My journey begins! I first started learning how to drive a motorcycle last year while living here in Cairo, Egypt, and recently took my very first small road trip to Alexandria, a city about 227 km north of Cairo. Now, I am setting out on a much longer journey, heading to the temples of Abu Simbel, which are in the far south of Egypt near the border with Sudan. The distance from Cairo to the temples of Abu Simbel is 1,139 km, or 707 miles. Yalla, let's hit the road and explore Upper Egypt by way of motorbike.
Welcome to the channel! My name's Gisselle, I'm a budget traveler and have been to 6 out of the 7 continents, visiting 20+ countries, living for some time in Sydney, Australia as well as in Saigon, Vietnam. I am currently living in Cairo, Egypt and exploring all this beautiful country has to offer while visiting nearby countries as well. I am a lover of language and a culturally curious lady just making my way through life one day at a time. I live to learn, I love to travel and explore, try new things and meet interesting people anywhere and everywhere in the world. Come along with me as I solo travel the globe and discover fascinating new places, try delicious local food, meet lovely people, and share a moment in time on this beautiful planet, our Earth.

I used to live in Egypt and really love your videos! This is a very adventurous plan - at one point tourists/foreigners weren't even allowed to take the normal train to Luxor (only the specific 'tourist' overnight train), because of security concerns. Upper Egypt unfortunately does have a reputation for being unsafe, I hope you are able to make your journey!!!

According to the US Embassy travel advisory their travel restrictions, but traveling by road to Luxor is not one of them. Years ago before the revolution foreigners traveling by vehicle were always escorted. After the revolution it was listed that foreign travelers had difficulties on the roads. But the Egyptian Government is doing their best to restore the safety. In December of 2021 I received bicycle friends who traveled from Germany to South Africa through Egypt. There were no problems at all, I met them in Khartoum, Sudan, over Christmas. All the best it is an amazing trip report. Looking forward to your next phase.

That is interesting, because all the travelers I have met on bicycle, motorcycle or even car have had escorts. I have actually read about this happening even decades ago. And a receptionist at my hotel (we were talking about being escorted around on my journey so far) told me there was a couple from Germany that stayed at the hotel he was working at, the couple from Germany were living in Alexandria for 20 years but went out a road trip south, and even they were escorted constantly. Perhaps they got lucky? Because I have heard about this problem from everyone I have met here in Egypt doing similar things. Thank you for you wishes, I am enjoying my trip despite the ridiculous escorts! 😆

Four Americans went for a holiday in Mexico and they were kidnapped. This was on the news in Australia today where two of them were executed by cartel members. Given that the news made it to Australia I take it the Egyptian government doesn’t want bad publicity drawn to their country.

They go to irritating extreem to make us feel comfortable. Many European do seek medical assistance in Egypt too. Medicine from welknown manufacturers are a fraction of US prices. I personally am on blood pressure medication. For the past 5 years I purchase my Co-Diovan from Phifer for one third of the US price.
@Gventures

Yes I have heard about that too. Mexico does have a reputation for crime and cartels though, unlike Egypt. I get that the purpose of them escorting me is for my "security" and they don't want anything bad to happen to me (or the negative publicity that would come with it if something did), but it is still very irritating. And Egypt is very safe, in my experience in the last 1.5 years I have been living here. Ah well, it is what it is. It is just irritating, nothing more.

You’re brave! Yes I believe Kino Yves had the same issues you did with the police. He was using his bicycle. They even held him captive in a hotel for a few days for “security reasons” they said. He was very upset. Not sure why it’s not so easy to travel around without so much hassle. It seems the police have nothing to do so they hassle tourists. Oh my gawwwwd they turned on their sirens when they arrived at the hotel. They literally have nothing to do.

