Around E3 2017 we got a lot of information about Shadow of War. In this video I try to bring everything a bit up to date and have a look on the story and lore from the books' perspective. The main topics for this analysis and speculation video are: Carnen (Carnán), the probably not Entwive (but spirit of nature), the Balrog Tar Goroth and the question if Talion can defeat him, the Spider Lady, who might be Shelob (or not), the Blade of Galadriel, the elvish assassin Eltariel, necromancy + ghost army and a little explanation, why I make those lore comparison videos, when the game is not canon.
For all those points I again explain everything with the books' lore and story. Some parts were ofc already in the last video, but I update a bit or clarified things more based on the comments I got.
#LotR #Lore #explained
So basically this is an updated version of my last Tolkien's lore video, that you can find here:
• Who's that gothic lady...
The first lore comparison video, I often mention in the video, is this one:
• How does Shadow of War...
##### Update ####
Complete Shadow of War Lore Comparison:
• The Lore behind Shadow...
PS: This video contains a spoilers regarding the Lord of the Rings story and lore, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and Middle-earth: Shadow of War.
Also Spider Warning:
Skip when you reach 03:33 min to 08:18 min to skip all spider scenes.
I mention the spiders afterwards too, but don't show footage.

I just played Shadow of Mordor again for the 6th time and played celebrimbor story DLC apparently when celebrimbor stole the ring it started to change him making him more darker in his thinking Lady Galadriel even says that the ring could turn them into something far worse than Sauron and so Sauron even cursed him to be trapped in Mordor

Yes, they call her a nature or forest spirit as mentioned in the video. But Lore wise you could interpret an Ent also as a nature spirit. So I'm interested to see how exactly they resolve this. At least that is why I had the Ent section still in the video. Full quote from the Silmarillion (mentioned in the video): "Do then any of the Valar suppose that I did not hear all the Song, even the least sound of the least voice? Behold! When the Children awake, then the thought of Yavanna will awake also, and it will summon spirits from afar, and they will go among the kelvar and the olvar, and some will dwell therein, and be held in reverence, and their just anger shall be feared. For a time: while the Firstborn are in their power, and while the Secondborn are young." PS: I was working on this video for some days. So yesterday I edited pretty much all day till late in the night :D

That's interesting. Yes that would fit very well. As said, when ever the term spirits from afar is mentioned in Lord of the Rings (as for the creation of the Ents), it can mean a lot of things. Ungoliant is also one of those spirit entities. They can be very powerful and it#s discussed that they maybe are Maiar. But they seem to look more at Tom Bombadil (a mystery) and Goldberry (also some kind of nature spirit entity).

This makes me sad. For too long have I wanted to help Tree-beard find the ent wives
@fantasywind3923

Well the Ents are foremost a race of beings that live and multiply as other creatures (as there are males and females and they had children), though of course the "spirits from afar" were sent to give them independent life. While some fans often like to assume that some mysterious entities are Ainur, I think that the spirits in this case were more like souls similar to those of other races. Also Ents while they have some sort of roughly understood "magical" abilities, especially in affecting the growth of plants (Entwives especially, but Treebeard in book showed interesting ability in making magical lights), but they do not shapeshift. "Treebeard lifted two great vessels and stood them on the table. They seemed to be filled with water; but he held his hands over them, and immediately they began to glow, one with a golden and the other with a rich green light; and the blending of the two lights lit the bay; as if the sun of summer was shining through a roof of young leaves. Looking back, the hobbits saw that the trees in the court had also begun to glow, faintly at first, but steadily quickening, until every leaf was edged with light: some green, some gold, some red as copper; while the tree-trunks looked like pillars moulded out of luminous stone." It would have been interesting if it was an Entwife, (a first appearance of one in adaptation would be nice) but now we know it's not the case. It's unclear what the spirit is supposed to be: a lesser Ainu or something unique like Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, but considering the might of Sauron, it doesn't bode well for it's fate :). Sauron can affect forces of nature in many ways, his corrupting influence is enough to taint the land itself.

On Carnán (the nature Spirit probably not an Entwive): The last Monolith/official Shadow of War livestream was yesterday. I worked on this video for some days and edited them during the last 2 days. So This information is not included. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJ1peMtozp7aoHU.html But I basically say the same, without knowing. The Director also says: he thinks she is not an Entwife. But as mentioned in the video, Ents are also spirits from afar, created to protect the forests. So basically nature spirits. But I also argue against her being an Ent in the video. For a time: while the Firstborn are in their power, and while the Secondborn are young." Corrections: Her name is Carnán (Carnan) not Carnen (like the river Carnen = red water). That could mean red valley in Sindarin I guess. But in the stream the director explains, that her name (her self too I guess) is related to the Celtic horned god Cernunnos.

Great video! About the ghosts, do you think there might be some connection to Minas Morgul? I know it was known as the City of the Dead and occupied by the Witch King for a while, but I'm not sure if there is any mention of necromancy surrounding it.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
When it comes to necromancy the Witchking of Angmar could most likely communicate with the dead. He also summoned the Barrow-wights (evil spirits) to the Barrow-downs. Being one of the most powerful servants of Sauron. He could also wield and maybe even create a Morgul-knife, I guess. So when the Witchking is involved, there is for sure some potential for necromancy, even though it's relative limited or cost much power, else they would have used it far more during he War of the Ring. PS: Also thank you for commenting =) Also (This is a little spoiler): Spoiler: Minas Ithil seen in the game, will become Minas Morgul, after The Witchking and Sauron conquer it around Third Age 2002 (The Hobbit plays ~940 years later). So in the game, they delayed this event for about 940+ years. But to fit seamless into the story, Minas Ithil has to become Minas Morgul, the City of the Witchking.

