Its in line with modern military history too. In times of need armies and navies make do with what they have while waiting for new equipment. There's a reason they keep huge stockpiles of outdated tanks, aircraft and ships around even today - they never know when they'll need to be brought back into service and given a few quick updates while possible. Even in a supposedly post scarcity society (that notion is slowly coming apart at the seams as the Federation gets tested again and again) there's still not infinite resources or energy available. If you can rebuild an old ship into something decent and salvage the rare materials from its obsolete systems then you should do that.

The dialogue in season 3, ep 1 of Picard made it sound like the Titan A is a refit of his Titan that we first saw on screen as a Luna class in Lower Decks and additional lines support this so most likely the showrunners did not know that there is a canon version of the Titan that Riker commanded and there is nothing on the Titan A that even remotely LOOKS like it's from a Luna class. I feel like the showrunners are attempting some quick fanservice before quickly sending the legacy characters and ship designs off to the farm in the sky, and I think that's a waste. But I also think the _TNG_ crew are done. This is why I like _STO_ 's story: It places the attention in the hands of entirely new blood, with some old faces providing support from time to time, but not taking center stage. A franchise cannot survive on nostalgia alone, after all, it has to blaze new trails from time to time, while still honouring what came before.
@TheZamaron

Indeed, STO even brings back or makes new plot threads from things left over from the shows. Such as the Vaadwuar were in one Voyager episode, yet they made them the big bad of the Delta Quadrant arc. Or the Dominion fleet lost in the Bajoran Wormhole when it closed had returned in STO. The game even makes some awesome lore connections like the Fek'hiri and Hurq being a threat to the Klingons because of the Dominion looking for soldiers. STO feels like a huge love letter to Star Trek, it even expands well on Discovery by adding a prologue story setting up Episode 3 and onward. Or Agents of Yesturday explaining the left over mysteries of the Temporal Cold War and other time travel stuff. I recently played through the entire story and have had a blast rewatching episodes to see their connections to STO or just important info I need to understand the story. I think they should have either tried to fit the new material into STO and make it semi canon (At least the events of the game) or just make New Trek a splitting timeline, events play out differently in both timelines, but similar things still happen like the Enterprise-F launching in the 2400s, not so early that it's being decommissioned by this time. It's why for my own headcanon I consider STO official, just it's own timeline, but still effects the Prime Timeline as we know time travel is weird in Star Trek, like the Enterprise-E still goes back to First Contact, yet the Kelvin TImeline existing prevents them in this timeline from going back, but it still happens.

The Odyssey has always been one of my favorite STO designs, and for the writers to bring it in only to decommission it feels like a massive copout. They could've just as easily made it the -E with the same story and it would probably be more thematically appropriate for the show, considering this season is supposed to be the TNG's sendoff.

Starfleet logic in Picard: yeah let's take our best and most advanced exploration ships to be decommissioned in favor of a ship that is the equivalent of the Tog 2 tankin the form of the Titan A. We should see ships like the Vesta, Dauntless ( Starfleet built) and Odyssey class. I think the Enterprise F should have been replaced by the Verity in it's Verity class configuration for the decommissioning. It's a much better symbolic ship for the End of Picard's captaining days.

Then launch of the Enterprise-F would be a "torch passing" moment at the end of season. If they're to overwrite so much previous lore anyway, don't insult fans by making the only appearance of the Enterprise-F on screen be it flying off to its decommissioning.

I’d like to see the new Intrepid from Picard season 3 get some time as a hero ship in a series. That ships looks awesome. Different enough to breath some fresh air into the ships but still has classic lines and looks like it belongs. It would fit too since the older Intrepid class was what Voyager was. Plus the ship looks like an evolution of the Wasp class ship. They could call it the Hornet or make it Hornet class. The Hornet was one of the famous WWII US carriers like Enterprise, Yorktown, and Lexington.

My take on the Enterprise F being retired in 2402 but still appears in STO 2409-ONW. During all the early conflicts of STO, Starfleet lost a lot of ships and therefore brought the old F out again since they didn’t have a new class of starship worthy of the name Enterprise.

I think either the F is getting an unofficial refit into Yorktown which for some reason gets to take far more than it normally should, or that -G is also commisioned as a Ross Class Enterprise and after -F refit is completed, they both retain flagship status, just of different fleets(e.g. 1st fleet Ent-F, 2nd Fleet Phoenix, 3rd Fleet Ent-G etc.) cause quite frankly UFP total ship count by 2400's is already huge to not justify smaller fleets maybe even depending on Quadrant or area stationed or patrolling or exploring to make them more maneauverable tactical, defendable and combat worthy if needed.

