To me, at 63, it is weird that the 30-06 is being talked about as if it is a Model T. Seriously, the 30-06 is a viable contemporary round that is effective for a wide variety of shooters needs.

The bullet weight range is impressive. Obviously the case design was ahead of its time since it is the basis for so many other cartridges. I really like .270 Winchester but recently bought a rifle in .30-06 just because. I’m glad that 4895 is a “go to” powder since I have a little bit somewhere …

50 years ago I started hunting and shunned the 30-06 as it was so common. 5 years ago after 45 years of experimenting with everything else I bought a 30-06. Now I own 3 and am getting rid of a lot of my other rifles. Loaded to modern pressures it's an amazing round. Versatile and super well balanced! Sheep to Moose to Big Bear and Bison as well.

If I ever looked for factory loads for a hunt in Alaska for Alaska's big three, I would want 220 grain round nose softs. Forget the trajectory table for 500 yards. Moose, buffalo, and Kodiak bear, this is the kind of game you want to stalk to within 50 yards.

I've been using Barnes bullets for decades now, and that's exactly what I'd be using. In all the years I've used em I have recovered exactly 1 bullet, from a Spike Bull I busted at 500yds in his bed, found the BEAUTIFUL bullet in his hide on the opposite side after busting both shoulders, had I not hit shoulder it woulda punched right through no doubt. Had over 90% weight retention and did it's job perfectly. Been extremely happy with Barnes Loads, the TTSX and LRX mostly.

The 30-06 is a grand old round that’s survived for over a century and never needed any company or talking head to root for it because it’s simply that good! When the current collection of the newest, greatest, can’t-live-without-it rounds are forgotten and obsolete, the 30-06 will still be used and celebrated! My prediction is that Hornady, and the rest of the ammo companies, will be turning out the 30-06. If someone asked me what rifle caliber to own, I’d say 30-06 and never look back!

The guys mentioned that the M1 Garand was designed to use a 7mm cartridge (276 Pederson) but General MacArthur changed it to 30-06 because there was WWI ammo left over. Ironically, at least according to Hatcher's Notebook (page 25), all of the WWI stocks were used up by 1936, before the M1 Garand even entered service. It has been argued that having a battle rifle using the same cartridge as the machineguns helped with logistics, but others argue that the material savings from the smaller 276 Pederson, lighter weapon, and reduced ammo weight would have more than compensated for that.
@DJones476
@DJones476 8 ай бұрын
Carlos Hathcock used the 180-grain Camp Perry match load during his second tour, and possibly, his first as well. Unless I'm mistaken, the ammo was manufactured by Winchester-Western. Most of the .308 stuff was made at the Lake City plant, and this is what John Roland Burke and later on, Ron McAbee would have fired from their M14s (M118 Ball, 173-grain). Brotherly love from British Columbia!😎🍻

My LUCKY rifle is a late 1990's Ruger M77 30-06, who ever carries that rifle gets a deer. Beautiful walnut stock, high quality shinny blue, with a Leupold 3x9, very simple accurate enough, light weight rifle. I've carried it for miles and miles of spot and track hunting.

Haha I have an old M77 too. With a Leupold 3x9 And I LOVE that it holds 5+1 rather than the 4+1 basically every current production 30-06 rifle holds nowadays Been using that old M77 for over 20 years, and my dad used it for a decade before he passed it to me. Taken dozens of various big game animals shooting good old Remington Core-Lokts and Barnes TTSX loads, and dozens of coyotes using Mil Surplus FMJ loads over the years, and it's just as accurate as the day it was made. Cover 3 rounds with a nickel at 100yds year after year Named it "Sandman" after I tipped my first buck, bull, and bear over with it when i was 12 years old, a "grand slam year" as we call it. 😂 Dumped an elk at 550 yds with that rifle, and it holds a special place in my heart.

I might mention that my .30-06 I built from an '03A3 Springfield barrelled action loves MILSURP M2AP cartridges. It acts like match grade ammo. The berm behind the targets was a hill a quarter mile thick, so excessive penetration was not an issue. Tolerances were held tighter due to the nature of the manufacturing process. In People's Republic of California, Commissar Newsom and Comrade Bonta don't like it. For match or target ammo, environmentalists love it because it is lead free.