The developers of the game said that the writing on the ring is a huge spoiler. So they put gibberish in the "CG trailer" and the "In Game Trailers" to hide it.

That's interesting. Never heard that before. Esp. since the writing can be deciphered to a part of this text (from SoM) shadowofmordor.wikia.com/wiki/Ithildin Very interested to see, what's written on it, when the game comes out. PS (from the future): The Text on the ring did not change on release of SoW. So it's gibberish, but if you type the letters in and change the font, it says "redeem the (l)and of Shadow..."
@stewb1409

Maybe I misunderstood it when playing, but Celebrimbor is what keeps Talion from dying by inhabiting his body. In the trailer for Shadow of War we see Talion laying dying calling for Celebrimbor before the ring jumps onto his hand, then he miraculously gets up. From this you can conclude that Talion is kept alive by the power of the ring once Celebrimbor goes missing after forging it. So there's no way he can be without one of either Celebrimbor or the ring. This could be the bargain from her to get the ring - you need him , so give me the ring in exchange. Which would tie into him not having the ring at the Nazgul fight - having to go away to regroup then encountering the Nazgul while still weakened and needing Eltariel aid. Then he goes onto getting his ring back after that, which may involve the Balgrog fight if he really doesn't have it there. So much to guess :S

Ah, yes, - sorry I must have missed that one. If this is just the prologue, then it's gonna be fun. However I guess it'll be like Udun in Shadow Of Mordor - a starting area before the real fun begins and she'll be the equivalent of The Hammer in terms of story progression.

@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks =) Glad you enjoy my content. He would definitely rank very high. The ability, that death has no impact on him is huge. This is so to say beyond Maiar level. Alone with this he would just win every fight at some point (battle of attrition). Of cause, he probably lacks other abilities, like manipulating environment, knowledge, diplomacy and so on. But when he is immortal, he can catch up on some of those at some point. The ability to dominate other creatures, like orcs, is definitely evil, but would allow him to build huge armies too. It's an interesting idea for a video, but I would wait until I know more about Shadow of War. I think we will get more information there on what he can do and what not.

thats actualy already a problem. considerin all movies(and i mean all movies not just lord of the rings movies but every movie ever created) if it is based on a book its always different from the books simply because it is another form of media you can explain some stuff in books that you cant do in the same fashion in movies simply because reasons they aspect gets even more aperant when going from a book or a movie to a game you see when its from book to movie its a problem but not that big of a problem because although everyone thinks different things when seeing a specific movie scene or reading a specific chapter in a book the thing the read or see is the same so its the same product because they both are a none flexible/interactive medium but things get crazy when we go to game simply because its an interactive medium its like glueing a poster of your favorite movie to a set of gear wheels when the thing moves it tears the whole poster apart because a poster is meant for a static medium such as a wall or maybe a shelf etc but a chunk of gears is moveable each piece moves on its own its the same with games based on movies/games and the less liniar a game gets the worse the problem gets. if its a verry liniar game that problem is almost none existent because you dont have any options to alter the story but shadow of mordor for example you had lots of options you could decide what order to do the missions in etc also a big thing is that the games were not made by tolkien and he didnt explain 100% of all stories of middle earth he simply couldnt because the universe was so complex that he probably couldnt think about everything him self let alone write it all down etc thats why the games might conflict with lore he created. thats why you shouldnt see such games as set in the main universe, think of it as an alternative universe with similiar events, some events might be the same some others might be different int a big way
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 6 жыл бұрын
That is ofc true. But the problem is, that the game is sometimes not very plausible story wise within the world of Lord of the Rings. E.g. I like the movies in the extended cut. There are also a lot of changes, but they are not so extreme. Also the game was marketed as very lore friendly.

At one point the developers referred to the pale woman as the Lady of Spiders. Seeing as Shelob means "female spider" it seems like too much of a coincidence for them not to be one and the same. As far as fitting seamlessly into lore, I think it fits fine into the Jackson-Movie-verse (which has its own history of condensing the timeline). The setting makes it familiar enough to be enjoyable without braking the suspension of disbelief.

ThePhilosophersGames, was the books very similar to the movies at all? Or were they totally different? I don't really know.. THAT is why I asked.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
That's a question hard to answer. The book have more characters and details. I can understand that you have to make compromises, when you have only 3-4 hours to tell a story (I personally like the Extended Cut far more, the shorter version misses so many details). But there are a lot of differences. For example the Elf Glorfindel saves Frodo, after he gets stabbed by that Morgul knife at the Weathertop in the books. In the movies it's Arwen and Glorfindel is not mentioned. or Éomer is fused with a character called Erkenbrand. And a lot more. Also with the book The Silmarillion, which is background story the book for Lord of the Rings (the don't have movie rights for that) Lord of the Rings become so much depth. That is lost in the movies. But overall the movies tell you story of Lord of the Rings. At least the biggest things are in there. But many references are a bit lost. Like Elrond's brother's bloodline (he decided as a half-elf to be a mortal men) is also the bloodline of Kings of Gondor and Arnor (including Aragorn). So with marrying Arwen these bloodlines reunite again. And many more things. I have to admit, that I like the movies (in the extended edition), because I can understand most of the changes, they probably had to make. J.R.R. Tolkien never thought it was possible to make a Lord of the Rings movie. That is also a reason, why he sold a license to a film company (only for The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings).

