There is a history about that. During WWII American soldiers visited French brothels and the brothels had bidets, and it was associated with a culture that was "dirty." So it was frowned upon or looked at with reproach. Funny... it keeps you more clean than toilet paper, but we didn't want to be associated with that "bidets" and it never was accepted or adopted here since. Backwards.

I went to a Japanese hotel in Manhattan for work- it was the only hotel available in the area. The concierge kept saying "each room comes with a smart toilet", but I didn't understand. I finally tried one out. After you go, there were 3 different cleaning cycles to choose from, sort of like a modern car wash. Also, you could choose "back" or "front", I assume the latter is for menstruating women (as a male I did not try). A little arm swings out under your butt, and proceeds to do a power wash. Even the gentle cycle was almost too much for me. After that, a tiny hair dryer swings out and dries everything up. No toilet paper needed.

Then there is the transportation of wood, processing it into paper, making it suitable for purpose (bleaching, chemicals) and then transporting it to the store (wrapped in plastic packaging) and then you having to go out and buy it... The tons of fuel burnt so you can wipe your butt is definitely greater than the toilet seat which should hopefully last for decades? Also, people don't realise that tissue and toilet paper actually contain micro plastics (aka cellulose), these go on to cause real problems for municipal filtering and likely end up in our drinking water / ecosystems anyway. The best thing about this episode is that it absolutely nails the awkwardness you feel when you try to explain why you wanted a bidet and then, after getting one, why it is such a massive life improvement. I started off thinking that I'd need TP for a final wipe, but it always came back completely clean, so I just started using the dryer instead. I haven't bought and will never buy TP again.
