It's season 2, episode 29. Perpetual ensign and co-host of The Delta Flyers, Garrett Wang joins us today! Dominic, Connor, and Mark are ALSO joined by the talented Bonnie Gordon, who sits in for our Erica LaRose in this awesome conversation with "The G-Man."
A reminder: As of the release of this episode the WGA & SAGAFTRA Strike is in full swing - while our show is not effected by the strike, for a myriad of reasons - we stand in solidarity with the ongoing strike and its aims. We try hard to avoid topics of discussion that would breach that unity. This conversation is limited to discussion about our guest's life, career, etc. and does not promote any current or past works banned by the strike. We hope to have Garrett back for a round 2 once the strike has been resolved.
ALSO: THE DELTA FLYERS IS AWESOME (link below) and we are hoping to have a Delta Flyers / Shuttlepod Show crossover soon.

QUESTION: WHY CAN'T THEY SAY STAR TREK? ANSWER: Strike. Actor’s union (SAGAFTRA) doesn’t allow actors to promote property owned by a studio or network currently under strike.

I'm sorry, but that's school playground mentality. Absolutely f***ing childish. What difference would it have made if an actor says the name of a TV show or movie they starred in says the title!? It's ironic that an industry full of nepotism, not to mention Hollywood favouring a tiny group of people when there are tens of thousands of actors who get overlooked, because prior fame likely more guarantees profit than an unknown, from an industry happy to pay millions to an ex-sports star who's already a celebrity over people dedicated to the craft becomes one of the chosen few. What a weird business that an industry accepts a handful of people being paid tens of millions alongside colleagues who need to strike to get the tinest of slices of that pie!!! Now that ought to be the big issue. Anyway, on a more serious subject; what an eye opener this episode was. I'll be the first to admit I don't really understand racism. And not being American, I wasn't really aware that it existed towards Asian people as outlined in this show. I thought the (again) immature nature of Trump's comments was purely about money and an issue with Asian economies and corporations becoming richer and more powerful than the US economy and it's corporations. I certainly hadn't taken his pathetic (again) school-playground quality naming of the pandemic virus as being a form of racism. I genuinely assumed the blame towards China was simply the uneducated section of the US (including that f***ing idiot!) not understanding that viruses, as part of nature, don't recognise or care for nationality or those affected by it. Interesting point about bullying being a issue for mass school killings. But completely wrong! Bullying happens in every school, in every nation, but typically those living in the US are too scared to point to the actual reason a child gets to walk into a school and shoot people!!!! Thankfully the majority of the rest of the world actually understands what that problem is, and so within the next month or so there's a guarantee it'll happen in the US, and highly likely nowhere else in the world. All I initially wanted to say as I started watching was that I had hoped that at the end of Picard season 3 Garret would appear, and as Captain of his own ship. Fingers crossed Seven gets to continue her adventures and Mr W and the rest of the Voyaget cast get to make some guest appearances.

I whole-heartedly agree. Maybe the current climate isn't right for this discussion, but the elephant in the room that really needs to be addressed is how little character progression the writers gave to Ensign Kim. Sure, the show had many flaws but speaking for myself I kept waiting for the show to start growing the Harry Kim character and it really just never happened :( I know for a fact that the problem was not the actor, it was the writers/producers. For the record, my favorite Voyager episode was the one where Harry and Chakotay transmit a signal back in time to Voyager to prevent their catastrophic crash. The moment when Harry celebrates (as he's dying) still reaches me.

@@aqualung2000 Kim had great progression. His arc outlines the entire show. He starts out green and obsessed with getting home. By the end he gives the Kirk speech to justify potentially giving up a trip home to help others. He goes from being deferential to everyone to smacking down Tuvok in the briefing room. He goes through a subtle arc of becoming a perfect Starfleet officer but it is there.

Garrett has always been among my top five ST actors. Seeing this amazing interview on your incredible forum (I just discovered!) was a real gift! His trust was evident in his candor and fearless discussion of bullying. I had my five minutes on stage with him at DragonCon in the Star Trek Miss Universe contest (Mother Horta won! I have the pictures!) I couldn’t have been more proud. My granddaughter and daughter hosted my trip to Atlanta and it was my last event (disabled now), now a golden memory. Gratitude! Namaste!

