The Shuttlepod Show

2 жыл бұрын

Our good friend, Gary Graham has passed away this year. To his family, we send our love and support. To Gary - our gratitude for your spirit and kindness and friendship. You are forever in our hearts.
In our second episode, Connor, Dominic and Erica "shoot the shit" with Ambassador Soval, Gary Graham! The producers made some changes to the trivia game, so it sucks less. The guys answer fan questions and dive into working on the Star Trek: Enterprise series. Whiskey. Music. A lot of laughs. We hope you enjoy!
Our show supports the work of Star Trek Enterprise actor, "Dr. Phlox" Mr. John Billingsley with the Hollywood Food Coalition, a non-profit with an amazing mission. Shuttlepod Show is providing financial support to this special organization and we encourage you to do so too. Link below:

On of the things that I think Gary did well as Soval (either intentionally or not) was he depersonalized Vulcans. Prior to Enterprise there were precious few Vulcans on Star Trek, and all of them had been active in their respective story lines long enough to have developed personal relationships with their respective crews; Spock saw Kirk as Kirk, as a person, as a friend. Soval, on the other hand, saw and treated the humans as "others," as less than, he brought not just a paternalistic feel to the character, but something beyond that, a kind of "If Vulcans were a lesser species, we would keep you humans as pets, but since we recognize that you are, technically, sentient creatures, we will be gracious and treat you as though you are our metaphysical equals (even though we both know otherwise.)" It was a very interesting evolution on the species, and as I recall, it's one that not everybody in the fandom was especially appreciative of, I honestly think that the character of Soval did as much to define what it means to be a Vulcan as all the characters who came before him. He was a delightful and unique character to watch.

What I thought was best about the character was when you realized that he didn’t actually think that way, that he was working behind the scenes with Forrest whole portraying what the High Command wanted him to be. It both demonstrated the way that Vulcans were expected to think and showed they were capable of thinking for themselves.
@MelonRace
@MelonRace 2 жыл бұрын
@@rogueally7993 I think there was one scene where Forrest and Soval were talking about how Vulcans viewed Humans and he's like "You have the tendency to blow up like Klingons but then suddenly embrace logic" and Forrest twigs and says "oh, we also remind us of yourselves?" Soval does this knowing look - he's terrified underneath - but then you realise...he has been the entire time.

I agree. One scene that comes to mind is in The Forge, when Soval mind melds with the guard to try to find out who the bomber was, even though it was a risk to his career, and then Soval boldly admits to the Vulcan administrator, yes, I mind melded with him.

It really must be hard to play a Vulcan, i admire Leonard Nimoy, Gary Graham, Jolene Blalock and Tim Russ for doing it in such a nuanced way. It would be cool to see T'Pol in Strange New Worlds since she has a large lifespan.

For sure. So much of our dialogue, intentions and communication relies heavily on our emotions which, in turn, show up on our faces, the tension in our voice, etc. To have to act without being able to use those tools to play your part? You’ve got to have something to pull that off.

His Voyager episode was so excellent --- he was an incredibly charming Ocampan villain, a really disturbing character. "Tanis" was the character's name and he was, in fact, quite Vulcan-like. He had a very calm veneer attained by real transcendental meditative power and he hated humans. The Ocampas that Kes had known he hated as well for submitting to death and not attaining to their potential. A good corollary for this episode would be the Enterprise season one episode 17, "Fusion" --- except in that case where T'Pol is the Kes character, the villain, Tolaris, IS a Vulcan with a good deal less Vulcan composure than Gary Graham's own Tanis. Voyager is my favorite Trek and Kes is my favorite character from Voyager.

Really enjoyed this episode! Losing Gary is such a loss; I was hoping he'd get another good starring role...he had a great personality and presence. But we have the shows he was on. I think I've always liked the Original Series the best, but for me Enterprise comes a very close second! certainly before TNG or any of the rest. In a way it was more modern, perhaps because of when it was made; TNG has not aged as well for me. I really enjoyed Enterprise's story lines, characters and dialogue and rewatch so many of the episodes on TV. Connor and Dominic, you were excellent on the show, and I'm glad to discover your Shuttlepod Show. And Dominic--I liked your mentioning John Sessions! I loved his work--especially I think on the British version of Who's Line Is It Anyway--he was like the star of that show for me, so quick and funny.

I realised I’d enjoy Garys’ interview when I found out about Sons of Kirk. But what made it better was to find out the band was literally cobbled together last minute! You have a band? …. Um, erm .. why do you ask? That whole episode was great fun. Thank you

Another fantastic episode!! Shuttlepod is my new favourite KZfaq show. Episodes could run a bit longer but keeping it tight has its advantages. 👏

I love Gary Graham, first watched him on Alien Nation, he wasbgreat as Soval. Sykes was such a passionate, temperamental character at times, and Soval, much less so. It really shows his range as a actor, and I just loved his music on here. That was so much fun to listen to! Love the show, keep it up! 😁😁😁😁😁