The way I see it and think it's supposed to be is, all ships with the same name are considered in the same legacy, in a sense? Only ships that really, truly prove themselves to be unique, through the extenuating circumstances of their particularly outstanding crews, get a real "successor" that will share it's registry. I think part of the reason for this, using the examples you mentioned too, that there can be a LOT of time passed between ships of the same name in a legacy, but if a ship and crew REALLY prove themselves, the successor comes immediately, so giving it the same registry makes sense. I think also part of the intention is that, when possible, the crew from the original ship will largely also transfer over to the new one.

It is common, for ships that are getting massively upgraded to be decommissioned first, this usually means that the refit may take more than a year. If they connect it to Star Trek Online, then it makes sense when Shon takes command of her in 2410. The upgrades could be the Yorktown subclass like it is in the game. The original series Enterprise was decommissioned 3 times over its lifetime because of the major refit it underwent. Therefore the Enterprise-F could have been rushed during the Iconian conflict or the Klingon-Federation War of 2408-09 to complete it. Play the Iconian mission over Earth, I think Shon makes a reference that the ship isn't quite finished but it isn't the first time that the Enterprise was rushed into service. Referring to the Enterprise-A and B. If this leads to the game which I don't think they'd do unless they wanted to give Worf his adopted daughter which from what we see they did not. Therefore, it'd be interesting if the story starts to look towards the game consequently the game is canon. Which I'd be down for but I don't think so. Though current Trek outside of animated and Picard so far has been okay. SNW looks promising end Discovery already bombed.

I feel the launch of the Odyssey class is too early in the timeline and STO's depiction makes relatively more sense. Voyager arrived back in 2378, and the Sovereign class capital ship launched in the early 2370s, which means an Odyssey as successor to the Sovereign had to be in development and go into production very quickly. The Odyssey is personally my favorite Trek design since the Galaxy. But, there is an appeal to what you are saying about silence on the Enterprise E's final years and the Enterprise F's career leaving the field open for an Enterprise G and a new show. I would not want that show to be produced under the current Secret Hideout paradigm, though.
@andromidius
@andromidius Жыл бұрын
This happens with modern militaries too - a new replacement is developed almost immediately after the previous model is released and takes decades to perfect (if ever). With the problems the Federation was facing with escalating threats its possible they pushed out the Odyssey too quickly before it was ready. Having a brand new ship fail to surpass the previous ship in any meaningful way while being a logistical and technical headache might have caused it to be recalled for further refinement. For example, the Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. They started work on that in the early 1970's, didn't have a prototype until the 80's, took until the 90's to produce the final design and took another decade to refine and test it to satisfaction before being actually adopted for military use. And that's 'just' a fighter jet!

To bring in the Odyssey class in for fanservice only to drop it in the trashcan feels like a massive copout, especially as it was designed by a fan for fans. Good video summary. I’ve not seen P3 yet but longtime Trek fan. My sense is that even if the Enterprise Odyssey is decommissioned, there will still be room to show Odyssey class vessels in future Trek albeit other names perhaps. From a writing perspective it makes sense to “classify” the histories of these ships so as not to “bind the hands” of any future writers or shows that might seek to tackle the narrative/missions/fates of Enterprise’s E & F. No need to unnecessarily introduce potential plot conflicts. I love the idea/justification that some of the new “Neo-“ starships are the result of great ship losses and using the old space frames that were on hand. It serves to push the nostalgia too.

I was so hyped that the enterprise F would make an appearance in Picard. The Odyssey class is my favorite ship design in Star Trek and it being canonized was awesome but to now to only see it at its decommissioning is a real bummer. I thought we would see more of it and that the ships would have stayed in service longer than 20 years. One should think the tech and frame of Starfleet ships at that time would support even extensive upgrades so a ship could serve for 30+ years.

one of the things i think the writers really dont get is 20 years IS NOT a long time for a ship! there is a certain level of modularity in any ship build and in many instances upgrades are "on the drawing board" as soon as the ship is commissioned! we saw this concept in the TNG episode with Dr. Leah brohm who designed the galaxy class. today's naval ships were this way and TOS era, TNG era have all gone along with this paradigm i would be REALLY interested in knowing WHY a ship particularly a capital ship is being 'mothballed' after only 16 years!

According to David Blass, the Titan-A is 1839ft (560m) in length. The old Shangri-La class was 295m. That's about 2x the size of the old Shangri-La. The Luna class was 450m. While the styling of the Titan-A is similar to the Shangri-La, I suppose it is more plausible that they could have recycled the components from the Luna class Titan.

