Good Video CJ. It always amazes me how many different methods to this game. One person can have success and another can fail, using the same path.

Added too much livestock too soon. It may not have killed them directly, but stressed them out enough to succumb to some other bacterial or contamination issue. Beneficial bacteria in a bottle cannot keep up with 4 or 5 fish + all of the decomposing matter from decaying live rock right from the get-go.

@The Planted Reef Nah, he can handle it. That's why he openly posts videos documenting the failures along with the successes and subjects himself to criticism here. Just like all of us in this hobby from time to time, I think he just got a little impatient in kicking off the tank (probably, in part, because of the tank "challenge" with Rico).

Big Sexy’s Aquariums yessir! That’s what it’s all about... I could have just stuck to the normal routine but I’ve now learned how to NOT use bottle bacteria the wrong way and now have a real idea of setting up a tank multiple ways. Hope this video helps give someone food for thought... thanks for watching 💯💯💯

Good call on the fishless cycle,your bio load will be stronger with that approach not to mention money saved as well as fish lives.
@dsinsocal
@dsinsocal 5 жыл бұрын
Biological filtration requires food (waste) in order to grow. It's not about going "fishless". It's about keeping the amount of waste below the capacity of your biological filtration. With all of the decaying matter from his live rock (which died off during the aqua-scape process), and the addition of so many new creatures at once, all the bottled bacteria on the shelf wasn't going to avert that disaster. Always start with squeaky-clean rock, use live sand (from a bag, not another tank), add a bottle of Bio-Spira (or similar), and give that bacteria plenty of space to colonize (Marine Pure recommended). You can add a fish or two immediately. This actually helps the bacteria colony get established and grow to meet the demand. You can slowly add more life to the tank every 2-3 weeks, giving the bacteria a chance to catch up each time. I've done it this way on the last 3 tanks and have never had to deal with the waiting or the annoying algae blooms associated with typical cycling.

Dr. Tim's here and it work amazingly, used that and 2 Mollies and my 30g was cycled in about 7 days. Love the black mollies, they are algae eating machines for me. Also my Mollies ended up being male and female and they gave birth to 8 little ones than I have now in a Fluval 13.5. It was really cool seeing the live birth.

Would you say a lot of your losses/outbreaks throughout your videos have a common occurrence, that being a seemingly lack of patience in the hobby? For anyone that's interested in the hobby the first thing to understand is patience and it doesn't matter if you're a noob or a seasoned vet in the hobby. If you wanna keep your money in the tank let alone the health of the inhabitants themselves first and foremost the key is to have that patience. I'll be the first to admit that there's no "right" way to reefing but I think anyone versed in the hobby can agree that patience is the closest thing to "The Right Way" that you're gonna get. It's probably the best idea to let that tank sit for at least a month fallow and then introduce live stock One by One over a long time to give them the best chance.
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 5 жыл бұрын
your 100% correct! that's why I showed all 4 ways I've cycled my tank... the best success ive had was my Fish-less cycles that I was patience and waited 4-5 weeks. Hopefully everyone watched the entire video to the end where i mentioned this... and didnt miss the message. Thanks for watching
@Desmo1
@Desmo1 5 жыл бұрын
@@CJSAQUARIUMS Respectfully, I think it would be doing future inhabitants a solid as well as your followers to apply this patience across the board and not just to the nitrogen cycle. The amount of fish you add to such a new system at one time, the abrupt equipment changes etc. all can play a role in the health and stage of a system. Reefing is finicky in its own right, best not to exacerbate the experience by a lack of patience. I think a lot of people take those bacteria in a bottle products as a work around to time, when in fact it should be used for more of an extra effort in setting yourself up for a better probability of success AFTER patience has been applied. I'd say "Keep doing what you doing" but you probably shouldn't LOL, jk man...be eazy!

Great update. Water changes are the best it’s all I’m doing on my new tank. The only short cut in having a quick cycle is starting with cured live rock. I had mind in a bend for 2 months with pump and heater no light. This is what I did and I didn’t have any fish death or corals. And I added all livestock 1 week after setting up my tank. I must say I looked at my best tank in the past which was my 54 gallon and I repeated every step and success happened.

It happened to me too bud had that white slimmy stuff all over my rocks. It turned out to be my aerosol sprayer in the bedroom. Did a 20% water change and siphoned out the sump and within a few days cleared up like a champ. The funny thing was I lost 2 clowns the same way you did. Now I'm fighting dinos and using Dr Tim's waste away. It's slowly coming along. My nitrates are at zero and waiting for them to climb. Wish me luck. Great vid thx 👍

It looks like the sand may have had a lack of flow at the bottom there. Do not be afraid to drop a large air stone and biosponge thing at the back. I have found that it pushes through that specific bloom theu could not survive. The guy caught something when the oxgen was low enough for his immunity to drop. The fish could not handle the live rock amount without a large air and flow at the bottom.

love your videos, thank you. I have a 90g saltwater tank with 2 eheim 600 canisters with the default media they came with. nothing special but it works for now. I am working on getting a sump for my tank but not one of those beautiful ones, the one I ordered is the Pro Clear Aquatic Systems Red Flex Reef Sump - 100, this is because the space I have is limited but it should do the trick.

Exactly how I described it! Canary in a coal mine! I would live in that tank and take my chances. Best cycling video I have seen!!! I agree with everything you do. Can't lose um if they aren't in the tank. Pet stores should warn people about tank cycling and I bet they would increase their profits 100 fold instead of giving up because of dead fish!