Unfortunately, Egypt has been suffering from terrorism for the past years. Tourism is an important source of hard currency for Egypt. Therefore, it is very necessary for the Egyptian government to do everything possible to secure tourists and foreigners from the danger of terrorism. Because terrorism can target foreigners to hit the Egyptian economy and destroy tourism. But you can also feel the fun when you are under police protection. lol lol lol

@@Gventures Can you escape in the highways? There is not much police there. I can't describe my feeling, but I know very well that they care about the safety of tourists to a boring degree. I was watching a clip on KZfaq of some Egyptians studying abroad and they had their friends from different countries with them. They were on their way to enter Khan El-Khalili, but the police stopped them and prevented them from walking around with their foreign friends, and they excluded an Egyptian who had dual citizenship. And I wanted to ask you a question. Did something like this happen with your boyfriend or not? I know very well that if I was swimming in Sharm El-Sheikh and there were sharks in the presence of the police, they would remove all tourists from the water, even if they were in a place far from the shark. After that, they will pray to our Lord that I enter Paradise for my contribution to saving time for tourists while the shark is enjoying my intestines.😂😂😂
@Gventures
@Gventures Жыл бұрын
@@karimsalman5378 Hahaha, I have managed to escape a few times, either by sneaking out early in the morning, taking desert roads or losing them in city traffic (yay for motorcycles squeezing through traffic where cars cannot go!🤣). I am editing some of that footage now and will upload in a few days. Wow, no something like that has never happened to me with my boyfriend, but I was walking around with an Egyptian friend one night and the police stopped us (I was filming) and asked what I was doing, then asked my friend how he knew me. They asked me if I knew his last name and because I knew it I guess they believed we were actually friends and let us both go (I was also speaking some Arabic and told them I lived there, maybe that helped?), but yeah I get that kind of feeling sometimes, it's really messed up. Like, why can't Egyptians just hang out with a foreigner if they want?! It's really bad the way they are treated sometimes, and I find it disgraceful. Damn man, that is one hell of a way to describe the inequality and treatment of Egyptians to foreigners. Enjoying my intestines had me laughing, but it really is messed up.

What made you so enthusiastic about Egypt? What made you want to live there? Was it that Golden Parade perhaps?
@Gventures
@Gventures 9 ай бұрын
No, to be honest I had never even heard of the Golden Parade before coming to Egypt, I only heard about it after coming here. I had always wanted to visit Egypt, like most people around the world do. I was planning to travel for 3 months and then continue traveling to other countries, I think I may have mentioned that before. When I arrived I immediately loved it, I was intrigued and fascinated. I decided to stay longer. The more time I spent here the more I loved it, the more I learned, it was like an onion, peeling back layer after layer of information, culture, history, etc. I fell in love with Egypt and Cairo right away and the more time I spent here the more I loved it. Living here wasn't planned, it just happened.

Trust me Giselle, it’s not necessary until it is. I get it, it’s quite annoying to be treated like a child with big brother holding your hands and stuff, but it can get very dangerous very quickly especially down south where sht has happened countless times over the years. They are doing it for your safety and also to save the government from having to deal with any embarrassment. You have to realize that the security situation is still a bit shaky and I guess always will be, at least that’s the way it’s always been ever since I can remember, and that there are sleeping cells that could be anywhere waiting to strike at any moment. They’re are many things that could go wrong and that’s not just taking wild guesses. There’s been precedent. So, I’m totally with you that it’s annoying but try to see it from a different angle and consider it just another minor inconvenience among many inconveniences that all people face in Egypt.. foreign or not. And as always, be safe and have fun!

I had an Egyptian friend of mine help me find a place to rent. It's pretty hard to find a place on your own without getting charged more than advertised, but with an Egyptian they can help you get a fair price and also speak Arabic and do most of the talking. I hear you though, I came to Egypt in October 2021 with a plan to just travel for 3 months and then continue on to other countries, but fell in love with Egypt after arriving and decided to stay. Still here almost a year and a half later! 😅

I feel frustrated . If I wasn't married and had a son, I would have taken you in, of course. But here I am trying to give you advice. - Try to get to know an Egyptian before coming to Egypt, and believe me, this is very easy - Use an application called OLX . It has many furnished apartments for rent, starting from 3500 EGP, about $100. This price is for simple and non-luxurious apartments. Choose a place other than slums. Like Maadi, maybe Nasr City or Sheikh Zayed

