I'm going to stop watching haul videos, favorite monthly product videos, and beauty product video reviews on KZfaq. I just watch and think that I need/want this or that and waste my time and money. I never feel satisfied.

I let go of 75% of my video game collection. Recently, I went through my entire collection and realized that I hadn't played or didn't have any desire to play certain games. Sold off the others and stashed the extra cash away in my savings account.

Believe me, it was not an easy decision. Took me a couple of months of going back and forth before I actually pulled the trigger. One major factor was that I owned multiple copies of certain games both digitally and physically. I'm still a passionate gamer, I just had to tone down the level of impulse purchases that were fueled by nostalgia.

T R A V I E 6 4 I know the feeling, I've bought some PSX games I've still not played and even my "must have" Megadrive has been used only a couple of times.. When I occasionally think "well this game X is something I would like to play through again" despite having piles and piles of never before played ones, I know I'm in trouble. That's why I started to diminish my movie collection as these life years aren't enough for infinite piles of media to go through :p

Re: the comment Ryan made about the parameters around when to retire based on the IRS mortality tables. While part of that is true, people work till 65 a lot of the time so they can still have health care till Medicare kicks in. Private coverage costs prior to Medicare age with little to no income can deplete any nest egg. I love you guys so much and I have been able to let go of so many things causing stress. In fact, one of my clients told me about you originally and I have told many more about you. But when you talk about financial milestones and things people should be talking to a licensed advisor about, I just wish a little disclaimer was included that alludes to the importance of confiding in a licensed advisor.

I think one of the hardest things I’ve had to let go of was the temptation to justify my spending on “experiences”. With the newest trend being to “travel/experience instead of purchase” , I was caught up once again in the madness of trying to keep up with the minimalist Joneses. I wasn’t doing it because I loved it, but because that’s what true minimalists do. 😂🙄🤦‍♀️ When, actually, this spending was keeping me in the rat race.

A note for Jaqueline - there's nothing wrong with being a moderate minimalist, giving yourself permission to do the odd bit of shopping may well be a foundational step to releasing that compulsive streak. It works for me - it broke the angst, so it took it out of hyperfocus in my mind so I have way less of a problem now. *note LESS ;)

Here in the UK fruit and veg on today’s date is often sold at a discount. We know this as a ‘woops’. On my minimalist journey, I have stopped purchasing these special offers. I see clearly now that to add value to my life and health, I should be investing in the freshest fruit and vegetables in the store and not saving pennies buying green grocery that is already partially decayed. Thanks, you have really helped me to understand what ‘adding value’ to my life means to me in many areas of my life. Cheers Jane x

I am happy with my self, the inward work of minimizing. Learning from others as they share their knowledge and progress. I have learned qnd mastered self control over things. I see clearly the strong wheel of influence ,marketing and consumerism. By itself for needs and comfort in basic terms is good. But the satanic greed twisted it. People are easily influenced and it is in excess we loose the goal. I can window shop without purchase, I can enjoy products without wanting it. My best friend is the watchman at the door.

i never stop wanting to make money. i educated myself and in the last 25 years i have worked hard. i have found that its easier to live minimally when you make a good living. my activities are still those of my youth, i like hiking and fishing and hunting and cooking and wood working. my life is full of activities not stuff. yes i have three well used fishing poles that I've owned for many years, my late fathers fishing pole, and my late brothers fishing pole and my own. i may have more bait than is necessary. DIY and minimalism and homesteading have much in common. if you really want something, then you make it. When you homestead you never make or have what you do not need. i love the modern world, i own a tv that i never use unless its football season. my life is mine, but now at the age of 48 i will finally marry later this year. i fear that my new wife will want to fill the empty space of my home with table and chairs and shelves that we don't need and were not made by me personally. she has made comments that worry me like "you're house is beautiful but it looks so lonely" hmmm.

Thats great you talk about brands and "helping the enviroment". It's really, really important. The best thing for the enviroment you can do (putting aside consuming less in general) is going Zero Waste. Stop using plastic bags, straws, cups, toothbrushes etc. Plastic is major problem right now. Buying less stuff is great, but when you buy food and things you NEED in plastic containers or bags it does more harm to our planet. For me thinking about enviroment is huge part of my minimalism journey. Greetings from Poland ;)

I let go of toxic people, even tho they were family. I feel so much better now. The problem with that is that you are also letting go of the people that associate with them. For example, I had to let go of my critical, berating sister. So that means I no longer see her children or grandchildren. I just have to stay away from family events where she will be.

I have a really old computer (about 10 yrs old - in techno terms, it's a dinosaur) it's big, it's bulky and it's slow. I really considered replacing it and after doing the research the tower I found cost about $800. Which is pretty reasonable for technology and replacing a 10 yr old computer is quite common in our world. So the social signals all pointed to yes!But then it occurred to me - am I willing to pay $800 to solve this "problem"? Like, if someone came up to me and said, "hey I will make it to where your computer is so much quicker if you give me $800" would I say yes? And the answer is...no. BUT I was totally ready to hand over that $800 to a store?! People often flippantly say, "I would give a million dollars if *blank*" but if you apply that question in a serious way...for me it saved $800. It also made me acknowledge that I honestly only use this desktop about once a week, generally doing most of my desk work during down time at my office. I was willing to pay more than many make in a week to be less inconvenienced for a few hours. Somehow stopping and asking myself that seemingly obvious question really put it in perspective.