Shelob has magical powers as well. Especially in the school of Illusions. And yes the light of Galadriel was made long ago.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 6 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. There are some implications in the book, that she can also make webs of shadow and probably has some telepathic abilities. So yes you could interpret it as illusion magic, but the extend of was definitely increased. I assume they will fuse parts of Shelob's and Ungoliant's backstory together. The only "light" artifact of Galadriel I know of would be her phial with the light of the star of Eärendil. It could be, that the game's artifact had a connection to it.
@fantasywind3923
@fantasywind3923 7 жыл бұрын
Regarding giant spiders of Shelob's brood (but i'm still angry that in game they are at best pocket sized, they should be larger, at least the size of Mirkwood spiders that caught Dwarves and Bilbo) they are living in Mordor, in the Mountains of Shadow and further in the Black Land, as this quote has it: "Far and wide her lesser broods, bastards of the miserable mates, her own offspring, that she slew, spread from glen to glen, from the Ephel Dúath to the eastern hills, to Dol Guldur and the fastnesses of Mirkwood. But none could rival her, Shelob the Great, last child of Ungoliant to trouble the unhappy world." So it can be understood that while she lives alone in her lair (maybe she prefers it that way), her children live also all over Mordor borders and further inland (Mountains of Shadow and 'eastern hills' clearly indicates a large area). Because she slew some of her 'mates' with whom she procreated it does not mean that there are no more of giant spiders scattered all around the Black Land. Both whether we speak of the 'nature spirit' and Ents or spider kind we come upon a deeper lore problem, when the spirits take on physical form and procreate their offspring usually does not have the ability to change form and their power slowly diminishes with each next generation further removed from the progenitor. The only child of a Maia and an Elf, Luthien Tinuviel that we know of had no shapeshifting in truest sense, but her powers allowed for taking skin of certain creatures to assume their form for a while. The elf assassin well here I'm not that good in linguistic stuff, but from lore perspective it's hard to expect this random elf to be able to fight Nazgul even with a special artifact (besides sending assassin by Galadriel is as far from her methods as possible), not to mention she has no chance of killing Nazgul or dealing with Rings of Power in any way (besides the fact that it is even impossible to get the Nine Rings or remaining three of the Seven since Sauron himself has them), her mission from book lore perspective is very poor thought through. Even if she is as powerful as the ancient Noldor or even by some miracle on the power level of Glorfindel, her mission would eventually be doomed since even Glorfindel himself would be in deep trouble: "I think, Elrond, that in this matter it would be well to trust rather to their friendship than to great wisdom. Even if you chose for us an elf-lord, such as Glorfindel, he could not storm the Dark Tower, nor open the road to the Fire by the power that is in him." Besides presence of someone this powerful would certainly attract attention of Sauron himself and that would be unwise. Unless of course her mission has nothing to do with Nazgul but with Talion/Celebrimbor in particular, still it gives a strange vibe as if developpers forced in this character so she could be major-but-previously unknown great power, but the case is power of Elves during War of the Ring is not it's used to be and the number of truly mighty ones from the Elder Days diminishes as time goes by. Though maybe the game itself will show a different picture. As for her artifact, well here I notice some similarity to Frodo's gift, the Phial of Galadriel that contains a fracture of light of Earendil (and in turn of a Silmaril), it's power was able to strengthen the user, bolstering his will, repel dark creatures, even dispel magical barriers formed by enchanted statues Silent Watchers/Two Watchers at Cirith Ungol, possibly it could do more. Still such gifts are used sparingly and it's hard to imagine Galadriel giving up things like that on regular basis, though we'll see in the end how big the actual importance of the character will be. About the source material adaptation I disagree with notion that canon lore restricts freedom or creativity. I think it is possible to make a truly lore friendly game without major alterations and still give room to many new interesting ideas. It's actually strange to think of Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War as adaptation at all, since in many ways it seems more like it disregards some foundations and rules of the universe for sake of 'rule of cool' so to speak :). Besides it's not clearly a book adaptation, it's a strange mish mash of ideas, mostly based on movies (that already made huge alterations especially The Hobbit movies) with some book elements thrown in in very small dose, well first game seems to be most obvious, it is deeply rooted in movie portrayal so naturally it has not the same feel as books have. The most jarring thing is the lack of certain...sophistication in language, Tolkien was a true master with words, he could write casual speech style of Hobbits, high and lofty and more 'epic' style of nobility, or low harsh style of speech of Orcs. In games language seems modernized, but maybe it's the fault of voice acting that fails to deliver the lines in meaningful way, that's my impression naturally.