A crossover for the ages - The Delta Flyers and The Shuttlepod Show! Voyager is my favourite Trek, so to see you guys nabbed another Voyager actor was quite the treat! (Robbie next, pretty please? 🥺) Garrett was a wonderful guest - funny, humble and not one to shy away from discussing important topics. He has such a great storyteller voice, I could listen to him talk for ages. The story about his mom leaving his dad was so wild, I almost thought he was gonna pull a fast one on you guys, but I'm glad everything worked out them in the end! The fact Connor and Dom have been friends with him for so long really shone through in this episode, even just from Dom's introduction alone. Having Bonnie back to help co-host was great too, she's always such a delight! Thanks for another awesome episode, love you guys! 🖖💚🍃

My first pod comment is going to be for this ep of course! Garrett is a phenomenal guy who not only stands up for others and cares for this friends and family, but makes fans feel like they're a part of it. At STLV, he always makes me feel accepted and I am overjoyed at how we relate to one another despite coming from different backgrounds. Love ya, Garrett, and love the pod too! It was certainly enlightening and I can't wait to see the new pod space and the adventures that lie ahead. 💛

Can try and get a hint of who he is from the comi cons and all those things he goes too, but frankly, the recordings are piss poor and he does not get a chance to speak much. People cut him off, people ask the same droning questions countless times. So, instead of getting to learn about him like you do here, all you get is a snippet of who he might be.

So, as a UK person here, What Garrett talks about is the UK education system, we actually start kids around 3 in school, pre-school, learning basic things. Then Reception at 4, then Year 1 at 5 years old. We dont skip years/grades anymore - or rarely. But you can be over achieving in each year, they tend to give you more depth. Bu this is the public system, private system is sligly different.

What a great episode. I’m a huge Star Trek fan ever since I watched the reruns as a kid in the late 70s early 80s. At the 1:14:49 mark, he is exactly right when talking about bullying in school in school shootings. I would take it one step further and say bullying is a learned behavior at home before they get to school. It is the parent’s responsibility to raise their kids in accordance with decency and respect for all individuals. Bullying and racism starts at home. Little kids emulate their parents and that’s how they learn these behaviors or from a family member, or from a family friend that is allowed to act that way in front of their kids. When you talk about the felony, I would take it one step further and involve the parents as well if it’s proven that the parents had something to do with the learned behavior. I know that’s hard to prove, but that would at least be a start to solving the problem. And you can solve many more problems, other than just school shootings, which is a travesty. We can stop the hate in the world, and all the unnecessary judgment of individuals before you even get to know their character. I feel real strongly on this subject matter. Which is why I’m commenting on it. Maybe it was me and my upbringing, but when voyager first came out, I never noticed the differences in race among the crew and cast. I didn’t notice that he was a Chinese American. I never really thought about being African-American. I just saw them as great actors on a fantastic show that I enjoyed. Yes, I am white and you can’t get any more “White” skin than me. With that being said, I cannot even begin to imagine what he would feel like to be discriminated against because of your skin color or your ethnicity. I’ve never experienced that before so I can’t sit here and say “oh I know what it’s like“ or “I feel your pain. That would be a lie. A few years ago I never knew why “white privilege“ really meant. I found out what it meant by a team member at work that I managed that happened to be African-American. He was a dishwasher and when I was walking back into the kitchen, he yelled at me and said “ I want to talk to you in the office now.“ My first thought was “I didn’t know there was a problem between me and him.“ So I said OK and we went to the office. We sat down and I said Anthony what is on your mind? He said I want to thank you for treating me like you do everybody else. I was confused legitimately. I said “ I’m a little lost here. What are you talking about? Of course I treat everybody the same at work. And in my personal life. So I don’t understand why you’re thinking me.” he said well you’re white and in a authoritative position and I am an African-American dishwasher and you treat me just like you do the other managers the other team members that are white and Mexican. You don’t see me as a lower class individual. Stunned in silence for an awkward 10 seconds before I spoke again. I said Anthony I don’t know what you’re talking about. I treat everybody the same. I still don’t know why you’re thanking me. He didn’t spelled it out for me, the racism and the judgment that he goes through every day of his life. I was stunned. And I said, I didn’t know you had it that hard. He said it’s just not me it’s how our community thinks as well. Then I asked him well how can I use my white privilege as you say to make things better. He told me not to change a thing that I’m doing. He said that’s how you can use your white privilege. At that moment, I knew exactly what BLM movement was all about. It’s about having equal representation at the pervert table, by being treated like everybody else. So that’s what I do now. When I mean, now I mean like I’ve always been in my adult life. When I mean adult life, I mean 25 and above. Being honest with everybody before 25 I would laugh at jokes about other peoples culture in Maybe said one or two myself if I’m being honest. I regret saying those things because it really wasn’t how I felt deep down. I’m telling you this, so I don’t come off being a hypocrite and being totally transparent with everybody. But at 25 I grew up. I stopped surrounding myself within individuals that were not necessarily good people. I know this was long winded and if you got to the end, I appreciate you taking the time and reading this. What are your thoughts about what I said about school bullying. Are you with me on this or do you have another opinion, if you do, I would love to hear it

