Adam Fenix wasn't captured by the locust to study imulsion, he tried to destroy the lambent before e-day and then after his "death", he was sent to Azura under the control of the COG to study imulsion.

The novels explain that Adam Fenix wasnt captured by Locusts, they tried but the Chairman's secret guard, Rescued Adam and shipped him off to the secret island bunker of Azura.