Thanks again for you long post. Nice read as always =) Yes the Spiders are small. I hoped for a mount :D Yes you are right, when I red the Shelob part in Lord of teh Rings for preparation, I also stumbled upon this quote. I always interpret: "[...]her own offspring, that she slew, spread from glen to glen, from the Ephel Dúath to the eastern hills, to Dol Guldur and the fastnesses of Mirkwood" as this being their path of escape (and don't take the spread by word). So from the Ephel Dúath a bit east and north, over to the Wall of Rohan (Emyn Muil) maybe some even over the eastern regions north of Mordor to Rhûn and then over to Dol Guldur. Ofc that is not written there. Just my imagination. I think I worded it in most cases quite carefully in the video. ("so I'm not sure if there are more spiders left in Mordor"), except for one. In the end we only know for sure one place where her offspring lives and this is Mirkwood. But I guess there is so much space in Mordor and the surrounding mountains, that it's likely, that we will find more bigger spiders there. That is a very good quote =) And I think many people don't understand this, esp. the extreme difference in tone. Agreed, it really is nor an adaption. I always think, that the idea for the game's mechanics were there far before, they even knew, it would be a game taking place on Middle-earth. Like with Ultima Underworld back in the day. Was never intended to be an Ultima game originally. I know that you disagree with me here :D And I see your point. I also believe it would be possible to be extremely close to the lore and still make a good game. But it#s unlikely we will ever get this - sadly. But when it comes to games, for me game mechanics are always more important, than story. And I like, what they did in Shadow of Mordor mechanically (for sure there is still room for improvement) and can ignore the story lore problems. But ofc if it would be extremely close to the lore + the tone of the books and had amazing game mechanics, that would be even better. But I think SoM and SoW don't want to be that game.

I forget where but from what I've researched the markings of the ring mean and say, "I will redeem the land of shadow".
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. It is part of these Shadow of Mordor verses. In the video I only show a short part of it, to explain how it's done. The Symbols are from the elvish Lord of the Rings writing system called Tengwar i.imgur.com/LLFBoTr.png (Don't know if you can see this, i have the font installed) redeem the and of Shadow If you take this table: tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Tengwar#Spelling_and_Pronunciation and transfer the letters to our Latin writing system (or how we would pronounce it, written in our system), you get something like: vfshfflh mif chwsh whzh thichshwhb Which makes no sense. But if you download the Tengwar font and write it down with your keyboard, so what is on the wring is in your writing program. And then mark this and change the font to a normal font of our writing system (like Times New Roman), than you can read: redeem the and of Shadow The L is missing. So it's english, written with the assumption, that the e.g. elvish tengwar letter representing "e" is also on the "e" key on the keyboard. But it's not. The "e" symbol (Yanta) is on the L key. And so this generates: vfshfflh mif chwsh whzh thichshwhb I think it should mean (I will) redeem the (L)and of Shadow. But it's either encrypted or a mistake. It's also in english, not in Sindarin or Quenya. A bit strange for an elvish ring.
@Markis2bi4
@Markis2bi4 7 жыл бұрын
Given how close it is, I'll take a chance and say that my guess, and your translation of the phrase, is correct. In context it makes sense; Celebrimbor and his family lived within Mordor, and it looked as if it was peaceful enough... Until Sauron decided to be a massive black, burning, butthead and invade and kill the Elves present. By defeating Sauron in Mordor the Ring Maker would in essence "redeem" it of the evil that controls it. But we'll see if this deathless hero duo will "live" long enough to see themselves become the villain(s).
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
Oh I should have clarified: the text makes sense. But the choice of the letters makes no sense, when you read it as elvish letters, expecting an elvish language. It's like setting your font to a Japanese font and write something in english, as you would typing english on your keyboard, but (so to say random) Japanese letters appear instead. Some one from Japan would wonder, what is written there, even though you could decipher it back into the corresponding english letters. Celebrimbor and his family (in the books he has no wife and no daughter) lived in Eregion, that is north-west of Isengard. I think Mount Doom (Orodruin or Amon Amarth) was created in the First Age by Sauron's master Morgoth. So I guess Mordor was a dark place for a very long time. But I think he wants to redeem Mordor (meaning the Dark or Black Land) from Sauron. You can find that phrase on the Ithildin in Shadow of Mordor: shadowofmordor.wikia.com/wiki/Ithildin

haha No, I have to admit, that this is quite in-depth. I red it in a forum or on reddit + the notion that it's a phrase, we find in Shadow of Mordor and I actually took the time and checked the letters myself for the video I made in March. I think only few people will actually notice. And it doesn't matter at all. If you do videos like this, you most likely spent a lot of time doing research - at least I do. So I have a little advantage here. If I need like 10 days to make a lore video, almost half of it is just research. And even then, there are still a few little mistakes in it. It's also good to think and make your own theories.

I would say that these games are inspired by (rather then based on) the works of Tolkien and thus make room for manipulation of the the lore. They are like two separate universes- one where the games take place and the other which is Tolkiens original vision. And there is nothing wrong with it. But claiming that these games take place in the same timeline as the books although the games take so many liberties with the source material and have quite a lot of lore inconsistencies is downright silly.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 6 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. The games definitely play in another "universe", that is probably more related to the movie universe (Middle-earth Enterprises, who only have the movie rights for Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, is involved). (I hope, I understand your comment correctly) But my intention was not to claim, that they play in the same universe, but to just explain the differences and lore references between both. Because it's is still related (I like your term inspired) to the source material and SoM and SoW was even marketed as lore friendly. It's also fun to make those videos. If you are interested, this is the the (new) complete (and quite detailed) lore comparison I made after SoW release, it's quite long: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5OXqbVoztWumnU.html

I just copy the answer I wrote to some one else on this matter.