Over all it appears that you have much better luck with the smaller tanks(the pico and the jbj 45) you started out with. Generally pico and nano tanks are harder to keep stable parameters given the much less water volume,but yet your struggles are with the larger systems. I loved your jbj45!! Great channel btw.

Yeah that's crazy! Usually the shrimp or snails would die 1st when something is wrong. Maybe the rock from the factory wasn't cured all the way before it was shipped out and was releasing chemicals into the system that killed the fish.

I've used Dr. Tim's bacteria in a bottle in my old 165 and current 190. I used it with the Dr Tim's ammonia according to the instructions for a fish less cycle and it worked great! It is not the cheapest for a larger tank but it does work really well.

The hawk looks like ammonia burn which makes sense with the cycle stage. My only question is the rock was cured then you let stuff die off then cycled tank. I don't feel it's the fritz I used that 3 times so far to start tanks with dry rock. Gave it two weeks added fish good to go. I use a raw shrimp as a indicator once it turns jelly good to go

The fish died but the inverts didn't? I find it hard to believe it had anything to do with the cycle if that's the case. I've used Bio-Spira to start 3 tanks and have added several fish within a month each time and never had an issue. I think it actually recommends you add multiple fish to give the bacteria an ammonia source. Either way, getting back to your roots should yield familiar results for you going forward.

Sorry for the losses as that just sucks! Tried Fritz bacteria and honestly didn’t work for me. Tried their Ca and Alk in an establihed tank and same issue. Switched to microbacter 7 and it worked. Switch to code A and B in an established tank and levels are spot on. Just my experiences
@HollaAtChaReefBoy

I did this when I didn't have the luxury of having a QT tank. Now that I have a bigger tank, I just couldn't take the chance on non-QT fish. So kept my nano tank and turned it into a QT tank. As for cycling, I just use biospira and let it cycle on it's own for 2 months.

Personally, I don't add any rock or sand aside from when I set up the tank. Adding extra rock or sand can always start another mini-cycle and beyond that I just don't risk adding the possible pests that may come with live rock. If the fish didn't make it, then perhaps your cycle wasn't as far along as initially believed. I'm sure you checked for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc. If all those levels were good then fish should be fine at your stage unless there is some stray voltage, parasite, or bacterial infection that got the fish. A tank will become mature in its own time. Your tank is probably telling you it isn't ready. I'd just take it slow. Slow and steady wins the race. Best of luck and look forward to seeing it come along.

CJ my man! Don’t let your tank be an AJ tank! Let’s make sure this is a Deontay Wilder tank LOL. Sorry about that man but yeah the only way I’ve ever set up a reef tank is by using lava rock as my base rock, and then bite the bullet and pay for live sand and then pay for LFS live rock to build on top of the lava rock. And then all the good stuff spreads down from the live rock on top of the lava rock and all the good stuff from the live sand spreads up onto the lava rock. You got this man! #stillwinning

Looks like the oxygen was depleted from a bacteria bloom. Would have been interesting to see the readings of an oxygen probe. Probably not a coincidence that the fish that was the least active was the last to go because the more active fish needed more oxygen. Been there too.

Yes the sludge remover directly impacted how effective the turbo start was cycling my tank. I discussed this in the previous update... wasn’t known until after I had already added the fish. I thought adding bacteria and waiting a couple weeks before adding fish would be golden.. but the cycle stalled. This video is the aftermath.. I’m chilling, staying fishless and dosing small amounts of ammonia until things settle down.. weird start to a tank. First for me for sure but it will be fine.. time for some bike vlogs while I wait 😎🤙🏾

Great point!!! Anytime you add a carbon source to a tank,you MUST run an adequate skimmer to remove some of the funk film,but MORE importantly its so there is no oxygen depletion,which commonly happens when adding ANY carbon source.

This hobby has a habit of kicking you when you're down often with no tangible explanation as to what caused the problems. This often results in high expense, but even worse is the loss of livestock, however, it can also be the most rewarding hobby so stick at it dude and keep your pecker up, if your previous systems are anything to go by this one will end up being just as stunning in the long term :-)

Hey Cj. I've seen you vape in videos before. I know vape juice has different types of contaminates that potentially may have affected the tank. You may have already thought of that but just my two cents. Thanks for the great videos!

U had once lost all fishes before also i guess. The issue is everyone depends on bottled bacteria. Iv stopped using them. Best method is ammonium chloride and vinegar.

Just cycled 4" purple tang, 2 adult clowns, 1 4" sleeper goby and lawnmower blenny in a 20 gallon. None died. Tested 2-3 times daily and went through 300 gallons water changes.

I am "so* confused. You trust your livestock to ... claims from Fritz? It's great that you are admitting errors, but what motivated you to put a fish in an uncycled tank? And then, you put a bunch of new, unquaratined fish in at once? I mean, putting in a clown or damsel is old school but not crazy.

Maybe adding too much live stock on a new build too soon, just bio spiro bottle or go to a local corner store by bottle of ice tea stand over your tank and piss in it the old school way.

not sure.. I pre-dosed bacteria 2 weeks before even adding fish. Your suppose to be able to add this stuff and fish the same day according to the instructions of the manufactures. It did not work for me... I think ether noone watches all my videos fully or they always miss the message. I dunno Maybe its pointless to even share the truth these days... what do you think?

You "don't have high ammonia readings or anything"? Ammonia at any level is toxic. So is Nitrite.

Not going to lie, there's some things he does wrong; and that's why he lost the fish during the process. Not sure how u can put out videos of "how to do something" but ur losing the fish in the process.