I'm from Texas and have been to Egypt. The police were likely very worried about a foreign woman riding a motorcycle alone on the highway for such a long distance. The very last thing they need is something to happen to an American - it will be all over the news that an American was hurt/kidnapped in Egypt. May be inconvenient for you, but it would be the very last thing they want or need their country to experience as they depend so heavily on safe tourism. Thank goodness there is this level of security/protection - not offered in other countries.
@Gventures
@Gventures 7 ай бұрын
Yes, plenty of people have left similar comments under this motorbike video series, and of course I am well aware of the reason they do it, as I was told multiple times it was for my safety. I also of course know IF anything were to happen to me it would be very negative media attention on Egypt and could even affect tourism here which is certainly a good chunk of Egypt's GDP. Still riding for weeks across the country and encountering the dozens of checkpoints I did in a day was exhausting, especially when you have an 8 hour ride through the desert and your back and butt ache. The multiple checkpoints slowed me down a lot, it also changed the experience (they were trying to keep locals away from me-which is one of the reasons I wanted to make this trip, to experience the towns and villages where tourists do not visit. They would turn their sirens on when driving through these small towns and villages, which drew attention to me. I couldn't just stop in the desert and use the bathroom somewhere because they were always there. Their vehicle was kicking up rocks that hit me as I was driving, their truck blocked my view, etc. etc. It just wasn't great.) And although perhaps there is some danger out there in the desert, it didn't feel like it and I never encountered it while alone (which I was for a good portion of the trip-I managed to ditch them in traffic or leave my hotel early so I could enjoy my trip alone. One day I spoke to a supervisor on the phone and he let me drive alone and told the police to stop following me). Anyway, I understand their reasons for the escort, but it doesn't negate the fact that it is extremely annoying to say the least. They also do this with all travelers, man or woman. I met a French man in his 40's who was cycling across Egypt while on this trip, he also had an escort and look very unhappy about it as well. I've heard countless other similar stories of people traveling across the country in their own transportation and dealing with it. Anyway, ce'st la vie! I am still planning more motorbike trips around Egypt and will deal with the escorts then just as I did on my last trip south

Try to think of it in a positive way, consider yourself a VIP, indeed you're for us and all other foreigners as well, and it is mandatory for them to escort you everywhere. By the way, it is a serious matter to watch out while riding of the big gaps with the bridges connections as it is one of our guaranteed methods to face our population sheer increase.

Well this motorbike trip has long been finished now, but my vlogs are just showing my experiences, from my perspective. I understand the rules and yadayadayda, but I really wanted to make this trip solo. Having police escort me, slow me down, flirt with me, and everything in between really is not the experience I was looking for when planning a SOLO motorbike trip across the country. I think I was pretty polite with the police, all things considering. I know they were just doing their jobs and doing what they were commanded to do by their superior officers, and I joked with many of them and it was fine, I wasn't extremely rude or causing a scene or anything of the sort. It isn't what I wanted though, and I am clear about that both with my viewers and I was clear about that with the police. I think I am a very positive person and adapt to my circumstances, but I am going to be honest and blunt about how I don't like it.

Egypt is super safe yet the security is obsessed with unwanted patterns... I mean it is safe for her to travel with her bike like this. But if this started to be a pattern of foreigners who travel randomly in their bikes everywhere then this will be a problem for the police to cover because this will be an easy target to terrorist groups who are sometimes target tourists in middle east. So they usually think better safe than sorry. Same thing happens to Egyptian christians touristic groups inside egypt as well

They say it is for my safety, but it is not necessary. As I stated in the video, this happens to many foreigners all the time. It is an older policy that perhaps at one point in time was important to have, but Egypt has changed over the years and in my opinion (and many others), this old rule of following foreigners for our "safety" should be done away with. A receptionist at one of my hotels was telling me he met a German couple that had been living in Egypt for 20 years (in Alex), they went on a road trip and even they were "escorted", although they had been living here for that long! So it is unnecessary.

That's bullshit. Some of the police hit on me, tried flirting, took my number telling me it was to check that I reached the next city okay, then called me and sent me inappropriate messages on Whatsapp. The people are nice, I live in Egypt and interact with normal, local people every day, they are absolutely fine.

Culturally - it is very unusual for an Egyptian woman to travel alone with no accommodation booked; no definitive plan etc. So they are alert to this anomaly plus the fact that they have an obligation (real or imagined but in place nevertheless) to track you. Part officious; part paternal. You probably have given them some exciting anecdotes for the day!