No the Phial goes to Frodo :) Quote from Lord of the Rings: ‘And you, Ring-bearer,’ she said, turning to Frodo. ‘I come to you last who are not last in my thoughts. For you I have prepared this.’ She held up a small crystal phial: it glittered as she moved it, and rays of white light sprang from her hand. ‘In this phial,’ she said, ‘is caught the light of Ea¨rendil’s star, set amid the waters of my fountain. It will shine still brighter when night is about you. May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out. Remember Galadriel and her Mirror!’ Maybe it's different in the movies? But I think Sam gets the elven rope there? In the books Sam's gift is a little box: ‘For you little gardener and lover of trees,’ she said to Sam, ‘I have only a small gift.’ She put into his hand a little box of plain grey wood, unadorned save for a single silver rune upon the lid. ‘Here is set G for Galadriel,’ she said; ‘but also it may stand for garden in your tongue. In this box there is earth from my orchard, and such blessing as Galadriel has still to bestow is upon it.

Once again, nice work. I bet you've answered it in another video, but how did Celebrimbor and Sauron became close? Supposing that Celebrimbor is a distant cousin of Galadriel, would he make a ring to her and at the same time create an evil ring that controls the 9 to Sauron? Was Celebrimbor unaware of the intent of the Sauron?
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
Sauron just visited Ost-in-Edhil (the capital) in Eregion. He introduced himself as Annatar and changed to a fair from before. He maybe also said, that he is an emissary of the Valar, like the Istari (the Wizzards (also Maiar) and later even Glorfindel) who came thousand years later to help Middle-earth in their fight against Sauron. Celebrimbor did not know it was Sauron. When all 16 rings + his secret 3 elven rings were done, Sauron finished his one Ring and all the elves wearing the rings knew, that it was Sauron and took the rings from their fingers. Even though Celebrimbor and esp. Galadriel were wary before. Celebrimbor out of fear what could be coming, sent 2 elven rings to Gil-Galad and one to Galadriel (who has left Eregion to live in Lorien) to keep them safe. But all elves with rings knew, that it was Sauron and about the One Ring, when it was finished. It was important, that Sauron does not get all of the rings, because they were still powerful. PS. Thanks for commenting =)
@Rodrigo220898
@Rodrigo220898 7 жыл бұрын
So there were actually 5 elven rings? 3 in the beggining which were taken off due to Sauron's plans and 2 other replacements given to Gilgalad and Galadriel? I assume the other ring was for Elrond, does he not have a ring?
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
Oh I wrote that a bit misleading. No Only 3 elven rings total. Vilya, Narya and Nenya. And they were made in secret. When the One Ring revealed the evil intention of Sauron, he gave these 3 rings Vilya, Narya and Nenya away, because they were more powerful and Sauron was on his way to Eregion with a giant army to conquer middle earth. He gave 1to galadriel and I think 2 to High King of the Noldor elves Gil-galad. Gil-galad gave one to Círdan (or it was directly sent to him, both were in the same realm). I think some time before the last Alliance between elves and men (centuries later) Gil-galad gave his ring to Elrond (who also could have become High King after Gil-galads death, same with Galadriel I guess). During the Senond Age they could not wear the rings, because Sauron still hat the One Ring.

No problem. Thanks for commenting :D Oh I forgot. The wise shipwright Círdan recognized Gandalf (when he arrived in Círdan's realm Mithlond, the Grey Havens) as one of the Istari sent by the Valar. So he gave his ring to Gandalf, knowing he would need it much more than he did. Quote: Take this ring, Master,’ he said, ‘for your labours will be heavy; but it will support you in the weariness that you have taken upon yourself. For this is the Ring of Fire, and with it you may rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill. But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores until the last ship sails. It's sad that Chris Tolkien refuses the movie rights to the silmarillion. I can understand that he wants to keep his fathers greatest work untouched in any form since it's truly is an amazing world J R.R Tokien has created. But so many people love The Hobbit and LOTR. Many people have read the books but I think even more have seen the movies. To make movies off of the silmarillion woud introduce so many people to the world I think. To simply show how the world we know and love was built on the big screen. To show Morgoth and all of his follwers against these incredible heroes in the first age. I mean so many people love this world but don't like books or have the time to read. Many different reasons to why they never read the books (myself included). Let me know of your opinion. P.S Great channel keep up the awesome work. You have tought me a lot of the 1st and 2nd age.

Thank you :) Yes, I know what you mean. The Silmarillion gives - in my opinion - Lord of the Rings so much depth, it's just an amazing addition - but it's sometimes also a bit hard to read. So I understand, that there is an audience for more movies about e.g. the First Age. The problem I see is, that the movies somewhat missing depth and since the Silmarillion is far less fleshed out, the movie makers would have to fill some gaps in the material. I maybe sound a bit antiquated or grumpy, but my trust in e.g. Hollywood making good blockbuster movies is a bit "shattered". I know that under a lot of Tolkien fans the movies are not that well received. I personally like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy in the Extended Edition - at least I understand a lot of the changes and see the effort. But I'm not the biggest fan of the Hobbit though. But yes it has some appeal to see written fiction becoming a movie. But ofc in an ideal world, it would be amazing. I think the Silmarillion has some awesome stories.