There's also a blink and you'll miss it moment in the episode saying that Voyager-A has been retired/lost already. Voyager-B is getting launched. I guess the silver lining of having them shoved out of the timeline so early by the live action shows is that it gives the cartoons in the 2380s-90s more freedom to do what they want with these designs. I bet Lower Decks would have a field day with the chance to blow up the Ent-E.

Its like what is happening with the fans series and such: where rights are concerned they're totally owned by the current rights holder(CBS-Viacom). They're like sub-contractors that can benefit through the game, paying CBS-Viacom a fee, but if CBS-Viacom wants to profit externally, from some design(like the ships they added to Canon from STO) all profits go to them. But maybe Cryptic and profit as well, if they sell goods that aren't part of canon. This would be dependant on contract safeguards and legalities.

The Titan-A is a Very LAZY redesign from the original. At least the [Luna Class] was its own animal and not yet another variation of the Enterprise. It makes having its own identity MUCH MUCH harder. Also it just shoves everyone in the same box of functionality, just bigger or smaller and/or boxier or smoother. The [Luna Class] Titan visually read as a tougher ship that could go into danger very easily and come out almost as easily, or punch above its weight and win. Some people like to exclaim the Enterprise is a character in its own right. Well, what does it same for the character of a ship when it reduced to just a" less big Enterprise"?

If you go watch Spacedock's newest video on the Enterprise F, you'll see a lot of the explanation surrounding the Odyssey's early appearance, the Verity (actually NCC-97001) being sent out before it was really ready, and the project being basically canned until its second launching in 2409. That's a fine explanation as far as I'm concerned. After that is where things get weird now, considering NuTrek has once again HEAVILY messed with everything which Star Trek Online would've covered already. I genuinely hope that STO now considers itself its own timeline, not subject to the changes and retcons of Picard or any other NuTrek series. Stop trying to mend holes, delete events and characters, or massively alter the story in order to fit with Picard's story. It just can't coexist, let's accept that and keep STO going. Aside from my personal belief that STO is a better story anyway, it'd be too much effort for very little benefit to the game.

Well, the Enterprise from TOS was decommissioned in 2270, over 3 years it was refitted, and launched in 2273 (Star Trek 1) with the same registry number. My head-cannon is the Enterprise-F was similarly decommissioned in 2402. Then over 8 years it was refitted to become a Yorktown Sub-Class and launched in 2410. Matching up with STO. Those 8 years could see the Titan-A be the flagship. I know 8 years is a longer time-span than 3, but depending on the level of "wear and tear" and work needed to refit it. Plus you could have it where they refitted it, sent it for a test run, the ship tore itself apart, and then had to be repaired, refitted again, and launched. Making the 8 year span make sense as they would need to find out why it tore itself apart before restarting the refit process.

I wonder what ship was the flagship between the decommision of the B and the constructions of the enterprise-C or even after the C was lost...Why do I have a wierd feeling the Hood was a big candidate, that ship has seen action for most of its existance, and whenever you turned around there was the USS hood.

There was a recent piece of concept art posted by Dave Blass showing how the Titan was being essentially cannibalized to make the Titan-A. Ghoulish in a way. But it’s in a small way similar to the real life USS Enterprise CVN 65 being scraped and part of it being recycled into its next generation of carrier. Ultimately I hate the lifespans of current era Trek treats it’s vessels. The original Constitution was in active service for decades and they get shorter and shorter.

While it’s obvious that they retired the enterprise F so that they could end with an enterprise G story wise, I wonder if one of the reasons why they didn’t continue with the F, especially for or a part of a future spinoff, was due to the royalties that they may have had to pay for using that design on screen. Versus a ship design that is done or commissioned by the studio.

My hope for the enterprise is that is becomes the "second" hero ship. By that, I'm referring to the fact that the Titan is gonna be getting messed up by the villain at some point and I feel like the Enterprise will be either the last "good ship" (seeing as there seems to be this whole trust no one situation) or the clique of being the closest ship to respond

I genuinely can't put into words how much I want that exact scenario... only for the unexpected rescue to come from the Cerritos. Full on hero shot out of the nearest sun / nebula / convenient brightly lit space oddity. Preferably with the familiar Galaxy-like saucer first then the struts coming out of the light a few seconds later. The fandom wars would be never-ending! It'd even make sense from a timeline point of view as Starfleet utility ships seem to make do with hulls not made of explodium and have service lives measured in centuries...
@Spamsmoothie1701