Oh yeah, women traveling like me in Egypt, it almost never happens. And on motorbike?!?! 😱😱Oh no no NO! 🤣🤣🤣 I barely ever even see women in CAIRO on motorbike, and that is the capital. There are essentially no women driving motorbikes elsewhere, so it is a huge shock. Combine that with yes, I am a woman traveling alone (most of these solo foreign travelers cycling through Egypt that also get escorts do tend to be men), AND I am a foreigner, AND an American. Pfff. Well, the cocktail has been mixed, sit back and enjoy 🤣🤣 Oh, I am certain I made everyone's day more interesting, haha. At checkpoints everyone starts wandering over or coming out of the building to investigate the commotion. I take off my helmet and they see the red hair 😯 😂 It's funny though, I was joking around with the guys at the checkpoint, using some slang Egyptian Arabic, I had them laughing 😄

@@Gventures You tick every oddity box! You can see in their faces that they are not quite sure where to place you. Woman! Red hair! Speaking Arabic! Dual Citizenship! This is just crazy. Who ARE you???? So funny. But aside from being uber-controlling as part of their job - they do seem to be quite entertained by you. Also - Egyptians do seem to love investigating a commotion. They are very curious.

@@elizabethring1452 🤣So true, in general Egyptians are very curious 😄And to be honest, while I had some frustrating moments when my ass and back were sore from riding and I was tired of waiting at a checkpoint or waiting to be exchanged to the next escort and just wanted to keep driving to get to my next destination, I remained polite (or more like a little sassy while joking around) with them during all of this (I just complained to my camera afterwards). It is rather humorous, and both me and the police were usually having a laugh. They are only doing their job, after all. I have some pretty funny memories of it, but I wasn't able to record during those exchanges at the checkpoints, I would always turn the camera off (security reasons for their checkpoints).

@@Gventures And that was the perfect technique too because acquiescing to their authority was viewed as far more respectful than getting angry. It was actually quite funny - especially when they were backing up to reach you on the highway! Being respectful as a foreigner is very important - and acknowledging that the police have a job to do. They seemed to like that you are a smoker too 😆

This is not cause they like to “keep tab” Egypt faced an isis insurgency with tenth of thousands pouring in from Gaza, Libya and Sudan. This was no joke. 3,000 Egyptian civilians military and police personnel +250 tourists were killed and over 20,000 isis and al Qaida fighters killed. Not to mention especially in upper Egypt a wave of terrorism gripped in the 90’s and it was brutal. A tourist traveling on their own in certain parts of Egypt are the ultimate soft targets. Tight security might come as inconvenient for you but you feeling safe has nothing to do with how safe you actually are. They could keep tabs on you through your phone and collect all the data they want btw the Egyptian government has that capability. This is not North Korea.

No idea, but I don't think so. It was a random thing for them, me just showing up at a checkpoint, solo American girl on motorbike. They were told to "escort" me for my safety, so they were just following orders. No police ever asked me for money, I don't know what they get paid, but I highly doubt anyone is getting paid more to follow me around. Egypt just has a lot of security. You've been here, you know it. Tons of security checks at the airport. Lots of security at ancient sites. Lots of undercovers walking around. Military and police stationed at various places around the city. Checkpoints all over the country. Egypt just has a strong military and police presence, and lots of foreigners are surprised by it when they first come here.

Don’t believe for what they are saying ( safety and security ) or for you to feel more safe, this is a military rule state, you have living in Egypt for how long, so you got to know how the country is very safe to move alone without anybody to guard you, so they are just creating some story for you to believed them. The regime is showing that to the other countries ( European ) to tell them that everything here is under control and no one else can do what they are doing, happy journey and god bless 🤲

First of all, I don't want to drive at night, I am driving in the early morning hours while it is cooler, and to make better time because there is less traffic. I understand the cause (obviously, IF something bad were to happen to me, it would be negative publicity which could affect the tourism in Egypt, and hence, the economy), but regardless of that fact, it is still annoying. It is what it is though. Like I said in the video, I know they are just doing their job and I was polite to the officers, but it still sucks to deal with as I make my journey.