Yes I get what you mean and it's the same for me when it comes to the movies. I truly just love the LOTR movies. Some minor issues here and there but that's expected. When it comes to The Hobbit......well no. Way too much CGI and lacking in story. And Smaug's death was a major let down. We can only hope that one day there will be movies from the Silmarillion and that they are put in the right hands. A good example for a Silmarillion movie cold be the fall of Numenor or Beleriand. The battle of Eregion and the rings could be great too.

This is a very tricky region. A part of me says, don't touch the Silmarillion, it is at least for me the holiest book of the entire series, don't destroy it. Let the fans keep it. One book for the Tolkien fans untouched, under the sky. The other part says it would definitely bring a lot more exposure to the Silmarillion and I think an overall appreciation which it thoroughly deserves. At least way more than those hacked game of thrones stuff.

@ThePhilosophersGames

Quote from the Silmarillion: Fëanor was surrounded, with few friends about him. Long he fought on, and undismayed, though he was wrapped in fire and wounded with many wounds; but at the last he was smitten to the ground by Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, whom Ecthelion after slew in Gondolin. He was still killed by Gothmog. He was also not fighting alone, even though he and his few allies were outnumbered. It is not clearly stated, how many Balrogs he fought at once or how the fight went. Also this day no Balrog died and finally he was slain/smitten by Gothmog. How this exactly happened, is subject to our own fantasy and interpretation. My point is: even Fëanor, the most powerful elf (whet ever that means), who has ever lived, was defeated by Balrogs and finally killed by Gothmog. Ecthelion killed Gothmog (probably the most powerful one). Glorfindel killed a Balrog too. But both died too in that battle.

Eltariel is probably there to please the SJW's so that they do not cause trouble. I would not pay too much attention to her origins and all. Anyways, I think they confirmed the spider to be Shelob, but it could have been Ungoliant, since the entire game is basically fan fiction, we can drag it. I will go with your theory about Ungoliant but I would say that when the idk "bright" ring was created it probably would contain light from the two trees or some power of the Silmari, if the One ring contains a part of Sauron's soul, this ring should contain some kind of powerful element. Ungoliant now heavily weakened feels the bright ring and moves in to consume the ring. The ring might also enable her to change her form. She took the form of a spider and maybe she can change it with the ring's power. I think she probably would take the ring away in Mount Doom itself.

Just simply doing what the purpose of what this video is all about, pointing out differences while being indifferent but giving credit where credit is due. Is it just me or does this game look pretty lacking with it's visuals? It barely looks any better than the first one. Hopefully this is because they're concentrating on the story, how it's presented, and epic large scale battles

As a passionate fan of Tolkien's books, it's ofc sometimes hard to hold back the passion ^^ Personally I would love a bit more "connection" to the source material at times. But still I think the first game was great. Yes agreed, it looks not much better. There was also some discussion about the animation quality, but we probably have to see how it is in the final product - if I remember correctly they also delayed the release. On the plus side, it will probably run well on a lot of machines when it comes to PC, but ofc it would be nice to see more improvements when it comes to graphical fidelity. But I agree, as long they nail the big battles and presentation I don't care too much too. Hopefully it will be good.

From what I've seen it looks pretty good, I've stayed away from most official videos or info about it (besides it's release date) so hype doesn't make the time pass more slowly. I haven't read any of the books and I've only seen the movies so these vids help me get a better understanding of the source material's lore. Haha I didn't even realize Sauron was such a beautiful Elf until playing the game, if it weren't for the eyes I'd say he's almost Angelic looking. Reminds me of the stories about Lucifer. Edit: So it was confirmed that Shelob isn't portrayed as a beautiful woman in this? I hope she isn't, when I first heard about that it I was pretty disappointed
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 6 жыл бұрын
Angelic is a very good analogy. Sauron is one of the Maiar (spirit beings) and you could say those are angels (of lower rank). They can in theory take any form they want. Gandalf and the other Wizards e.g. chose those of old men, when they came to Middle-earth. And ofc Sauron could also change his form. He once took the form of a giant wolf, but also that of a bad and later a very fair form and introduced himself as Lord of Gifts (Annatar) send by the Valar. Sauron was corrupted by (the Vala) Morgoth (the Valar are spirit being of higher rank, but maybe more comparable to a god pantheon). So the Lucifer analogy is fitting too, but you could argue, that it fits more to Sauron's master Morgoth. Spoiler: It seems, that the woman is Shelob. There is a reveal trailer and it's about that woman.