You scared me I thought it was Tuesday for a minute there. Consumerism has been the hardest part for me too. I have this never ending urge to fill a void in my life and it's so easy to think of something new to buy. I go through a cycle of paying off my Credit Card, then racking up a couple a grand in a few weeks, and then paying it off again. I have other debts to worry about and I end up depressed after the initial excitement wears off. Some days I am so close to killing myself (and I am not exaggerating) that I start to think if I buy something it will at least boost my mood for a couple of days/weeks and give me an escape from my thoughts and keep me alive. It's the scariest form of retail therapy you could imagine.

Scared Folks dude I’m sending you a hug....although I haven’t had thoughts of ending it all, I’ve been through really low lows and found solace and temporary happiness in buying stuff. There’s no point masking problems..I think we need to invest our money in healing wounds that keep opening up. A hard process but that void needs to be filled with self help and therapy instead of materials. 🙏🏼

Those fast fashion companies that cut up their own product shoot themselves in the foot. If their clothes are so cheap or badly made that the company would rather destroy the product than oh... Idk SHIP IT BACK ??? to the company and recycle the textiles into different styles if they don't want to donate or give them away, then it proves that the finished product is worth so little that the company would rather take the loss for the sake of artificial scarcity than reinvest in the materials.

I used to have a set of shelves in my garage dedicated to stuff I was selling on Craigslist, garage sales or the Beg/Barter sites on FB. TBH things would sometimes sit for months but then I would put them out (for the third time) in a garage sale and it would go. At the time I was a stay at home mom and I had the time/space to monitor the posts, do garage sales etc. And I did make significant side money doing it and met some cool people but I would say it was almost a PT job. One easy tip for clothes is try the resale shops. Box it up, drop it off, come back in a few hours to collect. But it's pretty low on the dollar. Same for used books/games. Courtney Carver donated anything valued under less than $50 when decluttering. I think that is probably the better rule of thumb unless again you have the time/space.

my biggest problem with letting go of some stuff that I don't need anymore is that I just cannot be bothered to find a new owner to every single item. I already have a bag of things prepared to give them away but I don't want to just throw all the stuff in the garbage. at the same time, the last thing I wanna do is waste my time searching for options how to get rid of the stuff and who could use it. this is the biggest pain. sometimes I just trow something away and then try very hard to numb the feeling of guilt coming from the fact that I just threw away something that somebody else could still use. you have it much easier in the US. we do not have any charity shops where we could bring stuff that we don't want anymore. we also don't have any garage sales. nothing.. so everything just goes to the trash bin.

Any tips on how to let go of a toxic person, that has the apartment across the hall and shares the yard space, would be appreciated. Moving isn't an option.

azzzonline how sad ... I would just ignore them as though they are a barking dog Sometimes there are misunderstandings. Maybe buying them some yummy baked goodies with a nice note saying I just wanted to know my neighbors better might be a way that they might soften up . Food does miracles

Funny that Fight Club comment - just yesterday I watched the movie for the Nth time (one of my favorites) - this was because I was inspired by The Minimalists blog where you wrote about those classic quotes from Tyler "the minimalist" Durden.

Hey guys, I don't understand why you two promote throwing things into the landfill? For example, you guys would say donate. thrift store it goes.. etc but most of the items we donate goes straight to the landfill. Why don't you guys practice trading items to those who would need it instead of the landfill? Or at least promote it, talk about it, the risk and consequence. So currently I have been practicing minimalism (on-and-off for about 6yrs). I moved here and there to a different country for school. But I realized it doesn't really help me improve to select an item whether it is clothes or a piece of furniture. When I make a decision I make sure that I would use it until the end of time and if I do not want it anymore after good use I make sure I have taken good care of the clothes that someone else would want it. I make sure it is permanent and its purpose is put to good use now. It helps me understand what we choose to have in our life is permanent and it does come with consequences I practice low waste but I am not perfect and so is everyone else. But it does mean that we still use toxic chemicals to make a shirt or maybe a piece of a couch.

Ann Nazief Everything must be in moderation. These podcasts give me value and joy but with a family of 5 I have to break them up. You could schedule it for yourself which may help. If it gives you joy and value I would keep it but decide a time for it which fits best for you.

About working out. If you do exercise just for the long term benefits of that then... There's whole bunch of things wrong with that attitude. First- it's really hard to motivate yourself to stick to the routine. It's better to just enjoy it, it's pointless to do 45 of brain numbing elliptical if you don't like it, just walk a dog or go for a swim or go play football (for Americans: soccer) or whatever you actually enjoy. Beside that afaik (I'm familiar with one study concerning cycling) there are basically no health benefits of doing more than 2 hours of cardio a week in total of 1 to 2 training sessions (one book even stated that all you need to do for the health reasons is 8 minutes a week). This is this thing that I call American positivism- the more books you read the smarter you get, the more you run the healthier you get, the more you have the happier you get etc., while for all of those things there's a saturation point beyond which there are absolutely no benefits. So if you're just concerned about your health- get rid of your fitness routine. Just incorporate healthy amount of work in your weekly routine, idk, maybe just cycle to buy groceries instead of driving, and play grass hockey once a week and that's it.
