After living in Japan and knowing the wonder of the Washlet, I came home to the US and installed bidets on all my toilets. You can buy them on Amazon. I can’t live without one. I just bought a new house that has four toilets in it. I’ve only installed one bidet so far and now that’s the only toilet in the house I use.

It may sound gross to us today, but the medieval Japanese having the idea of using human stool as plant fertilizer is pretty brilliant, imo. Not just for keeping their cities clean, but economically too.

Watch the video on poop economy. Europeans had no use for it, they had animal dung, which was a much better choice for that use, and thus, human waste was a burden rather than a resource.

@@mediocreman6323 And night soil (human feces) can actually be a source of many parasitic infections too e.g Entamoeba dysentery, Giardiasis, cryptosporidium, tapeworms, roundworms etc. So using night soil isn't a great choice in endemic areas where sanitation is low.

Sorry but human stool atracts too many kind of parasites who lay their eggs in it.. Those parasites will go in to the vegitables your using the stool on. And If you eat the vegitables you will have those parasites inside your Body... Using human stool as fertilizer is a very bad Idea... Unless you want to die young because of parasites who eat you from the inside and cause lots of infectiones...

There is an interesting reason why Japanese (modern toilets that is) are often heated... Unlike most US/European Japanese houses have less insulation/individual room heating/air conditioning. So even if a bedroom has a heater on during the winter, the hallway and bathroom will get very chilly. It turns out sitting on a really cold toilet spikes both heart rate and blood pressure. For most people, in particular younger people this is no big deal, however, this does cause some (most elderly people) to have a heart attack. Thus the idea of heating a toilet seat in Japan came about.... If you ever climb a Japanese mountain (Mount Takao in west Tokyo is awesome) in winter getting to sit on a warm toilet when it is freezing is incredibly relaxing. Strange but definitely true
@Nirrrina
@Nirrrina 2 жыл бұрын
That actually makes a lot of sense. I also just found out I can't live there because fibromyalgia and cold DO NOT mix at all. Or at least mine doesn't. Before I got my radiant heater that keeps my apartment a steady 73-77 degrees I'd end up running enough heat that sometimes I'd wonder if my upstairs neighbors had much of a heating bill. Now I just heat where I am the most & wear my big onesies. Sure I look like an idiot dressed as a bright pink bunny from Christmas story. But at least I'm warm & got it on clearance.

1999: While in Japan I stayed with a teacher and her family in their 9 bedroom Japanese home. 3:18 we call this in German Donnerbalken (beam of thunder). We usually made them however out of two beams with a hole cut out in the middle and put them elevated to sit on. Later, a gut was added to reduce exposure to the elements (privacy was less of a concern back then). The door always had a hole (often heart shaped) which served several purposes: 1) as a door handle 2) to let in a little light 3) ventilation

If I have to choose between cleaning my butt with water or cleaning it with toilet paper after I had a nice #2, then I would definitely choose water. Here in Indonesia (at least in large cities and towns), people also love to clean their butt with water. Not all toilets have bidets/water sprays (well, public toilets generally do have), but they often have a small shower beside them, which you can use to clean your butt after a good #2. If you go to a small village/town, you would be very lucky if you find a ceramic squat toilet (don't expect much about hygiene). Otherwise, the only way that you can do to have a #2 is to go to the forest or a nearby river.

Hey. You left out the in-floor squat toilet; it was all the rage in the 50-60s when I lived there-and nemesis of visiting gaigen (sp?). It was adapted to both the traditional house with a in-house 'out-house' and flush toilets both public and private. They usually had a hand bar on the wall to help with balance. Those squat toilets were battling it out (and loosing) with the standard western style but I had seen them even in very nice restaurants. It was similar to a French toilet except the French one had built in foot placement; I used one of those as late as 2007; it was like balancing on rocks in a river to do your business. I use a Toto Washlet toilet seat I bought on Amazon and I can't imagine using anything else now. They were sold out during the toilet paper shortage. Surprise.

3:28 I'd love to use one of those water toilets but they're insanely expensive here. Sure, the little spray attachment is cheap but it requires an outlet and with my areas expensive electrician rates, high taxes, high permits, and high building standards you're looking at about $600 minimum for the outlet and then the price of the bidet or bidet attachment. The full on Japanese style toilets cost a fortune here too, my neighbor got a pretty basic one like he had back in Japan and it cost him around $1000 plus the cost of the installation of the toilet (a few hundred bucks) and the cost of the outlet (again, over $600). I know all this because I work construction and ive done a few of these.

This video was *educative* indeed. Well researched. Thank you Linfamy. New animation somethings are very good too. Also one more bad thing about that water spray toilets is, some of them(Idk if all have it) have a *little* pipe where the water comes. But that pipe sometimes is not that well designed. So it pokes to a sensitive area 😓. It is not comfortable.

Some Northern European countries also use water rather than toilet paper (usually by use of a mini shower head that attaches to the bathroom sink) and of course the bidet is a uniquely French innovation.

Enjoying watching all of your videos currently! I definitely have mixed feelings on toilets in Japan. The first time I encountered a heated toilet seat, I leapt off of it in shock - as someone from the Great Lakes, you just get used to that cold toilet seat in the winter. Furthermore, when I discussed this with friends we all thought the same thing. If the toilet seat is warm, you are sitting on it after someone used it for some time. What also threw me for a loop when I went there for work and later vacation was encountering the modern squat toilets which become unavoidable in less touristy areas or older establishments (Showa and before) e.g. Gifu, Nagoya and other smaller cities. Sometimes, you just gotta go, and I learned that wearing skirts made these encounters with the modern squat toilets a lot easier than with pants. Which really makes sense if you look at Japanese dress for most of their history. Skinny jeans are not your friends when it comes to squat toilets. >_

After living in Japan for a few years.. even I bought that mobile washlet for when I travel. Granted, back in my home country we have spray hose beside each toilet bowl so it was already the norm there to wash your butt with water more than wiping with tissue (we sometimes skip tissue because that's an extra cost; you have to pay for it in public toilets)

In Praise of Shadows delves into Japanese toilets quite heavily. I always hated western style bidets. They seemed like an unnecessary step but when I went to Tokyo I really fell in love with the all-in-one wash-let. I went at the end of summer and dealing with the heat was unpleasant but their loos felt like having a mini shower throughout the day and I felt amazing. I would really like one here but in London I think the hard water does not fill me with confidence that such an expensive loo will last very long when it's a constant battle with limescale on other less complex fixtures.