Wow, I don't think the movies ever made any references to Sauron being anyrhing more than a powerful Elf and if they did I must've missed it, same goes for Gandolf and the other Wizards. I'd always assumed he was human but at the same time I've wondered how he's lived so long, I've always just brushed it off as an effect of his Wizadry. I've either missed some big details or the movies just completely left it out, either way thanks for the info. It definitely adds more to their characters and makes Sauron even more interesting than before, the movies seem to do him an injustice
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the movies don't really reference the nature of the Istari (the 5 Wizards) that much, maybe because only few people actually knew, what they truly were. They were send in disguise and not allowed to reveal their true divine nature and power, because they should aid the people of middle-earth and not lead them or fight for them. They were advisers helping against the corruption of Sauron (and Morgoth). Another interesting note is, that Sauron in the movies (Black Armor, Corwn and mace) looks like Morgoth. Sauron is not really well described visually. In the Third Age we know he is a bit taller than a human, but no giant, he has black skin, he is missing a finger and he can't take a fair form, so he is terrible to look at. Tolkien made a sketch once: tolkiengateway.net/wiki/File:J.R.R._Tolkien_-_Sauron.jpg Btw. I made this video about Sauron's story, if you are interested: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtiIZ7qozKjZqXU.html But the first 28:00 minutes are really confusing (it's also very long). The First Age is a really complex topic. It gets less confusing during the Second and Third Age. I usually recommend to people who get lost after some minutes to skip the First Age and read this summary instead: - Morgoth/Melkor influences Elves (when they awake, first appear on Middle-earth) - Valar try to help the elves - Elves go to Beleriand to travel to the other continent Aman - Some elves stay in Beleriand and found a kingdom (Doriath) - Elf Fëanor crafts extremely powerful artifacts - Melkor/Morgoth steals artifacts - Fëanor goes insane with his sons and they swore an oath - They kill other elves to steal their ships and sail back to Middle-earth (First Kinslaying) - Then 20 different things happen and a lot of elves die - Human Beren and Elf/Maia Lúthian retrieve one artifact on a crazy quest, which is the condition for Beren to marry Lúthien - And years later Fëanor's sons again kill their own people to get the Artifact back because of their Oath, but still fail (2nd and 3rd Kinslaying) - Other elves (mainly Teleri elves) are not happy with Fëanor's sons (over the time, starting with Beren's and Lúthien's Quest) - The other Kingdom called Gondolin gets destroyed too and then a giant war (War of Wrath) with Valar and Dragons breaks out which Morgoth/Melkor loses at the end - In between all of this Sauron is active and tons of other things happen.

Maybe the sword of galadriel is galadriels daughter
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 6 жыл бұрын
Galadriel in deed has a daughter with Celeborn. Her name is Celebrían and she is the wife of Elrond and mother of Arwen. I thought about it too, but I think it's unlikely that she has a second daughter, but ofc they could invent one. We will see. PS: Celebrían left Middle-earth Third Age 2509, so she is not around at the time around the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, which plays 400-500 years later. Also thank you for the comment :D

@ThePhilosophersGames

Good question. I think the Galadriel love part is not cannon and was an early concept of Tolkien, that never made it into the main books (it is explained in the Unfinished Tales). It's maybe also a testament of Sauron's ability to manipulate. He was called Sauron the Deceiver for a reason.

Could a dragon fight and defeat a balrog?
@cursedkei66
@cursedkei66 7 жыл бұрын
In the Silmarillion, the Dragons could hold back the Host of Valinor itself. (which included the Valar) So theoretically, the mightiest of their kind could contest the Balrogs. However most of the greatest dragons of old are dead and Smaug himself (the greatest dragon of the third age) is debatably comparable to only an average sized dragon from the first age.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. There were some scary dragons once, like Glaurung (father of Dragons) and Ancalagon probably the greatest of the Dragons (Smaug was e.g much smaller compared to Ancalagon; there is no exact data about their size only theories), but they are all dead. Could be an interesting match. Still I would probably bet on the Balrog.
@Markis2bi4

If we're going to be technical about it, then I would clarify that Smaug was more great wyvern than a full dragon, anatomically speaking. Were there any "good" dragons, or were they simply selfish, solitary predators?
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
Smaug is described as the last of the fire breathing dragons. They were created by Sauron's master Morgoth (a Vala), to help him in his War of Wrath (First Age) against the creation of Eru and the other Valar. So I would say they are born out of an evil intent. Not sure how strong their connection to Morgoth is though, esp. since he was banned into the "void".

Yes it looks like it :D (I recorded that before the last Monolith stream) The director said, he does not think that she is an Ent. Lore-wise Ents are also some kind of (nature) spirits. But they'll go more into the direction of Goldberry and her mother, I guess.

What would happen if Sauron regain the ring of power first thing he threw when she gets his physical form back is form fucking gauntlets that can't be chopped in half by a sword I mean swords aren't supposed to cut through plate armor to begin with so that was total bullshit in The Lord of the Rings
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 6 жыл бұрын
The depiction in the films and games differ from the books. Sauron is not really described, but his appearance in the movies is that of his Master Morgoth. Sauron did not wear an armor. Also the sword (Narsil) was not just a regular sword, it was a very special sword. In Tolkien's letters we can read: Narsil is a name composed of 2 basic stems without variation or adjuncts: √NAR 'fire', & √THIL 'white light'. It thus symbolised the chief heavenly lights, as enemies of darkness, Sun (Anar) and Moon (in Q) Isil. I think if he had the One Ring, his victory would be close or at least the War would have been even more devastating.

