Grand Adventure

Күн бұрын

Those who have followed our channel Grand Adventure for a while already know that we'd much rather boondock than camp in a campground or RV park. But we're often asked by folks who may be new to boondocking, about whether or not we're concerned for our security camping alone out in the wilds. We're here to explain why we're not concerned at all, and with only a very few precautions we've never had our security threatened, or had any of our gear walk away on its own.
Be sure to share your own thoughts on your own boondocking security, and the precautions that you take, in the comments section below this video!
Filmed: June 8, 2019 in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southwestern Utah.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a KZfaq channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on KZfaq, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

It’s weird when I’d tent camp I was never scared of buglers or theft just bears but when I was in a trailer I was scared of buglers and thieves! By the way I think this is the most you talked in your videos which I throughly enjoy! Please talk, discuss, narrate or just give us a little more of your personal lives while your adventuring. 🙏👍 And, remember life is adventure! Hehe ✌🏼

My 90 year old Grandma had her CCW Permit and always carried an S&W 500 Revolver. I thought that was absolute insanity so I asked her one day, "Granny, what is it that you are afraid of that you carry such a behemoth of a weapon?" Her reply? "Not a GAWDAM THING!" LOL! 🤣

Thank you. Lots of good information. I have been camping and boondocking for quite a few years. I am now 70 years old and still go boondocking totally alone. Being single with two small dogs I have never really been frightened or worried in the places I camp. I don't like campgrounds with lots of people anyway. Since I do travel and Boondock alone, I always do put out two chairs and leave a couple pair of boots sitting outside the door if I go for a hike or walk away from the camper. I wear a size 12 and I bought a size 18 at a thrift store. At least that makes it look like a hell of a big dude is camping there.

The large boots outside the door is a good idea! I’ve not heard that one before. Another idea I liked was an extra large dog bowl & dog chain left outside. Make a possible intruder think twice before bothering you!

I have boondocked as much as I spent time in RV parks. I have had scary neighbors at RV parks and once at a small boondock location. A older tattooed toothless tent camper with no transportation started talking about how he thought the world was about to end and guys like me disappear on camping trips. I tried to cheer him up and see the more positive side of things, but I left that camp site an hour later. Perhaps he was just acting mentally unstable to have the camp to himself but I did not want to test the hypothesis.

There are fringe elements of our society everywhere, Linus, as you have pointed out. Yeah, we probably would've left too, but that's the beauty of RV living.

Situational awareness is key to personal safety. Demographics and culture are rapidly changing in America. When I grew up we left windows open, bicycles unlocked and didn’t think twice about leaving things out when camping … but since Fundamental Change in America … defunding police, no borders, early release, and DA’s who won’t prosecute … things have really changed. I don’t “worry” when out camping but I sure do maintain a good awareness and sense of my surroundings, and I would advise other to do the same. Having a firearm and being competent in it use goes without saying. PEACE🇺🇸👍

There was a young girl taken out of a tent near three forks Mt. a local nut job saw the family and came by at night to the tent where the kids were sleeping and cut the back of the tent, Taking the little girl. She was never seen alive again. Don't live in fear but make security a part of your life. Don't be naive.

Can't dispute that last statement one bit. But the tent/camping part of that story is somewhat irrelevant as it could just as easily (and as infrequently) happen from a sticks and bricks home - witness the Elizabeth Smart case as exhibit A.

When we were younger and our daughter was a child we camped in a tent with a screen house for our kitchen, table, coolers, lawn chairs unless we had a fire. No one bothered anything and we didn’t bother anyone else’s stuff. I was a Girl Scout volunteer for 23 years. I took kids and various and sundry moms camping all around the country. My husband was in the Navy so I used to say home is where I hang my drapes. I should have said… Home is where I pitch my tent…. Anyway in all that time and in all those places it was in my own backyard that the scariest thing happened. A man tried climbing over my fence during an overnight practice camp and my little dog jumped up, but him on the shoulder, and knocked him down. I don’t think he was interested in the kids. I think he was taking a shortcut. Regardless, I didn’t want him there and the dog didn’t either.

Though not inexpensive still the best, most advanced security system is a dog(s). We have had two incidents boondocking. Not to ring any alarm bells, but it can and does happen. In both instances a few barks from our 90 pound white lab was enough to convince the perps to move along empty handed. Safe travels to all.

