My oldest son turns 18 today. I stumbled on this channel/video last night. We love camping and the outdoors, and he’s got an XJ Cherokee he’s in love with and he has big dreams and high hopes of using his Jeep to take him to cool places. I’m sending this video to him as an eye opening reminder of just how amazing, awe inspiring and spectacular this great big country is, and how much there is for him to get out there and see and do as a young adult! 😎

So very helpful! I'd been an avid backpacker for 30 years but age and arthritis put the brakes on it. I missed the peace and beauty of being out in nature away from others, so when I learned that one could actually camp in such places as you've shown us. I'd found various maps of public land but they were a bit difficult to understand and use, especially the kind that zoom you right into outer space the minute you try to move the cursor around in them. But by you naming the maps, explaining what we were looking at, and what exactly you were looking for with each of them, you made the process clear enough to give us hope. We are about to go on our first real boondocking adventure with confidence. I can hardly wait to get back into the wilderness again after 15 years! Thank you so very much!

One of your better and more informative videos for content fitting the times we're in. You always do a good video, but you made a good point near the end that caught the attention of an old-time dispersed camping boondocker like me. That is that doing it this way, which is pretty much what I've been doing these past two years, is harder and takes time. Everybody nowadays doesn't have time for that, they want it right now on an app on their phones. I've got an old class C on a Ford F350 chassis, 29 foot, and tow my Jeep. I've reworked the suspension, and gave her a minor lift so she can get down roads most would never try in a "C.". If in question, I fire up my drone to check ahead before turning down a blind road or trail. Chuckle, I've made that mistake, once. Ever since Bob did his Nomad video, and there's another out there too, it's been getting crowded on public lands, everyone wants to be a nomad, and in some cases areas I used to camp frequently have been closed. Too many people disobeying the rules, leaving their trash and dumping their tanks. The BLM and FS don't have the budget to deal with this and just shut it down for everyone. I'm wintering this year in South Louisiana near Lafayette in a cheap RV park for $300 a month right down the road from my boys and grandson. Y'all be safe out there, okay.

I recognized all your shots of previous Boondocking in earlier videos. Couldn’t help think “would the new trailer make it there or would it fit in there?” And speaking of new trailer..... Hey, it looks good on you! 😉 I remember studying your first “How to find a Boondocking site”. I think I studied that one and used what I learned when we went to Sedona. Even though I had downloaded PDF of MOV maps and screen shots of Google maps, I still went and purchased the US Forest MOV map. Call me “old school”. This video was much more clearer to me. Even though my actual hands-on experience probably helped me understand it better, I think you have just gotten better as a teacher. The one thing I don’t have is that USCG map on my phone. I think I tried before, but maybe I need to have another go at it. Thank you Professor Guido! 🍎 Ram

You're most welcome Ram, and we're pleased to hear that this updated edition was easier to understand. As for getting our rig into spots, I suspect that in most cases things won't be much different. Because of the hitch placement, our overall length hitched up is only two feet longer. Combine that with better ground clearance and better maneuverability of a fifth wheel, and I think that we'll be good to go. Thanks for the compliment on the new rig, too! We just completed our full-time move out of the house last night, so we're very excited right now about the prospects ahead.

An absolutely amazing video. Some of the best tips I've ever seen when it comes to finding a boondocking spot!!!!! I don't think people have to worry about this info leading to packed spots everywhere because the country is so huge and the more people spread out the better. Also, while not super complicated, this involves a bit more effort than just going to the established websites or googling "best free campsites" so that will be a natural barrier, as well as all those people in Class A's and Class C's that require full hookups or well established gravel/paved/level roads. So many people still live in an RV park all year round or stealth camp in cities/wal-mart lots/etc. and never go out to adventure anyway

We couldn't agree with you more, SS! Thank you very much. The couple of commenters who have had a knee-jerk reaction haven't really stopped to think the actual effect of more people doing their own homework.

Berms may indicate a well graded road, but they also keep you on the road. It can pay to spend a few days at an RV park, to scout the areas in person before you take the RV in
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, Janet! I know that's the strategy that you employ, and if I were driving your Class A instead of towing a trailer with high ground clearance I might well do the same.

We love boondocking and these are some great tips. Google Maps is awesome for zooming in to see what a location really looks like and if an RV was in the photo it makes it that much easier to know we can get our camper into that spot. Great video!

Thank you immensely for sharing your knowledge on seeking out dispersed camping spots. The information you presented in this video helps a lot of us relieve the anxiety of figuring out where we'll spend the night on the road, especially for those of us that want to avoid reservations and a firm schedule. In this video, you've elevated boondocking to a science! Confirmed some things I've learned and taught me some new things. And how did we ever manage without Google Maps!? This one video could not be any more timely for the plans I'm hatching for next summer. And it's especially timely for helping those of us that want to avoid crowds (dare I say social distance!? masks optional!?) for whatever reasons. Happy Holidays and Stay Well!

It’s footage and destinations like these that Larry used to convince me to go full time. It’s about time you gave up your boondocking secrets. We hope to be doing this soon. The RV boom is already causing issues. I’m hoping that when these get back to some normalcy, some people will vacation and weekend other ways. Great tips- of course. I have never seen that map/website before. Wow. The windows in your new rig look bigger than ours? ❤️ Excellent tutorial. 👍 Alice
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
🤣 (at giving up my secrets) Thanks Alice! I'm fairly confident that we're seeing a temporary spike. The RV industry has ebbed and flowed for decades, this is just a unique cause this time. And our windows are very similar, with few exceptions the Durango line and the Grand Design Reflection line are nearly identical. Your GD Solitude is more on par with KZ's Durango Gold line.
