Seymour Schulich, entrepreneur and philanthropist, discusses the issues he has with the regulations in Canada’s energy industry. While he’s optimistic about the sector, Schulich points to the risk of Alberta separating if this country doesn’t start listening to its pipeline woes.

@Here Beforeyou Yeah, when Quebec first threatened to separate, it hemorrhaged head office jobs and manufacturing to Ontario. It was an economic basket case for decades. And it was only able to turn it around because of its unique cultural proposition and because of the size of its population (i.e. market). Before it threatened separation, Montreal was the biggest and wealthiest city in the country. By comparison, Toronto was a sleepy little hamlet. And look what's happened since. Go ahead and play the same game, I'm sure Winnipeg and Vancouver will welcome the tax base. And for other corporations looking to set up in Canada, Calgary and Edmonton won't even show up on the long list.

Trudeau himself said Canada was a post nation state. Canada’s constitution does not include Quebec yet that province has a huge say on what political party is elected and in power. What is astonishing and remarkable is how Alberta, Saskatchewan, and possibly BC are still in this confederation.

@Brett S. Unfortunately, when I look at both the distribution of Parliamentary seats in Canada, and the wide variation in the populations of ridings in central Canada to those in western Canada (and the fact that this is cemented into the 1982 Trudeau Constitution, and unalterable), I think we've passed the tipping point. I wish that this was not the case, but it has taken only one term of a government with absolutely no honesty or integrity, and a very deliberate agenda not connected with the welfare of the country to bring this about.

It's a valid concern and many of us in other provinces have the same questions. Why aren't we building pipelines? isn't it safer and more efficient then trains? Why are we importing as much as we are from Saudi Arabia? Why don't we expand into more markets on the global scale? won't this create good paying jobs?
@TheJusnic82

Why why why is exactly what we have been wondering for years now. The asian markets have grown the fastest with oil use and china is the worlds number one importer of oil. They are begging for our oil. I honestly think the USA has something to do with it, because as it stands right now, the US buys over half our exported oil and they get it for dirt dirt dirt cheap. Why would the USA want us to start selling it to the Asian markets? Right now they are our main buyer, that would all change if we could sell it to the asian markets and elsewhere at actual market value. There have even been many cases where these rallies and protester groups in BC that are trying to stop the pipeline are actually american funded and even PAID to protest. Sure the liberals and NDP are anti oil and destroying Canada, but Im pretty sure a HUGE HUGE reason the BC pipeline isnt being built is because of American interference.

Pipelines are not being built because the Socialists in Ottawa, Quebec, and Ontario want to destroy the oil industry, an industry that they haven't been able to get their greedy little hands on, they prefer to subsidize alternative energy sources that are proven not to be effective and incapable of sustained production. They tried in Germany and it was a complete flop, then they were in a hurry to buy Russian oil. Interestingly enough, they are ready and willing to tax oil consumption to use as wealth distribution through the United Nations schemes. Too bad that all those schemes only make rich people in poor countries richer and the poor even poorer.

The answer is cheating lies because unless you get the full picture and understand it you are being lied to because our government his lying to us all the time and the media’s are the messengers of those lies. You can bet there will be lots of kicking and screaming from Ottawa as the Federal Government has long relied on western resources to finance initiatives that didn't much benefit the people who generated the wealth. Seymour talks about western separation. A vote would be followed by a negotiation. Alberta and Saskatchewan are unique amongst Canadian provinces in that neither ever JOINED Confederation. They were both a creation of Canada. They were given the land they were founded upon. They were given a transportation system to get people and goods to larger markets. And they were even given their population base on Canadian investment in Sifton's immigration plan. So, what kind of leverage would Western separatists have?

pierre trudeau made the National Energy Program to get cheap oil from Alberta. When Alberta did not want to sell for less than the world price of oil, pierre bought world price oil from Venezuela. Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba need to separate. Oil pipeline from Alberta to Churchill and then onto oil tankers for international customers,

Taxes are high in the City of Toronto because guys like Schulich lobby/pay politicians to build vanity projects in their name -- the latest one the old Seymour was involved with was the subway extension north from Yorkdale. The CITIZENS OF TORONTO PAID BILLIONS OF DOLLARS because he wanted to get students to his pet project on the York campus.

Trudeau himself has said that Albertans are not part of Canada, and that in fact Quebec and Quebecers are superior to, and deserve to rule the rest of the country. Is it any wonder that western Canadians who have been listening and looking to what Trudeau has said about himself not only do not trust Trudeau, but do not believe he is at all concerned about their futures, lives, and livelihoods? 2 years ago, I thought Alberta Separatism as a serious proposition was still something of a "letting off steam" issue. From what I hear from almost everyone I know in Alberta - and that represents a fair cross-section - I think it's not only inevitable, but imminent. I was already an adult when the elder Trudeau began decimated this province about 1980, and I remember the bankruptcies, the divorces, the suicides, the dispair. Not this time. There is far more anger, and its showing up in a completely different way.

