Isn't it entirely likely that civilizations develop fusion and self modifying AI, get their populations under control and don't really see a need at that point to expand? They are likely extremely efficient with their energy too, so they would laugh at the concept of Dyson swarms. I have the feeling that the paradox is in our imaginations and super advanced ET would laugh at our crazy ideas of what future technology would look like.

I liked he two-part collabs you've done before with Isaac, but this is freaking amazing. I'm formally requesting a 10-hour video series with you two. And on the topic of life extension, there's just so much to think about. I think one of the biggest things we're gonna discover in the next century is the actual nature of consciousness. I read somewhere a theory stating that consciousness is actually an emergent property of the quantum effects between atoms in the neuron's microtubules. Being just a humble physician I think I'm stuck at the cellular level in regards to experience, but thinking deeper than that is just fascinating. Life probably has a lot of properties that depend on subatomic interactions, instead of just molecules or proteins.
@Roonasaur
@Roonasaur 5 жыл бұрын
Personally - I hope that the universe has more than a few almost-literally-intractable problems for us to solve that will keep us going for billions/trillions of years . . . and I would guess (my humble, layman's, straight-up guess would be) that the nature of consciousness will be one of the final puzzles to figure out. Obviously, I'm just flinging poo here . . . but there's got to be SOMETHING that keeps the universe going, if it took this long just to get to here, now. There's just gotta be . . .
@iSamV2
@iSamV2 5 жыл бұрын
@@Roonasaur I know this sounds like woo, but I've always thought that consciousness is more than just the chemical and electrical interactions in our brains. I think it perceives or even influences other "layers" of the universe (the quantum world) that we wouldn't normally consider as something we can experience. I hope the next decades will bring us more insight on the nature of consciousness. Like, in the case of AI, how could we distinguish between an extremely complex process that simulates a person and an actual person (albeit one that lives on an electronic substratum). Lots of interesting things, and a lot of them spill over into philosophy rather than pure science.

I think intelligence won’t be that hard after there’s multicellular life… there will always maybe be competition between other animals and something intelligent will arise out of that. Perhaps a lot of star systems don’t have a Jupiter to block out asteriods. Perhaps we’re lucky…. It’s definitely a combination of filters. In this Milky Way there’s probably 10-20 civs who havant reached type 1. Prob 2-5 who have reached type 1. Probably one type 2 civ. I don’t think there’s any type 3 civ in this galaxy of ours.

I just can't get enough of this stuff. The really unique thing about these two channels, IMHO, is a combination of making old content fresh and making videos on those abstract ideas that people just don't cover. They give us just about every aspect of say, AI or Arcologies. And then there is the really unique stuff. Dumb Aliens? Well hell, why not? Cyclic Apocalypse?! Digital Death? I could list 20 more examples. And nearly every single upload on both of these channels is quality stuff that I just devour. We don't just get a 7 minute clip with a talking head and a bullet list. Newp. We get music, awesome freaking backgrounds, insanely in-depth analysis, explanations, etc. These guys seriously deserve their own TV show as well. Thanks guys, really. These are more than just some YT clip to fill the silence.

With Dyson Spheres I feel like we're hoping to see clunky bits of metal sturctures in space...like how a Hunter-gatherer may imagine aeroplanes would be made out of wood...If Dyson Spheres etc exist they are probably more akin to blackholes..If you think about it all blackholes do is absorb energy/light, and they seem to be at places in space where most energy is found. I am totally copyrighting this idea!

Thanks to John and team for producing this highly thought provoking episode! It got me thinking about how the scattered human diaspora may interact with one another at the edge of the heat death. It would obviously be advantageous to a civilisation to bring under its control as much matter as possible, so that it may use it to light fires deep into the darkest night in order to keep the gears turning. Perhaps, as the human diaspora inexorably diverges in terms of their culture and identity, we will see intense resource wars raging at the end of time, each civilisation hoping to lay claim to a little wax to keep the candle burning a little longer.

The thing that makes me wonder about giving "filter" status to the jump to Eukaryotes, though, is that it didn't happen just once in the time period in question. Around the same time (give or take a few hundred million years), Eukaryotes also absorbed some of the cyanobacteria ancestors of modern day chloroplasts, integrating them into their life cycle. Mitochondria and Chloroplasts might not have been the only ones, either.

Wow I can barely recognize Isaacs voice now. I used to listen to his old stuff and became very used to his speech. This sounds like a totally different Isaac.

Everyone who loves this channel and John Michael Godiers solo (I like those a lot too), support him on Patrion IF YOU CAN! He isnt doing this for the money, but with funds he can "do more". And deliver even more to us. Also, nothing proves how much people enjoys his work like when people actually tributing a symbolic sum! Even if its 1 Euro, it is something people only do when we really like something. Oh, Isaac Arthur is starting to earn a bit from his channel, by getting forced too lol. But he can now put money into it and have a large crew helping. Just imagine what John Michael Goodier could do with this channel, if it paid him more then his work? SURE, he would still be out in the garden fighing for his life vs the army of weeds! But still....he does this on his free time.......imagine if he had all day?

So much more insightful and informative than the Sutter videos which typically devolve into "IS IT ALIENS? We don't know. I AM A PHYSICIST." "DID I MENTION HOW LITTLE WE KNOW ABOUT THE UNIVERSE" "Eisenstein is just a historical footnote."

Another pertinent question to life extension is not only will it be possible to greatly extend lifespans during our own lifetimes, but also will it be accessible to everyone, or even most people? I can only imagine the social unrest tagging along with the idea that only some people get to "live forever."

Rare Earth ----> Multicellular life --> Complex animals ---> Animals with a chance to be intelligent ---> Intelligent animals that create technology. These filters are probably responsible for 98-99% of the Fermi paradox. Remember, humanity in it's current form has existed for 300.000 years at least. 290.000 years of those we were hunting on the plains before we bothered with agriculture and writing. What we call modern science started about 300 years ago at best. We've been able to ask these questions and start looking for answers only in the last 50 years. Even the smallest delay in development could mean that two nearby civilizations completely miss each other. The same way we plateaued as hunter gatherers for hundreds of thousands of years, we are always just one world war and / or climate catastrophe away from plateauing at a generally lower level of technology that is available for us today. We could nuke and global warm ourselves to a point where 3000 years from now we cannot defend ourselves against an asteroid that wiped all life forms out that are bigger than rats.

Issac often says that even if most people/civilisations would decide to not expand there would still likely be some that would. When listening about how civilisations would diversify after leaving the solar system I wondered if the same doesn't apply in reverse. With countless habitats floating in space if people in one of them decide to leave there is a possibility that a few other will not allow it. After all there is not much material benefit from other "countries" colonising the galaxy, while it creates great risk that one of countless colonies will turn hostile. With a Dyson swarm it's easy to imagine that some would want to expand, but it's entirely possible that some others would not allow it. You may actually need majority of people wanting to colonise, and even then the few remaining could do what they can to prevent it.