Leaving your comfort zone is one of the attractions of boondocking. Having said that I know enough about being in the wilderness that things can turn bad quickly and without the security of 911 you need to be prepared. Medical help mechanical help etc.

Absolutely, Aaron. Boondocking is all about obtaining and maintaining resources. In addition to water, food, electricity, etc. that includes the ability to summon assistance if needed.

I park it at home and that may be my riskiest location and not while camping ⛺️ thanks for sharing and safe travels 👍😎🚌😊 always enjoy and appreciate your videos 😊

We boondock 95% of the time - and have never had any incidents. This is during 20+ years of camping. We've had to make a couple 'emergency RV park stays' and you're right - there's more to be uh-scared of in those places. Just sayin'.

Exactly what my dad used to say many years ago when we were tent campers. He wouldn't go to any of the "local" campgrounds that were popular, claiming that they were "too close to the hoodlum element." We always traveled farther afield to the national parks and never once had a problem at any of them. Thumbs up and subscribed as part of my homework preparatory to getting a rig of my own. ;-)

I hope it never happens to you but sooner or later...... I use to love to go motor over to a private island on the weekends. The winter was my favorite because no ones around, just animals. I put out remote motion detectors to wake me up so I can watch the critters. One night 2am the two legged kind showed. It’s amazing when you have one of the most powerful flashlights made can cause someone to think again and retreat when you have temporary removed their primary sense.

I agree that unfounded paranoia doesn't make sense, and will actually detract from the nature experience. That said, I also believe there are a few simple measures one can (and should) take to increase personal safety and security. Most involve making your person and your camp relatively unappealing to thieves and predators. Some involve life safety and the ability to communicate in case of emergency. Out in the boonies, nobody is coming to your rescue anytime soon.

This was made four years ago. And things have changed. We never thought much about crime in our RV. Then we started hearing from other campers here and there that crime is getting really bad even in RV parks. Not so much state or national parks. Boon docking is a different story now days. You have to keep you eye open. Many reports of people having problems with theft. If you're not a gun person there is aways bear spray or other pepper hand guns that are really good for protection and non lethal. It's not the many times when nothing happens. It's all about that one time when something bad happens.
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 8 ай бұрын
And that's true anywhere, Jim, whether boondocking or in your own home. Still, we're seldom concerned while boondocking, more so in an RV park -- even after our boondocking neighbors were murdered in Texas a few years back. Bad things can happen anywhere.

I know what you mean about feeling less secure when surrounded by other campers at campgrounds. Anyone can pass through and just grab anything from anyone. No one knows what's going on at the populated campgrounds. Maybe even some of the staff have a crime strategy / scheme set up. God Bless, ENJOY!

Just on the news couple of weeks ago, a couple was attacked in their camper. The woman ran and got away but the young man was killed in the trailer for no apparent reason. Horrible. They were still searching for the murderer last I heard, no update. Making certain to lock door is always good.

Have been Boondocking from Newfoundland to Baja Mexico for 9 years ( on the road for 6 mo. a year). Like you, never had a problem. For security we have a “Beware Of Dog” sticker on the door ( we have a cat). Often we are so far off the grid that locking the door to the RV would seem absurd, so we don’t bother. Hope folks watch your video and read the comments. Thanks for your message.

I feel most people think the crazy person is in the RV. If I were a thief the last thing I’d want to do is walk up to an RV that you can’t tell whether it is occupied or not and have no clue who might come outside for you. I agree, RV parks are more of a risk, especially since people can watch your habits and they see when you pack up and leave for the day.

I think in the past I’ve noted about your boondocking and security but could not agree more with what you are saying and it also demonstrates hows safe the US really is , and I feel the same less people more secure , I’m not of the stats but here in the uk when towing or on a site security or even stopping at service stations can be a security issue which is so sad as always great film thanks G&Z

Wow, even stopping for gas? Over here I typically don't even look over my shoulder while pumping gas unless I'm in a really horrible neighborhood. What in the world is their technique over there for pulling something off at a gas station?

Great video, thanks. I think the only time boondocking security may become a little iffy is when there is a major event such as a grid down, or a large-scale natural disaster. Then unprepared people will quickly become desperate and may begin to roam looking for easy pickings. Other than that, it seems like a little common sense, a general awareness of your surroundings, and a little forethought in regards to how you would handle a particular situation (‘’How would I manage a ______situation?’’) would be all that’s needed to insure your general well-being.
