To that I answer : you wanna burn down the house to pay a part of the mortgage with the insurance's money, without concideration for where you'll live afterwards or what'll happen to your children when the house's gone but the mortgage remains. Canada produces 1.6% of the world's carbon dioxide. Beyond that 1.6 number it becomes a fun with the numbers exercise. If the 1.6 is divided by the small population of Canada it becomes a large per capita number. On the other hand when 1.6 is divided by the land area that takes into transportation cost then the cost per area is very small. Another fun number to place with is temperature. People use the fun with numbers result that fits their narrative the best.

The total % of O&G energy can be reduced / offset by new energy sources but the overall energy from O&G will most likely go up. The overall energy requirement is increasing exponentially, the global population has increased by 3.5 billion people, almost doubling, in my lifetime. Wind and solar are intermittent and unreliable and require o&g back up, and the energy demand is just too great for them to handle the entire load alone. China, India and other developing (high polluting) nations are worried about what they are going to eat today and tomorrow and o&g can get them industrialized and to that prosperity faster and cheaper than the alternatives. For them, their needs today trump any western virtue requirements being pushed. Removing o&g as an energy source means direct reduction in quality of life.

Canada's per capita greenhouse gas emissions are so much because of high transportation and heating costs due to a sparse population spread across a large land mass with 6-8 months of cold winter. Two factors we can't change.
@ddhqj2023
@ddhqj2023 11 ай бұрын
I think our per capita emissions is high because we export oil, we grow meat and dairy (14-18% of global emissions comes from animal ag), there are more fossil fuel burning heavy equipment and pick up trucks in this country for personal use, than there are in many other countries. And on an individual basis, Canadians are not very conscientious about the carbon footprint of the various lifestyle choices we make. Norway is also an oil producing country, and they are also leaders in taking up EV's as well as using hydro energy for electricity. It currently provides almost all of their electricity needs. Canada is blessed by 80% of our electricity being from hydro power so we're almost there BUT we are still burning oil in several provinces strictly to make electricity. Alberta and Saskatchewan could be developing power links with British Columbia and Manitoba and that would lessen that oil use, although these two provinces are blessed with spectacular possibilities regarding renewables. Although with Danielle Smith stalling renewables for the next 7 months, those possibilities are in danger as investors would read that as 'an unstable business environment'.

If there were more refineries that had the capability to at minimum partially upgrade the bitumen before piping it out. It would shut her and her party up good and the Greens would support it! Though one is online in AB right now, I don't believe it is at full operational status yet and refining all the output will take a year or so before results are published. Big Oil can try to promote the sale of partially upgraded synthetic crude better so more of the masses can stop thinking that these innovative solutions happening in various R&D sites are still called up as raw tarsand molasses oil filled with chemical additives that various special interest groups love to pander. I also think May may of had a point with Harper repealing the previous legislation which could of created an environment for the liberals to create a replacement legislation disguised as a saviour in the form of bill C48/69. Though alot of the west were expecting the tories would of hung onto another term in 2015 so any consequences of this were not very high on the list concerning pipeline projects. For that yammering chatterbox lawyer: I would support the incremental intent of what C69 has to offer but it needs to be exceptionally clear and robust for the industry and give way to collaborative solutions that will not threaten to lock up projects in court or at the power of the environment minister who could put it in limbo for eternity. I do like the rule of early engagement with the various stakeholders to ensure the preliminary design is going the right way with good indigenous consultation and corporations are not trying to shove these thru for the biggest buck possible, (Like Boeing did for their MAX) at the same time not feeding those interest group with any fabricated or hypocritical fuel to shame both the gov and the industry, and even allow provisions if necessary to bar/ban/censor such groups from persisting their guerilla warfare once a decision is made, ESPECIALLY US SOros funded tree hugging troll houses. SO at worst if 69 its not canned, perhaps seriously disseminate that bill so once it is passed, it is in effect toothless.

Homes will need to be kept from freezing somehow. If this were a real climate emergency air travel would cease, as would vacations, cruise ships and the entire tourism industry along with amusement parks, parades, the Olympics, indoor hockey, the NHL, CFL, NFL, No more ATV's, RV's or motorized pleasure boats and that's before we even start on plastic and rubber products. Does Elizabeth May fly commercially to and from Ottawa?

It’s time for us to show the globin markets what we’re capable of with our gas and oil in Canada.