If AB/SK separated, Trump would indeed be interested. No pitch fork from the east could do anything. In fact, if an interest in the US was expressed, the US military would be required to defend our right to decide, even pushing back the army of central Canada.

I looked into what would happen if Alberta left. It's laughable about what may very well happen. - Almost guarantees the pipeline won't be built. - All Albertans will loose any and all rights as Canadian citizens. - Albertan on EI will be kicked off - Albertan will loose thier CPP payouts - Albertan education centres will loose their federal creditals and as such loose any recognition world wide - Alberta will be exempt from provincial import treaties - exports will halt until any import agreements come into place with Canada and US. - airports & train stations would halt until international travel agreements come into affect. - Albertans will be stuck in Alberta until a recognized visa system is put in place for travel outside "country". -alberta corps that want to do business would have to reg as a non resident corp in Canada and since there is no tax treaty, this may result in them paying higher taxes. This could result in more corps leaving Alberta and by extension jobs leaving as well. Funny thing is Albertans bitch about the debt. Wait until they have to pay for the implementation on Alberta own political system mind you fair chance Alberta will forgo any political system whatever), healthcare, education, transportation, military, federal police, thier own currency, banking system, and other public services (most likely won't have any environmental protection system) Since many things in Alberta will end up being imported, some cost of living will skyrocket. If they leave, upward of 49% of Albertans may end up leaving in order to stay Canadians. This in turn will result in an influx of house sales, which in turn will result in crash housing market. Any Alberta products costs would bottom out as therenowuld ba surplus of Alberta products eg Alberta beef.

its kinda fault of Alberta... they are not as immigrant friendly as compared to Ontario and Quebec, that is why their population is only 4million. Less Population = less Voting power = less representaion at the Parliament. Their Nominee Program is the most difficult of all the provinces, They only accepts Skilled workers and there is ZERO chance for low and semi skilled jobs to be permanent residents, and yet they hired thousands and thousands of foreign workers espcially during Stephen Harpers time when the Oil and Gas was booming. They do not have any nominee programs for International Students studying in their very expensive colleges and universities.. The Skilled Immigrants (Engineers, Doctors, Nurses) who landed in Canada would definitely think twice in living in Alberta because their Foreign Credentials are extremely difficult to get equivalency in the province.. it would take years and years to get the equivalency. Premier Jason Kenny even proposed a bill to speed up the foreign credential recognition in AB... That is why all politicians are focused on QC and ON... if they win in ON and QC they win the election..

The major problem is that the minority is controlling the majority, another major problem is that the natives a stopping any progress and still they are tax free and collecting welfare, Canada should cut off any payments to any bands whatsoever until they realize that preaching and blocking advancement should not be rewarded. Natives with their feather hats etc, have never invented anything that benefited society, if it was to the Natives we would still get around on horses and stone boats. And of course when one points out the truth, the defence they have I’d Discrimination....many many feel that way but will keep silent fear being branded as discriminators.

Pharmacare pays of itself Seymour. Right now our system pays 20 times more for the same drusg than the New Zealand pharmacare system pays. That is a savings to the whole country! And it might even bring taxes down. I bet you and Amanda have gold-plated drug plans but what about the rest of Canadians? I bet that in addition to your oil and gas holdings you also have a good part of your portfolio in BIG PHARMA.

A very confused message from Seymour Schulich. I get that he is frustrated but what is the cause of the problem? Back a few years ago resource industries were in clover but not now and Alberta has some unique problems, some caused by poor policy decisions by previous governments there. Whose fault is the deficit in the funds to deal with abandoned oil wells? Why wouldn't the Klein government listen to people who had concerns about the environmental effects of the oil sands (surely a contributor to today's hostility to pipelnes, etc.)? Why no rainy day fund and investment in diversification away from oil gas (e.g. like Norway)? Okay that's all in the past. What's the way forward? Surely not to elect a government with its head stuck in the oil sands and a strategy of trying to blame the rest of Canada for its problems or for that matter stamping one foot and threatening to shoot themselves (by leaving) in the other one? Yes Canada has to help Alberta deal with its problems by getting some pipelines built and helping to deal with the abandoned wells problem, but some Albertan politicians need to start telling the people there the truth too. Without some kind of technological solution the days of burning oil and gas are numbered, so how does Alberta transition? I don't know but it seems that Seymour Schulich doesn't either and probably that's because there isn't an easy solution. But facing up to reality would be a good start.