270 is a great cartridge, but frankly it's not NEARLY as versatile as the 30-06, it's just not 30-06 is the single most versatile do-it-all cartridge for North American big game, hands down 270 is a great flat shooting round, great for deer and real big game like Elk/Bear ECT out to 3 mabey 400yds but i really prefer a bigger heavier 30cal bullet for those longer pokes on those bigger animals, 180gr ect. It's just really needed if your takin longer pokes. 270 can make the hits but it just lacks that brass, mass and ass of the bigger 30cal heavier bullets. At least In my opinion. YMMV

🕵️‍♂️ Did You Know that the 270 Winchester can shoot Bullets from 80 grains to 180 grains with a 1 in 10 twist? And, if you use the 165 grain Nosler ABLR Bullet, like I do, that 270 Winchester Has Alot More Range Than 300 to 400 yards! IN FACT, At the Elevations Where I Hunt Elk (9,000 to 12,000 feet, with a Muzzle Velocity of just 2,800 ft/s), it will maintain an Energy Level of over 1,500 ft lbs (the minimal amount of energy most people accept as What is needed for elk) and a Bullet Velocity of over 2,000 ft/s out to over 800 yards (1/2 mile)! While I am not shooting that far at Any Game Animals, the 270 Winchester has the Ability to Do More Than What is Necessary! 🤑

Carlos Hathcock set the Wimbledon 1,000 yard record with a Springfield 1903 in 30-06. I am not him, but the ‘06 has given me 0.47 MOA at 100 to 500 yards with hand loads. And I cannot stabilize a 110 grain bullet in my barrel, but the 165gr to 220gr works stellar. MAC SOG forever.

I kinda sorta take umbrage in your comment that thaw 20-06 was the first cartridge with the standard rim diameter that occupied this space and the rest of the shooting world was playing catch-up (paraphrasing). The 6.5x55 & 7x57 were introduced in the early 1890’s and have rim diameters of 0.480 & 0.470 inches respectively. Whilst the 8x57 was introduced in 1903 also utilizing the standard boltface. If anything the 39-06 (as much as I love it 🥰) was last to the party. Have a Merry Christmas!!

The SAAMI chamber for the 30-06 has a simple taper into the rifling without a section of snug freebore to assure that the bullet is aligned with the bore. Is there a significant improvement in average accuracy with a more modern "match-style" chamber that has a section of freebore? If getting a new barrel, is it worth it to specify a match chamber?
@mrdark9916
@mrdark9916 8 ай бұрын
Honestly dude, unless you're doing extreme long-range it's not even worth it. Been using the same old Ruger M77 for over 30 years, still just as accurate as the day my dad gave it to me. And. Covers 3 shots with a nickel at 100yds all day... With FACTORY loads. It's an MOA/Sub MOA capable gun all day long ESPECIALLY with handloads.... and it's decades old. No sense in dickin around and spending a ton of cash unless you're trying to shoot 1000-1500yds far as I'm concerned
@jfess1911

@@mrdark9916 I've known people with 30-06's that were not accurate with most factory loads and it cost quite a lot in ammo or load development to find something it liked. I don't know if that is relatively uncommon, though. That's why I asked folks at Hornady, since they have a lot of in-house experience and have handled a lot of calls from customers. If you have watched a lot of Dave Emery videos, he once mentioned "finding the formula" of at least .100" of tight freebore (roughly 5 thousanths of an inch clearance) to get consistent accuracy. That makes me wonder how much difference it makes, on average, versus old-style chambers without freebore. Not long ago the fellow on the Backfire channel was talking about how much he had spent on ammo trying to get his new 300 Win Mag to shoot well. It was in the hundreds of dollars. I wonder how common that is?

I'm surprised that nothing was mentioned about Hornady's Light Magnum loading in 30-06 with 180 gr Interlock bullet. If I remember correctly it boosted the velocity by 200 fps and came close to 7mm mag. performance. I found it to be an excellent elk load.

You guys should take the .30-06 & build a cartridge that doesn't have all the compromises the 06 has. Do away with the case taper, give it a 30° shoulder & a long neck to support these long, high BC bullets you're building. Aim it at the 208-212gr class of .30 projectiles. Call it a .30 ARC or something sporty. Basically, a baby PRC for hunters & rifle builders/ buyers that want to maintain 5 rounds in the stock, don't want to buy a magnum action. .300 Win Mag performance without the belt & magnum action weight.