ThePhilosophersGames I'm here to clarify something that you said earlier in the video about how celebrimbor in the original context was nice and kind and stuff will you have to remember in this alternate reality celebrimbor War the one ring for time after infusing apart from self into it to give him some control but the Rings still has a will of its own so why he would have used it to reclaim Mordor it's what's them slowly corrupting his mind into a wrathful vengeful person and why he didn't go two elf heaven when he died is because Sauron as punishment trapped them in the dimension Between Worlds where he Wonder as a spirit until he found a vessel that he could use to reclaim his vengeance

And at the end of the game when the curse was broken celebrimbor could have left whenever he wanted and go back to elf heaven but Talion and convinced him to stay and fight against the armies of Sauron so with the knowledge Sovereign granted them on how to forge a ring of power though vastly weaker than sauron's on the ring and because both Italian and

Why can't the creators just state that both Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War take place in the movie universe? Like come on it's kind of obvious due to the stuff we see in both games.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, they avoid saying this. For example when asked about if the game's are canon, they said they worked together with Tolkien Enterprises (or now Middle-earth Enterprises), but this company only has the movies and marketing license. It's not the Tolkien Estate (Tolkien family who has all the rights). There are even some lawsuits going on between those (e.g. if video games are included in the license). Maybe that's the reason why they can't talk to much about it. Esp. the time line compression is very reminiscent of the movies. But ofc they included a lot of background story into their game, which must be difficult, because they don't have rights for the Silmarillion.

I know being a Tolkien fan means we have to get bent out of shape when something doesn't adhere strictly to the lore but this is a fucking video game. Who cares how closely it sticks to a made up mythology? Shadow of Mordor is a fantastic game that had nothing to do with any of the stories J.R.R. Tolkien wrote. It was just a fun game with a Tolkien skin and that's good enough for me.

I agree. I like SoM. But I think it's interesting to look at the differences. Esp. when they market it as lore "friendly". But that does not make it a bad game.

I don't really why they screwed up, I mean, I wasn't that familiar with the lore of JR.R.R. TOLKIEN and the whole Lord Of The Rings books, I didn't read any of them... I just watched the movies. And I wonder if maybe the reason is because the development team working on this game just went with the movies? Or maybe they didn't understand fully how Elvish and all these other dwarven and spirit and uh, whatever other languages are in the game, worked? Um... I imagine you are pretty pissed off about it? I just think you must have been to dedicate that much time to it in this video, right?! Uh, I find it impossible to know the difference in pronouncing everything you just said, uh, I tended to take a much more simplified view on The Lord Of The Rings in general, this is my take, uh, and please don't get too offended by this, but.. if it's got a good amount of mystery, exploration, bloodshed, dialogue, and memorable characters that leave me guessing why they did certain things, I am going to buy the game and not really care! I respect that you understand the lore and everything has happened better than I do, and I am not saying that I think that is a bad thing.. it's just to me, everything seemed the same as the way they did the movies and all because, I saw a whole bunch of blood thirsty orcs charging huge fortresses and saw the rings and Sauron and I was like Oh My God!! I am so getting this fucking game!

Thanks fo commenting. No I'm not pissed at all :D my intention is not to complain or to rant on the game, just point out the differences for people not knowing about it. i think it#s an interesting topic and I like talking about lord of the rings and doing research. It started several ~3-4 month ago. I thought about what video I could make and thought maybe it's interesting for some people, because often there is much confusion, how accurate SoM is and Shadow of War was just announced. And since I know a few things about the books and lore, I thought it would be a nice idea for a video. Suddenly it got several thousand views (my most viewed to date), which was mind blowing. I had like 50-60 subscribers at the time and getting was really a great experience. And since then I made more lore videos :D I like SoM, sure as a huge LotR fan, the story is not my favorite art, but game design is amazing in this game. It was something fresh in the open world genre. Also it motivated me to do some research on some topics and read through some parts of the books again. Pronunciation is difficult. There are some rules and I try hard. being from Germany helps with it, because it often si quite similar. if yu listen to soem old english readings, you see how similar some parts of the elvish languages sound. (Tolkien was a philology professor) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ea5dkqqo1LWYqH0.html The differences between Sindarin and Quenya are definitely there, but nothing everybody knows about. I had to consult some dictionaries and writings about grammar too and I'm still not sure how correct am :D

The thing is, if you're going to build off someone else's lore, you need to stick to it. If you aren't going to, then make a game set in a universe of your own making. That way, people who actually care about the lore can make a game and won't have to fight for licensing.

It's a Video Game, if it followed the lore like you cry babies wanted so badly, it would not be an original story. I read the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, the Hobbit, and Lotr books and yeah it isn't accurate to the actual story of Tolkiens Middle Earth, but it doesn't have to be. If it was lore following like I said before, it would just end up being garbage
@ThePhilosophersGames

They marketed the games as fitting perfectly into the books lore (back in the day). Also what would be the point using an existing storyline/universe, when you don't care about it? Any story you tell, would lose any "meaning" because it's what ever. If they marketed it as a spin off, things would be different. In my opinion it's also interesting to compare the games' lore with the books' lore. In the final video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5OXqbVoztWumnU.html) I explain some of the references (not trying to bash the game), but explain where some ideas come from and what's different instead.
