This video may stir some memories for those old enough to recall these radios in the early days of CB???
Enthusiastic Steve takes a look at 2 CB Radio giants, the legend that is the Cobra 148 radio and the stylish Stalker ix radio.
Hi when I started out in CB radio back in the 1970s their were 2 radios I lusted over but could never afford. Now over 40 years later I have managed to acquire 2 very nice original unspoilt radios.
In this video I will show you these radios, look at the other Cobra and Stalker radios available at that time, marvelous icons, the radios that many wanted but could not afford. Now they are becoming very rare and if you own any of these shown then you are very lucky indeed.

I only own two CB radios. Both are Cobra 148GTLs, the old ones with all the parts included. One is inside running the base station, and the other is in the Toyota! Maintained them all these years to factory specs. Best radio I know!

The Stalker was my first SSB radio and loved it, 2nd was the Cobra GTL DX was my second. Those were the days mate

Great video, I owned a 148 back in the 80s and I'm glad to say 40 years on I've just bought another cobra 148 MK1 it hopefully arrives tomorrow I'm really looking forward to it 🙂👍

@@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV hi Steve it's just arrived and it's totally original I think, channel 19 is 33 and the channel 9 switch is still channel 9 I'm trying to remember any other mods if you can think of any please message me cheers ste from st helens 👍🙂

On mine, the course clarifier used to alter the transmit frequency too (possibly modded). We called it the KC shift. Made it possible to match some frequencies with 27/81, although the channel numbers were different.

2 nice radios Steve, we had a pair of Cobra 148GTLdx’s back in the day both modified for the UK muppet’s band, Made my 1st DX contact on SSB to the US with the aid of a BRL200. Another poplar radio around our way at the time was the WKS1001 knew a few people who rated them over the 148. Always wanted a Hygain 5 personally just for the peewee Rodger bleep.

Great video. I have both these radios. I even had a stalker 15 and 20 for a bit. Blessed. Out of the 2, the stalker wins on ease of use and in my eyes looks ( I now have 3...) The cobra benefits from having a low band and an unlocked clarifier that hits the zeros. Thanks for the vid, dude!

I had a 148 GTLDX. I thought it was the Rolls Royce of CB until I got one and then I decided it was over rated! I think I preferred the Ham International radios, but maybe that's just because its what I had first. The Hygain V was unique with it's weird beep.

The correct comparison would be a 148 GTL-DX vs Stalker 9FDX.

Used to have a stalker 9 with a turner expander 500 the audio was excellent . Btw If you watch the first episode of Star Wars andor , 15 mins in there’s a turner expander 500 on one of the desks . The fx team have just put some flashing leds on it .

uniden supplied the PCBS for both so one was just as good as the other

The Cobra 148 did not have a brushed aluminium facia. The one you have there is a fake. The bezel is fom a Ranger radio imported by Cobraworzslops. If you look the flip switches are hard over to the left nearly rubbing the chrome. The facias were also imported laser cut and etched from brushed alloy. The Stalker is a better radio.