I met Garrett long time ago in Hollywood. Voyager at the time was in it's last few episodes. Asked him what happens in the last episode. Like any actor who signed a NDA, he declined 🤣

From the pilot, I didn’t really care for ensign Kim. As the series went on, he became one of my favourites. As I watched interviews, Garret seems like a really cool guy.

I had always thought the writer's didn't really put a lot of effort into "growing" the character of Ensign Kim in favor of other characters on the show, which is unfortunate.

Spectacular guest! Absolutely treated every time I log in here! This show never disappoints! Cannot get enough! GW has been a con celebrity favorite as much as any show/movie he as ever been in. I could not even get 22 minutes in before I had to stop and write this! We need him back. We need every guest back. Like a special day of the month where its.. Freaky Friday celebrity do over. I am thrilled your show has not stopped during the strikes. Look forward to this every time! Conner, WA. smoke has eased up. P.s. I hope Erica is coming back soon. Hope her and her family are well.

Really loved this interview. I haven't avidly chased down cast interviews/discussions of the various series and cast members, but really, really loved getting to know more about Garrett. He's so kind hearted, good sense of humor, easy going, and love his practical view on things. Voyager was a great show and the cast was excellent. I've been so busy with other things that I've missed a lot of episodes of Shuttlepod, but I'm reminded why I need to catch up. Thanks all!

It is wonderful to hear Garret speak and especially to talk about racism in Memphis and South and during covid-19 people just randomly taking it out on an elder Asian walking in the street I don't know how you end this but I do agree that is important to keep trying to mitigate it by having positive role models of

Funny how they never mentioned to color of the attacker though. They don't want to mention it because it doesn't fit the narrative of who is most racist towards Asians. Even Garrett was quick to say 'possibly Latino' when obviously it was African American. But hey it doesn't fit the narrative so that part gets swept under the carpet

It has been a while since I watched your show so depending on my memory is questionable, I will have to see it again no kidding. From my sporadic memories I think that you were a perfect match with you co-star, the ex-felon, and playboy, you complemented each other perfectly, I really liked your friendship. When it was the two of you united it was awesome.

As a Kiwi Chinese, I enjoyed the discussion regards racism. It's refreshing to see a discussion in the open about something that isn't really spoken about. It's a similar situation with Asians in this country... although it is changing given that more Asians are emigrating here now. As a student, I suffered many of the same issues as Garrett... others thought it was a great joke to snigger behind my back or take the opposite view to whatever my opinion was simply so they could argue with me. I used to carry a small bottle of juice as my little treat for the day. A couple of morons that sat behind me in class thought it was a great joke everyday to steal it out of my bag & drink themselves. After a week I got tired of it and laced it with a laxative. There were 2 outcomes from that... they never did it again and it's provided me with endless amusement ever since. As a bit of a sideline, I do Extras work on movies, adverts etc. Not to Garretts level of course. I think that movie makers are trying for more diversification given the changing demographic of the country. It's nice that the Asian thing works for me and not against me for a change... although weirdly I've never played a Chinese despite being Chinese. So far I've been a North Korean, a South Korean, an Eskimo, a native American and a Filipino (amongst other no-specified roles).

Quite frankly you are full of BS. You think white people only play characters that is only from their country? Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman playing Irish. Alan Rickman playing a German. Most European white actors having to play an evil Russian character all the time despite not being Russian As for his comments about Asian culture not being admired like African Americans in sport are is full of BS. Anime and K Pop is huge in the west. Asian food is one of the most favorite foods to eat. You get more Asian dramas on Netflix than you do African American dramas. I mean you even have a Korean movie that won an Oscar for best movie. Of course you would have experience racism and I do understand that, but what is hidden is the fact that most of the racism comes from African Americans. I actually applaud Dominic for mentioning the old Asian lady being suckered punched, however Garrett was quick to change the attacker as possibly Latino. No it was quite obvious they were African American. Racism should be talked about and all races should accept that their behavior needs to improve, but when people try to hide some of the narrative, then all discussions are a waste of time because it isn't fixing the real route of the problem