16 years of service life isn't long for an Enterprise. Kirk's Enterprise was in service for some 45 years with a major refit in between, giving it a more or less 45 year old frame and a 20 year service life on the refit design. That ship might very well have served longer were it not so badly damaged by the Reliant. The Enterprise-A had a short life, but if it really was the Yorktown, it's even older than the original Enterprise was. The Enterprise B's service life could have been fairly long as well. It's really just the C, D, E, and F that are all short lived. Plus, Starfleet has refit and rebuilt ships that were absolutely messed up. It seems odd that they would replace the Odyssey class Enterprise so quickly. We've seen Excelsiors, Miranda's and other ships serve for decades. It just doesn't make sense to decommission the Enterprise-F without a lot more information justifying that. This idea makes even less sense if they are recycling old Constitution variants and refitting them in the 25th century. That makes less sense than building a new vessel. So why wouldn't they just gut the Enterprise-F and fix whatever was wrong with it?
@KevinTheID
@KevinTheID Жыл бұрын
If they are indeed not really making use of the Enterprise-F and are essentially "skipping over it," I would be strangely okay with that. It isn't like that would be unprecedented either. We essentially skipped over both the Enterprise B and C because each of them only got one real appearance. Don't get me wrong though, I still think Star Trek has really gone off the deep end with this desire to bring back old ships to try and entice older fans back...which isn't working. Picard has honestly been a thematic mess and fundamentally hasn't made much sense in terms of the story or characters. That has turned fans off more than anything.

Not a fan of, basically any of the ship lore or just any of the content of Picard the show to be honest. It all feels very, surface level fan service? Like they grab things they heard fans like but didn't bother to understand them so its funhouse mirror stuff. Plus the Stargazer and Titan-A just rub me the wrong way in general.with unnecceraly convoluted backstorys and silly attampts to tie them back to older vessels. It was already silly when they did the letter treatment to the enterprise and it gets sillier with every ship they add to it with the Voyager and Titan.

Modern Star trek ship design is weird. A strange amalgamation of really old ships, bits of old ships, old ships that are suddenly new ships, and ships that are reused assets. I can’t really say I am a fan. And the Synth attack is still the dumbest thing ever in canon. Yes even dumber than the whale probe and how Spock came back to life. The life spans of the super modern and cutting edge Star Fleet ships are hilarious. 16 years is nothing

I really don’t think we should take the Picard show as canon, considering they don’t even know the difference between a refit and a successor. They literally don’t understand Star Trek, they should not be allowed to puppet it’s characters and universe like amateurs.

If my understanding is correct Leutennant is the first command rank that someone out of officer training will recieve. As such it makes sense that Saavik would go from being a cadet (midshipman in Royal Navy ranks) to a Leutenant in the space of time between Star Trek 2 and 3 (especially when you consider that at the start of Star Trek 2 she was taking the Kobyashi Maru test which is one of the final tests of Star Fleet officer training) and she would need a full rank for her transfer to USS Grissom. The reason why I am using RN rank structures here is that US rank structures would put too many bumps in the ranking structure for anything to make sense with regards to Saavik's rank. If you were to go by those terms, in order to become a Leutenant she would have to skip Ensign ranking. This could make sense if she had done something that saved the Enterprise but even then she would be more likely to recieve a medal.

Alternately, Saavik could have been a full LT prior to the events of ST II, and was back at the Academy for Command School (which the Beta canon lore has as a separate program in that era (see FASA).

To add to my earlier point: Personally treating a show you don't like as non-canon is fine and dandy. But, attempting to force that viewpoint on others is not going to work well. As for Paramount: I don't like Paramount. I don't like corporations in general. But, until Star Trek is owned by some other person or corporation or is (by some glorious miracle) brought into the public domain, they get the final say on what's canon in Star Trek. Most of the time, they'll respect the writers' decisions in regards to canon, but they have the power to override them. What we as fans believe to be canon is basically subjective. Nothing wrong with that, but can we not be angry targs over opinions, please?
@drksideofthewal
@drksideofthewal Жыл бұрын
@@gjshomeofsilliness9391 I'm certainly not trying to "force my opinion," to be clear, but Literary Canon has existed long before corporate IP and has traditionally been defined by... people. So, trying to "force" the world view that canon is only defined by corporate IP holders and there's nothing anyone can do about it, in my opinion, pernicious. Especially coming from the fans of a series about a moneyless society.

The designer mentioned its twice the size as the original Shangri-la class they concepted. I assume the refit is on a rebirthed hull but based on the working layout and form of the older ship? References to older tech could be because the mark iii constitution is from the tng era and still has the old coils with newer refit buzzard and such redesign.
